Create something today

Mary Schiller argues that creative blockage is an illusion and everyone has constant creative energy. She challenges you to make something today, start to finish, even if it's just a haiku or a sketch. Sharing what you create builds community and reminds you what you're actually capable of.

Hello there, this is Mary. I think that it's really easy for us to get into a routine, or you might even call it a rut, in our daily lives because we really can forget what we're truly capable of. And something that I do that reminds me of my capabilities is I create something. Because the truth of the matter is that we are a vessel of creativity. I mean, we are just brimming over with creativity, even in those moments when we feel like we're not. Even though we might feel creatively blocked or frustrated in some way, it's really just an illusion. We truly have all the creative flow and everything we need to create something amazing, uh, inside us and all around us all the time. So if you're game, after listening to this audio, I would love for you to create something from start to finish. Something that didn't exist when you got up this morning will exist before you go to sleep today. And it doesn't have to be a big deal. I don't know what time you might be listening to this. It might be right before you go to sleep. In which case you'll need to come up with something that you can create quickly. But it could be something as simple as a haiku poem, just a little paragraph that describes your day, maybe in a sensory way or a colorful way. It could be a photograph, just taking a photograph or drawing, drawing a little sketch, or whatever you feel compelled to do. I just find it a wonderful reminder of who I really am and what my— what the depth of my resources actually is, because I think we can go for long stretches of time and not feel very productive or creative, and and it's really just our thinking that is creating that illusion. And I find it really fun to just reach into that creative well and pull something out of what seems like thin air and just create something. It's really a wonderful, wonderful expression of what we're made of. So if you listen to this audio and you create something, I'd love for you to tell me about it or share it in a comment.
