115: Creating mini habits to achieve resolutions

Mart Tweedy explains how mini-habits stick where big resolutions fail. Start with one push-up or one positive thought instead of overhauling your life. He walks through reframing goals, visualizing wins, and using a "win jar" to track daily progress.

Hello everyone and welcome back to Canny Crystals, the podcast. As you know by now, I am Mart Tweedyedy, I am your host, and I really hope that you've had an amazing Christmas with loved ones or friends or even just on your own. I spent Christmas Day at my mom's house this year. I had Christmas dinner, you know, with some of the family, and then I went on to me cousin's farm on the afternoon just to spend some time with their kids, really. And don't get us wrong, I ate far too much, as expected, and I even had 2 desserts like Little Miss Piggy. So as soon as I came home on Boxing Day, I just made a plan to myself to do a super healthy food shop, and I even declared to myself, you know, no more junk food. As I mentioned last week, health is wealth. That is going to be the tagline that underpins everything that I do in 2024, and I'm going to start the year right. I am not doing this anymore. I'm sick of feeling like a gigantic whale, like Shamu, someone's going to harpoon us, like I'm there on a beach or something. I just feel absolutely disgusting. So health is wealth is the tagline that's going to underpin everything I do 2024. So as we stand at, you know, the brink basically of this brand new year, I can feel the air, it's electric with possibility. Honestly, I know it's not just me. I've been speaking to a few other spiritual people as well, and everyone is saying like they can feel it. 2024 is going to be our year. I have an amazing feeling inside that, you know, 2024 is going to be an amazing year for everyone. I think I've mentioned this a couple of weeks ago on the podcast as well, but if you look at the numerology, for example, 2 0 2 4 8. 8 is the universal number of abundance because if you draw a number 8 with a pen or a pencil, that line will never end. You'll keep going round and round and round. That number is the number of eternal abundance. So, you know, it's not just me that can feel it, there's other people that can feel it as well. And we are just 3 days away from the new year now, and, you know, we're so many opportunities away from making our dreams come true as well. So as the fireworks are gonna like light up that sky on Sunday night, this is the time of year that we tend to set our resolutions for the next 12 months ahead, and basically what we decide on what we physically want in our lives moving forward. So our small wins of the past year, they're going to connect to the outline of our future of what we're about to manifest. So today it's going to be quite a short episode because, you know, we're We're in that period between Christmas and New Year, and I'm trying to appreciate the rest and the days off as much as I possibly can. But I also want to share with you the magic of setting resolutions that stick and all those mini habits that we create that help us achieve those tiny victories that are going to in turn build that triumphant year that we all want. So first off, let me talk about the power of intention. We all know about the power of intention and how, you know, this will help us to achieve our goals, because every resolution that we set begins with an intention. They're basically the seed from which our manifestations grow. So we need to plant those seeds carefully this year. And instead of saying, you know, I want to lose weight, let's reframe that as, you know, I intend to nourish my body and honor my health. Do you see how I'm reframing that? So do you feel the difference in those statements? Instead of saying I want to lose weight, I intend to nourish my body and honor my health. It's that simple. It's just reframing how we speak. It's about positive action, not about avoidance or loss. Okay, then next part is all about the visualization. So for example, picture this: it's December 31st, 2024, so it's in a year's time. You're sitting in a room, it's filled with all the accomplishments of the past 12 months. So what does that look like to you? Like, are there medals hanging on the wall? Are there certificates? Is there a new business logo on your laptop or phone screen? Are there photos of happy memories surrounding you? Just hold those images in your mind and let's backtrack. Like, how did you get there? What small steps did you take each and every day, each and every week, each and every month? Break it down even further because as we know, Manifesting isn't just about the big leaps, it's about those small consistent wins. So it'll be the daily affirmations, the gratitude for even the smallest progress, the subliminals that we listen to, that 5-minute meditation, that 10 pages of that book that morning. It all mounts up, and that's what helps mount to an achievement of a goal. So celebrate every single step because every single one of those is a stone in the foundation of your success. And speaking of small wins, let me tell you about something that I did this year, which I think I read online about. I can't remember. I don't think it was from any books that I read. I'm sure I read about it online. It was called the win jar, okay? I might even put a photo of this on my story today. Every time that you achieve something, no matter how small, I just want you to write it down on a bit of scrap paper and put it in a blank jar, okay? So just an empty jar. I'm just using an old jam jar. On New Year's Eve next year, I want you to open it up and I want you to have a look at all of the small victories that made up the incredible past 12 months. And you'll be surprised, trust us, because I opened mine up, um, what day are we on now? So this episode is going out on the 29th. I opened mine up 2 days before, on the Wednesday, on the 27th, and I had a look at all the small victories that made up the past 12 months and You know, I was shocked because sometimes when we're asked to look back over the last year of like everything that we've accomplished, we might struggle to do so, either because our minds will go blank or, you know, we'll play down all the amazing things that we've actually achieved because they were just so long ago that you might think that they were insignificant. But trust me when I tell you, none of your wins are insignificant. They are wins. You have won something. You have achieved something. That is significant, no matter how insignificant or how small it seems to you. That will change everything about you. It's like what they always say about time travel films and stuff like that. Like, this is getting really nerdy here, but they always say like, if you went back in time and you changed the most insignificant thing, that will have such a detrimental effect, that will have such a knock-on effect that, you know, everything in the future that when you return would have changed just from that one insignificant moment. So trust me when I tell you, none of your wins are insignificant. So then let's look at the practical magic, okay? So we've got the actions. So this next 12 months, we're not just dreaming, we are doing, okay? For every resolution that you want to make for 2024, I want you to also create an action plan. So what do you need to learn? Who do you need to connect with? What resources do you require? What do you need to avoid to ensure that you stay on track? I want you to create a roadmap for each goal because that's going to really help you to get closer to actually transforming your goal into a daily habit where you'll be, you know, far more likely to stick to and work towards. And in the spirit of taking action, I've created a special 12-month planner that will be available for download as an additional bonus within my Achieving Your Goals workshop on my academy website. I've whacked this in as an additional bonus. I wasn't going to, but I've had so many messages about the one that I printed off for myself and put on my office wall, and it's designed to keep you accountable and to track your progress throughout the year. So if you've already got access to my Achieving Your Goals workshop, log in, click on the bonus section, and you'll see it. It's in there. The That's my little gift to you. And just remember though, as we step into this new year, we need to carry all the lessons of the past with us. We need to reflect on what worked for us and what didn't this last year. And we need to use that knowledge to refine our approach because all of these small little wins will sharp mount up. So why are we making these habits so small when we could aim higher? I hear you scream at me. And what happens if you stop at your small goal? Would it still be useful? Yes, of course it is. That's the simple answer, and it has to do with willpower. So the advantage of willpower is that it can be strengthened. Very disciplined people are those who have strengthened their willpower, but that's only to get them started. The extremely fit people that you see in the gym, for example, they don't have to force themselves to exercise anymore because it's become a habit. So they need that willpower to get there in the first few months, but after that it becomes habit. They don't actually need willpower anymore because exercise exercise has become their brain's first preference. So it's like, I really struggle to get back in the gym. I haven't been in the gym in so, so long. I had the hypnotherapy a couple of weeks ago. I got back on the Peloton and I was like, you know, I'm going to join the gym again. I rejoined the gym and then I just thought to myself, oh my God, it is so daunting just like wanting to get back into the gym and wanting to go. So I was messaging Jude, my life coach. I was messaging Josie, me old PT. Then I saw a few of me other friends training there at the gym, um, that I used to train at my old gym with, you know. So it was that initial willpower, but once I actually got in there and I got on the treadmill and, you know, started lifting weights and things, I was like, oh my God, I love this so much. I totally forgot how good this feels to get in the gym and actually train. I mean, I probably won't be saying this in January when it's absolutely heaving and rammed, but yeah, I absolutely loved it. It was just taking that advantage of that willpower In fact, I actually just sat there with me tiger's eye holding it and me opalite. I have me opalite necklace on, me tiger's eye in me hand, and I was like, come on, you can do this. It's all about willpower. Just give me that willpower. Bless me with the strength and the courage and that determination to just, you know, set foot in that gym. Because once I've done it once, it will become habit. So when you develop a habit, you'll say, you know, brain, we need to exercise. And your brain will reply, you know, I was already on me way to the treadmill. Try and keep up. There are 3 things on the road to habit. So we need to strengthen our willpower, we need to make progress in the present moment, and we need to not exhaust our willpower as well. Because losing any one of those 3 things would be a problem. I mean, who is okay with always having weak self-control? Who wants to train for 3 months in the gym before making any progress in life? Who wants to burn out from willpower exhaustion? Like, nobody, do you know what I mean? What good is strong willpower if you only have it for 2 hours a day? We want our willpower to last that entire day. So endurance training at the gym involves lifting lighter weights with heavier repetitions, so higher reps, and that'll train the muscle to endure. So mini habits like that are working in the same way. We're giving ourselves these low willpower tasks that don't take much energy but with a high frequency. So that's going to enhance the consistency. It takes very little willpower to do one push-up, for example, you know, but starting that is the hardest part. So then tomorrow you might do two, then the day after you might do three, then the day after that you might do four, and your muscle is constantly working. I know this isn't about exercise, but you get what I'm getting at here. This can be used for so many things. I know I'm just using the gym as an example. So over time, that frequent repetition of forcing ourselves to to like perform those achievable tasks, that makes our willpower stronger. It's just practice and consistency. That's all it is. So the biggest question about these mini habits is regarding the meaningfulness of doing just one push-up a day or thinking just one positive thought per day. And one way to answer that is just to try it yourself and just see what happens. But this question still needs to be addressed logically. So how can this practice of doing, you know, seemingly meaningless quantities of work pay off with real results. So there are two ways that it will help you, okay? Number one is that seeing yourself take that action, that's more inspirational, that's more motivating than anything else. So there's a key strategy of achieving your goals here. Once you're fully motivated to do something, you don't need that willpower anymore. Even though we're relying 100% on willpower to do these mini habits, the motivation will then play a role when we choose to do more than that. I usually find myself highly motivated once I start me habits, but it's only occasionally before I take any action. Does that make sense? So number 2 is that, you know, the hope with mini habits is that you'll shoot for 50 words a day writing a new book or whatever. But you'll develop the habit of 2,000 words a day. But that might not happen straight away. Yeah, so using that gym analogy, for example, you might just do like, want to do the, the 1 press-up a day and then move it to 2 and then move it to 3 and then move it to 4. Or you might do 1, 1 day, and then the next day think, well, actually I could do 5 today. And then the next day think, well, actually I could do 10 a day. And you might have these incremental jumps. Okay, but it might not happen straight away. Don't worry about it. If you stick with your mini habit despite only meeting the small requirement, it will form into a habit and it will become easier to do more of that as well. I know, for example, the biggest hurdle for some people is going to be patience. You don't want to be the person, you know, just doing that one push-up a day or writing 50 words a day. You want to catapult yourself into the 4,000 words a day or the 4,000 press-ups a day. And get to your dreams as fast as possible. That's just because we're impatient, bitches. That's all it is. But I have good news for you. If you can write 4,000 words a day, do it. Mini habits shouldn't hold you back. That would be like saying, you know, a spark holds back a fire from starting. Mini habits are sparks with unlimited potential. So normal goals might be 2,000 words of writing per day. But that can become a ceiling as well as a minimum. So you'll feel satisfied at 2,000 words and you'll say, "That's enough." With my 50-word goal, I've written more than 5,000 words in a day. So, you know, it's so important to understand because with the wrong mindset, someone could think that a small goal could hold them back. And at some point, that spark is going to become a flame, and later that flame is going to start a fire. So it's all just about taking those tiny little incremental steps. If you think that a step is too small for you, you're approaching this from the wrong angle completely. That's all I'm saying. Every big project is made up of small steps, just like every organism is made up from microscopic cells. Taking those small steps, that's going to keep you in control over your brain. So small steps are sometimes the only way to move forward if you've got that weak willpower.. So you need to learn to love them, and you'll see those incredible results. And before I wrap this episode up, let's set our intentions together for this next year. So I just want you to grab the nearest crystal to you, whatever you've got. Just hold a crystal if you have one. If you don't, you can still do this, it's absolutely fine. I've got my clear quartz here, I've got my malachite in my other hand, and I've also got my moldavite pendant on as well. I just want you to close your eyes Just bring yourself to the present moment, and I just want you to repeat after me. I am the architect of my life. My thoughts build its foundation, and my actions decorate the rooms. So that I am the architect of my life. My thoughts build its foundation and my actions decorate the rooms. So as we count down to midnight on Sunday, I just want you to promise yourselves to be present in every moment. I want you to celebrate every win. I want you to lift each other up. The new year is a blank book, okay? Our actions are the pen. So I just want you to write yourselves a story that you can't wait to read back on December 31st, 2024. And that's basically all I have to say on the matter. But just before I sign off, I just want to quickly remind you about our workshop on New Year's Day. I want you to secure your spot and make 2024 our most intentional year yet. I'll be going live in the Academy on New Year's Day at 7 PM UK time over at cannycrystalsacademy.co.uk.
