How to start your coaching business (the REAL answer)

In this 60‑second Facebook Live style monologue, Mary Schiller (aka Mary in Paris), founder of the 5K Coach Club, welcomes new members of the free "Coach to 5K" Facebook group and outlines her philosophy for launching a successful coaching business. She shares her background—starting as a life coach in 2016, shifting to business coaching, and launching the 5K Coach Club in February 2023 to help coaches move from $0 to consistent $5,000‑per‑month revenues. Mary emphasizes that the decisive factor for coaches is adopting a true business mindset rather than treating coaching as a hobby. She advises focusing on a single social‑media platform, treating feedback and rejections analytically (adjusting content, studying competitors, reviewing sales calls), and maintaining consistency as part of a long‑term game. The talk stresses that success hinges on who you become—an entrepreneur‑coach—rather than on specific tech steps, and invites members to engage, ask questions, and look forward to regular Facebook Live sessions.

Hello, bonjour, bonsoir, how are you? It's Mary Schiller, also known as Mary in Paris. I am the founder of the 5K Coach Club and I'm in your— I am your fearless leader here in our free group called Coach to 5K. I wanted to come on here today and do a short short Facebook Live for a couple of reasons. One is that we have several new members, and I wanted to say a big welcome to you. I also wanted to take a moment to introduce myself, and gosh, so many questions, uh, that I've been seeing here and in other places that I could answer, but I want to answer primarily this question of how do I start and then how do I keep going as a coach? And there are many ways I could answer that, but, um, I have a very specific idea in mind. So let me take literally 60 seconds to introduce myself. I have been a coach now since 2016. I started as a life coach And then about 2, 2.5 years into my business, I started doing business coaching because a lot of other life coaches in particular were asking me how I had been able to ramp up my coaching business so quickly. So I started working with them, and even up until last year, I was still doing a little bit of life coaching, although I've completely switched to business coaching fully in 2023. And last month in February, I launched the 5K Coach Club, which is specifically designed to help coaches go from $0 to $5K months consistently in their business. So if you are in that predicament, if that describes you, then you're also in the right place in this free group because that is the entire focus of what we do here. And the reason that I have focused on that $0 to $5K group of people is because most coaches are in that bucket, if you will. So I know that most coaches struggle to get to that $5K mark, and I also know that most programs out there are not made for for you if that's the situation that you're in. Most of the things that you are looking at out there online, most of the coaching programs and, you know, online courses and things are not designed for you. This became very obvious to me sometime last year when I realized that so many of the things that are being sold to coaches really only work if you are at that $5K a month level already or higher. So I thought to myself, you know, this is something I know I can help people with because I've done it a lot over the years. So this is where I am going to put my focus because frankly, I don't think a lot of course creators and other coaches want to help people earn that first money because earning that first money and getting to those $5K months consistently is the hardest part of your business. It can be easier. I'm gonna tell you how in a second, but that is the hardest part. And I think that most people would rather work with coaches who are already making money, and I don't want to exclude you from the type of foundational training that you need to get to those $5K months. That doesn't seem fair to me. So that's why I really enjoy working with people who are just starting out, or maybe who have been coaches for a while and still haven't been able to reach $5,000 a month consistently. You are just everything to me, so I am really here to serve you. So I want to answer the question of how do I get started? How do I get started? There are many ways that I could answer that question, but as I was I was thinking about hosting this pop-up Facebook Live this morning, I was realizing that there's really only one answer that I feel is genuinely helpful to you, and that's about what attitude you bring to your coaching. In all my years of working with coaches, there's always one thing that sets people apart. The thing that allows some people to start earning money relatively quickly and ramp up their income, and the people who stay stuck either not making any money or making so little that it's just not worth their time. And that difference is the people who make it approach this as a business. I'm gonna say that again. Approaching this as a business is the key that unlocks everything. It's not a hobby. It's not something that you just kind of do when you feel like it. It's an actual business. That is what makes The difference, and let me tell you why. A big reason why that makes such a big difference is because when you approach your coaching business as a business, then you stop taking things so personally. For example, let's say you are just starting out and you start posting on social media. Let's say you're using one platform, which is what I advise people to do. Don't try to spread yourself everywhere, it's not possible. Focus on one platform. And let's say you're not getting much traction and you keep doing this for a while and you're still not getting much interaction or engagement. Instead of falling into this place of, oh my gosh, it's me, they hate me, I'm doing something wrong, you know, nobody loves me, all that kind of stuff, what you end up doing instead when you approach it as a business is, okay, those posts aren't working. What needs to be different about them? Is it the topics? Maybe the content isn't right for the audience that I'm trying to reach. Who can I look at as an example? Not to copy or plagiarize, but who's in my same space who's killing it? Let me just see what types of subjects they're covering. I can put my own spin on them. I can You know, see how they're integrating their own stories into their posts. You know, how are they doing that? And you start to approach things from a more objective perspective. It's not all so personal. Another example, let's say you have someone meet you on Zoom and you're discussing whether or not you're the right coach for them and you make an offer and they say no, they're not interested, or, you know, they don't indicate that they want to work with you, however the conversation goes. You don't take it personally. You hang up the Zoom call and you say, okay, that person wasn't a good fit. Was it because something in my marketing was bringing in the wrong type of person? If so, then that needs to be adjusted. Could I have done a better job on the call? Yes. Okay, so let's look at the call and see what I did, you know, and make some adjustments there. So all this to say, when you approach your coaching business as a real business, it frees you from all of that stuff in your head about failure, about not being good enough, about not being smart enough, about whatever it is, whatever story is going on, that just falls by the wayside because now you're really seeing this as a business that you are building and creating. It becomes almost— I've told this to people over the years, it almost starts to take on the life of some kind of creation or piece of art that you're making, or, you know, it starts to be a real expression of what is within you without having all of that personal emotional stuff all wrapped up into it. And so it's just super duper important for coaches who have been struggling or who you know, really are trying to get to that $5K mark to realize that the biggest secret is not a strategy. It's more about who you are being when you are approaching this business. Are you being the hobbyist? Are you being the coach who's just trying to get some money in the door? Or are you being a business person? And I just noticed my battery's running down here, so I'm going to wrap this up here in just a moment. But this will also help you in terms of consistency and what you do next. When you are continually approaching this as a business, when you are analyzing what's going on from that perspective and taking proper steps after that, it helps you to stay consistent because it starts to be more of a game. This is a long game. This is not a short-term thing. This is a long game that you're playing, and it's something that I want you to take seriously. And I don't mean seriously like, oh, it can't be fun because I find business and all of this incredibly fun. Even when I have low years like I had in 2022, it's still been fun for me to figure out a way out of that and to try some new things, which I'm doing now. It can be incredibly exciting and fun, and it will start to exercise a different part of yourself. And your intellect and your creative powers. So I'd love to hear your thoughts and comments on this because I could have very easily come on here and said, well, to start your coaching business, first you have to set up social media accounts and then you have to set up an email service and then you have to have a freebie and then you have to have a landing page and then you have to have— you know all of that already, basically. You might have some tech questions in there, and things like that and about the nuances, but you know that part. The part that I don't feel is being discussed enough is that you're not just a coach trying to earn money. You are an entrepreneur. You are in business. And the sooner you start to adopt that persona along with being a sensitive and really good coach, the easier it will be for you to reach those $5K months and beyond. So let me know what you think and welcome to this group. I am here to help, so feel free to post in here, and I check frequently. I am hoping to start doing, uh, 1 or 2 Facebook Lives a week starting next week. Well, I guess I can start this week because this one counts, so look for more of these, and I'm so glad that you're here. Thanks so much, and have a wonderful day or evening wherever you are in the world. Talk to you again soon. Bye.
