In this segment, Mark Murphy outlines three essential traits for leaders of remote employees: being a company evangelist, being highly encouraging, and being approachable. He emphasizes the role of company evangelists—leaders who passionately champion the brand, culture, and values—to counteract the rapid spread of negative information online, which can drown out positive, softer messages. By transmitting culture and values with extra energy, these leaders help maintain a cohesive organizational identity across distances ranging from a few miles to thousands.

The best leaders of remote employees are the company evangelists and people who are very encouraging and approachable. These are 3 big characteristics that really stand out for leaders of remote employees. So company evangelists, why do we need that? People who are very rah-rah the company brand. People who are bought into who we are and what we're about and where we're going and all of that. Why is that important? It's important because negative information tends to travel further and faster in cyberspace than does positive information. Which means your brand message, your culture, your values are going to have a more difficult time getting through cyberspace. It's positive information, it's soft, it's fuzzy. It just doesn't travel as well as kind of negative gossipy stories about who did what to whom. Because of that, you need people who are actually going to be extra positive, extra pro the values, extra pro the culture, extra pro the brand. You're going to need people who are able to transmit that with that extra bit of energy because that's what it's going to take to transmit your culture, your values, your brand, etc., across what might be 10 miles, what might be thousands of miles.
