Looking for a "how to" in business? Look here, instead

Mary Schiller argues that business success isn't about finding the perfect how-to or mindset. Instead, listen to your inner calling beneath the mental noise, take imperfect action, and share your message on free platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Genuine connections follow when you speak from the heart.

Hi there, it's Mary. How are you? I am your friendly fairy butt kicker and the leader of this group, Banish the Butt. I wanted to jump on for a short Facebook Live. If you're joining me live, awesome, thank you. If you're watching this on the replay, I really appreciate it. I had made a post yesterday yesterday, I think it was, or maybe today, I can't remember. And I said that the how-to of business in particular is just not as important as people think it is. I have learned this lesson over and over and over again since I started my business in early 2016, and it's the one thing that keeps popping up. I hear this message now from all kinds of people. Sorry, they're doing construction next door. I hope that's not too disruptive. But the thing is, it's not mindset either. To me, the word mindset doesn't mean very much because the mind is never set. We're constantly having all kinds of thoughts go through our minds all day long. What is important to recognize is what is beneath all of that— the power that you have, the gift that you have, the message that you have. The thing that is calling to your heart to do, that is what matters most of all, is that you start to listen to that first step and then act on that. So it's one thing to have dreams and goals and all these beautiful things that you want to create and put out into the world. It's wonderful to want to have a successful business and make lots of money and make lots of impact and all those things, The second part is you have to act on that. And where people get stuck is they keep looking for the perfect how-to. So they think, oh, I don't know what to do, so I better go look and see what someone's going to tell me to do. And what I'm suggesting is that you can simply start acting rather than waiting to find the perfect how-to. Start doing things. Start most of all making yourself visible. Let people know what you're about. Let people know what you're doing and start sharing. Start inviting people into your universe because that's how people get to know how wonderful you are. And if you have nerves around being visible and all of that, I do too. Everybody does. It's okay, because the people who love you will find you as soon as you start putting yourself out there. So rather than continually seeking the how-to, start answering the thing inside that is calling to you, and then start acting from that beautiful, gorgeous place of love and generosity and all those incredible qualities that you possess naturally— creativity, start using these amazing platforms we've been given to use for free. I still can't believe it's free to use something like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, whatever platform you love to use and where your people are. Start putting yourself out there. It's amazing what can happen quickly if you simply give yourself permission to be yourself, to start speaking from your heart, to invite people to learn more about you, to connect with them. That, as messy as it looks, is how it happens. You don't need to worry about the specific how-tos nearly as much as you think you do. At certain points, you might think, gosh, I wonder how I could do this better. Then you can go look for something that might help you with that. But that's where people get stuck, is they think they have to start there. And I'm saying just start, okay? I'd love to hear what you think about this message. Please feel free to leave a comment. I hope you're having an amazing day wherever you are in the world. I will talk to you again soon. Thanks so much for being here. Bye for now.
