When coworkers derail meetings with endless arguments, redirect them to what your team can actually control. Use phrases like "I only want to talk about what we can control" to shrink the debate and focus on specific, actionable problems instead of broader criticisms.
Chapters
If you have a coworker who loves turning every meeting into an argument, stop letting them decide what the argument is about. So memorize this line: I only want to talk about what we can control. If a coworker says, this rollout is guaranteed to fail, say, I hear you, but right now I only want to talk about what we can control. If they keep pushing, the CEO's whole plan is ridiculous, say, we're not debating the CEO's decision. What specific problem can we control in this rollout? If they jump to something irrelevant like AI is ruining the world, bring them back again. If they raise a specific actionable concern, sure, discuss it, but don't confuse arguing with problem solving. Shrink the conversation to something somebody in the room can actually change. That's how you stop a pointless argument without having to win it.
