An update from Mary: Remember, YOU HAVE PERMISSION!

Mary Schiller shares how her yearly theme "bold" became a verb driving her mission to help people recognize they have permission to spend time on what matters. She's lost jobs, quit unfulfilling work, and discovered money appears when she follows her interests, now coaching others toward financial freedom and living for a living rather than working for one.

And again, I welcome your thoughts and comments as always. I decided to jump on here today because it's been a really long time since I did a Facebook Live, and I wanted to share a few little updates with you— pardon me— and the cough I'll tell you about in a minute, and just kind of say hello again after a bit of an absence. Just to kind of recap a few things, I was quite ill with the flu back in November and December. I didn't get a flu shot this time and I definitely should have. Unfortunately, what happened was I was in the recovery period from the flu. I was still quite ill but was recovering. And then I got— right before Christmas, about a few days before Christmas, I got hit with another virus. I guess it saw an opportunity and it took advantage of it. So yeah, so that was kind of unfortunate. And then I was scheduled to go on this amazing trip to Japan with my daughter on January 1st. And so I did everything I possibly could to recover from this virus before we left, and I was doing pretty well, went on the trip, and was mostly able to do everything that I wanted to do on the trip, feeling a little bit off-kilter. But then when I got back home from Japan, I was kind of down for the count for a little while, and I also discovered that a sort of chronic health condition that I had was really aggravated by the flu in particular. So that is now starting to take care of itself. So I'm hoping that I'm now on the mend and I just have a few little symptoms left and they're fading out, so I think all is good there. So that's how my year has started. And then in other things, you know, just my cat is being so funny. She loves going into the laundry basket thing. I'm just worried because she has a tendency to stick her head through things that look like holes. So just one second. I want to make sure she's not strangling herself. Hey, yeah, you need to get out. Sure enough, she has stuck her head through the little loop. Hang on. Yeah, you're stuck. All right, I got her out of there. Poor thing. Anyway, so In other developments, I have— hi Tiffany, thank you, I appreciate it. I have really been inspired this year. As you may recall, I told you that my word for the year is bold and I've really been excited by what that word means. My daughter was saying, "Bold is a verb, Mom. It's not just an adjective." I really liked that idea of bold being a verb. I've really noticed that my interests and my inspiration recently have really gone in this direction of trying to help people as best I can to really spend their time doing what they want to do. You know, I have this book called You Have Permission, and it's all about the fact that we are actually free to do what we want to do. But what I've noticed is that a lot of people don't see that they have this freedom in every aspect of life. I know for myself, it was very hard for me to recognize the fact that I was free to actually spend my time doing what I wanted to do, and that if I did that, uh, I would be able to earn an income. That looked completely impossible to me. It looked for so long like I needed to have a job and I need to have the "security" of all that and I can only say that when I made the decision to spend my time doing only what I wanted to do— no Starbucks, don't do that again— and stop doing things that I didn't want to do, it was amazing how easy it was to create something that would earn an income for me. And I know that this, if you're not in that situation, it may seem very hard to relate to, but this is something that I'm really inspired to help people with this year, is to, to really show you how simple it can be to follow what's in your heart and the, the parts of life that seem so dependent on a paycheck or whatever, they tend to start taking care of themselves. It's really been a pretty fascinating journey for me. Hi Tiffany. Work with Nicola Morritt, A Little Piece of Mind course, don't know whether you've heard. Yes, I have heard of Nicola. I've spoken to her before and yeah, I think she's really interesting. And so, you know, I really feel like there's a very wide avenue here for a whole new discussion around what we do for a living and how we do it and how we earn money and what money means to us. I feel like that whole area has really not been explored in the way that I'm talking about. You know, so much, even in some of you may know me as a quote unquote 3 principles based coach, that's how I started as a transformational coach. And even in that sphere, I feel like there isn't much discussion about money and finances and and allowing ourselves this freedom to follow what we're interested in and to do what we want to do. I feel like that discussion really needs to be brought to the forefront. And to that end, I've already written some books related to money, like Let's Make Money, Honey, and, and a couple of others. And I feel like this topic is so important to people because it looks so tangible and so real, and I can relate to that myself. For so long. I mean, when I say— I've talked about this before, but I remember so clearly how big a stressor money seemed to be for me. It was just like a preoccupation. I always felt like I was lacking and I didn't know how to earn more, and I was always doing things that I didn't really want to do in order to earn money. And then almost 3 years ago now when I lost my job, I just said, "You know what? I don't care what happens to me. I don't want to spend my time, whatever time I have left here, doing things that aren't interesting to me." It just seemed like a waste of life to be spending my time doing something that I wasn't inspired by and And yeah, I just wasn't interested in that anymore. And what has been so amazing to me in these last 3 years is that it has not been difficult at all to follow what I'm interested in and to have money show up at the same time. It's been kind of miraculous and something that I don't think I would have believed unless I had actually tried it myself. And just really took that leap and just went for it. And so to kind of summarize what I've been saying, I really have a very strong calling within me now. I have had this for a while, but it's gotten even stronger to demystify this whole aspect of life. Hi Shirley! To demystify this whole thing about money and how, what it is and how it shows up and, and to really show people that they have complete freedom to spend their time doing what they want to do without having to be so preoccupied by that whole money piece and instead seeing that as part of the beautiful creative process of what it means to be human. Hi Tiffany, only here once, we have to make the most of it and grab it with both hands, enjoy as best we can. I agree, I totally agree. And you know, for so many of us and myself included, you know, I used to see myself with all these limitations, not just related to money but all kinds of other things. And as I have explored more about the truth behind life and the truth behind our experience, I've seen that any notion of limitation is simply false. It cannot be true. It just can't be true. Pardon me. And so, so that's also very much in the forefront of my mind is, is somehow demonstrating that we are limitless. Hi Shirley. And that we are free. We are totally free even if it looks like we have constraints. It only looks that way. And yeah, I've just been so fortunate in a way I feel to have, to have made the decision to go in a direction that seemed at the time to be rather stupid, frankly. When I think back on it now, I can laugh about it. It wasn't funny at the time. But when I think about what things looked like to me at that moment of, you know, losing my job. My husband wasn't working. Our savings was down to almost nothing because we had had some major expenses leading up to that point, and I had no prospects. I had nothing that looked at all solid, and just deciding, you know what, I'm going to just do what I want now. I'm going to live the way I want to live and that's it. One really big piece of this that has become clear to me is that— and this is something that I have been teaching people over the last year and it's going to become another focus of what I do going forward— is that, you know, people are really attracted to other people who are living the way they want to live. And if you do want to have your own business, if you want to work for yourself, if you want to really experience the creativity of that, it really needs to start with you living the way that you want to and not waiting. As Tiffany was saying, you know, we don't have to wait for anything. We can live right now the way that we want to live. And if you come away from this video with just one message, I'm hoping it will be that, that no matter what constraints it looks like you have, you actually have the freedom and the creative abilities to live the way you want to live starting right now. So if there are things that you don't like anymore, you're free to drop them. If there are things that you would really love to do, you're free to go do them. There is nothing stopping you. Nothing, not even thoughts. They can't stop you either because they don't even exist. They are not tangible. So I think I will sum this up by saying that I've really appreciated— oh, thanks, Tiffany. It always seems like— oh, hang on, I can't see your whole comment there. Oh, thanks, Tiffany. Yeah, you know, it's interesting. People often say that I seem happy in my videos. It's because I am. And the good news is that everybody is. Our natural state is one of joy and relaxation and composure and calm and all those beautiful things. That's our natural state. So, you know, if I have times when I'm not experiencing that outwardly, it's still there. I'm still experiencing that all the time, as we all are. Even when it isn't obvious to us. And that's been a lovely discovery as well. So, so I think, you know, what I would love to leave you with in this video is that I have really appreciated your support of me and your continual following of what's new with me. I am almost over this period of illness, I'm happy to say. And going forward, it's my hope that I can inspire you to live more, I guess I would say. You know, I have this phrase that I, I now live for a living instead of work for a living. Oh, I would just want to inspire you to live more, to give yourself permission to do the things that you're called to do, that you're inspired to do, that you just want to do. You know, I would love to hear from you in the comments. You know, what is something that you would just love to do? What's something that you would love to stop doing? Because that's important too. I don't think we give ourselves the space to recognize the truth of that, that we really are free to do things the way that we want to do them and to, to simply wake up tomorrow and listen to what is calling to us. You know, just one last thing I'll say about that is that one of the most amazing parts for me about having my own business and working for myself, being my own boss, is that I can wake up every day and do whatever I want. I love that. I love the freedom of that and the creativity involved in that and the fun involved in that. I never know what any day is going to look like and it's such an exciting way to live. It's just a thrill. I really have a hard time putting into words what that's like. So that's what I want for you if that's kind of missing, if you feel like there's something missing in that area. That's something that I'm hoping to help you with going forward. So thanks for watching this video wherever you happen to be viewing it, and I would really appreciate hearing from you in the comments. So please let me know if this talk was at all helpful to you today. I'm going to be doing some more live talks here on Facebook, on YouTube, and on Crowdcast. So you can follow me on Crowdcast as well, and you'll be notified if you're on my email list. You'll be notified when I'm giving some longer, like hour-long along plus a live talk. Fingers crossed I'm getting better and having fun doing that. You know, it's really fun to learn a new skill like that, especially one that is so useful to me here living in Paris now. So I'm enjoying all of the ups and downs of that experience as well. It's sure a lot of fun. So thanks for joining me, everybody, and I will talk to you again very soon. Have a wonderful day. Bye for now.
