YouTube conversation (published Sept 15, 2020) featuring Mark Evans DM and Beacon where Mark explains why he installed and maintains golf-course-quality grass at his home. He frames the lawn as a childhood dream (started imagining it at age 10), a personal investment (installed around age 38 and maintained for ~4 years as of the recording), and an intentional expense (maintenance can cost “a couple, two, three grand a month”). The piece emphasizes personal satisfaction over external approval and the symbolic value of investing in one’s happiness.

Gosh, what is this? Is this, is this golf, Golf course grass?
My man, this is the best grass in the world right here.
Is this, is this really what I think it is?
Yes, sir.
Why do you have golf course grass? Or like, I mean, it's the best damn grass, but like, how?
Why? Yeah, well, number one, Beacon. You know, for me, when I was a 10 year old kid, small town, Ohio, mowing lawns. I've always been a freak about lawns. Beautiful grass, edge lines. I don't care if you have a lot of money or a little bit of money, you can always have a nice lawn, mowing it, trimming it, edging it and making it look good. So for me, this means way more than just grass. I know. First of all, it's not cheap to take care of. This could cost a couple, two, three grand a month every single month to make sure it doesn't die and, you know, get fungus and all this stuff. But it's my personal house and I love it and I like it. It makes me smile when I pull up. And this is the thing about life, when you start generating money and all that is, it gives you options. I don't care if you like it or not. I don't care if you think it's stupid or not. It doesn't affect me. It's what I want. And I think so many people are out there worrying about what other people think or what other. I mean, there's not one person in this area that has golf course grass. People think we're crazy, probably. People stop and take pictures, they think it's fake grass, they'll roll on it, see what it feels like and all that. So to me, what it really came down to is at 10 years old, this was a vision I had. I didn't know what it looked like, I didn't know when I'd get it. And now at 42 years old, I've had this for about four years. So I got it at 38 years old, my dream grass, golf course grass. Beautiful. I invested a lot of money into the grass I'll never get the value about. When I say invest, I'm investing in myself. It makes me feel good. See, I don't need an ROI on grass, right? My ROI comes when I'm smiling and happy and I don't need to explain it to other people. It's just what I like. I like beautiful lawns. So for me, 10 years old, dreaming about beautiful grass. Who doesn't love the smell of grass when you're mowing it. Who doesn't love the look when it looks perfect? I mean, it looks like. It looks like carpet, right, Beacon? So it looks like carpet out here. And not only that, Beacon, you know, I. I get it mowed twice a week. I want it tight, I want it knitted, I want it clean. I want it to be the best it can be. And I spend a lot of time and energy and money with my guys to make it look this good. But that's what it stands for, man. Like, what do you stand for? What do you want? What are you shooting for? What were the dreams you had when you were a kid? Where are you at today? What I see, Beacon is most people just give up on their dreams. They're like, oh, that's stupid. But that's a waste of money. When's it not a waste of money? When's it change for you? I know it changed for me when I made a decision to make investments in myself and what makes me happy. So enjoy the grass.
