Stuck? Maybe not ...

Mary Schiller argues that feeling stuck isn't about circumstances but about listening to fear instead of your inner guidance. The difference between people who move forward and those who don't is simple: successful people act despite scary thoughts, not because they don't have them.

Hello, hello, it's Mary Schiller, author and coach of MarySchiller.com. I hope you are enjoying your day today wherever you may be in the world. I was just going out for a walk in my neighborhood and decided to jump on here and do a short Facebook Live. And as you can see, things are quite bustling around here today. The weather is absolutely beautiful here in Paris and everybody's out enjoying it in the cafes. I don't know if you can see Behind me there's lots of full cafes today with lots of people sitting outside as always. There's been a topic on my mind recently that is really compelling that I'm quite interested in, and I've talked about it a bit before and I'm sure I will talk about it again. It has to do with the whole notion of being stuck and whether or not it's actually possible for us to be stuck, for one thing, and for another thing is, why is it that some people seem to be able to kind of keep going— hi, Therese— even if they feel stuck? How is it that some people take steps anyway and make progress on their goals and dreams, and other people seem to stay sort of stagnant? So I'm going to talk about that second question today, and to me it always boils down to the same, uh, answer. Which is that the reason why it seems to me— and I'm perfectly willing to be wrong, this is how it looks to me today— it seems to me that the reason why some people are able to move forward and are able to do the things that they really want to do with their lives and help other people and, and set goals and maybe have the good fortune of meeting those goals is because they simply listen. Let me say it again, they simply don't listen to thinking that tells them otherwise. That's it. They don't listen to any thinking that tells them otherwise. They know well enough to ignore it, and they also know that within them is everything that they need to do what they would like to do. Obviously, there's no guarantees as to outcomes, but the people who are listening to something past that kind of noisy, buzzy thinking that seems to be all in our heads all the time, the people who are listening beyond that, who know that they don't need to pay attention to it, who are listening to something deeper within themselves, and who simply aren't willing to go down the dark tunnel of doubt and follow that because they know there's nothing there for them— those seem to be the people who make progress, who create amazing things in the world, and help other people. So there's no such thing as a person who cannot do that. Every single human being has the access to the same resources. We all have access to unlimited creativity, unlimited everything. It's right here, right now, at our fingertips all the time. It comes to us via new ideas. That's one of the wonderful things about how we're designed, is that there is never going to be a time when you don't have a creative possibility to follow. But it seems to me it's whether or not you follow those creative possibilities and ignore all of the thinking to the contrary or not. So every single person who we might call successful has had scary thinking. Every single one. That's just how human beings are made. They simply ignore it and go do the thing that they want to do and forget about the consequences. They seem to have an intuitive sense that there is more to life than whatever thoughts are running through their heads, even if they never have an explicit awareness of that. It seems like they know that. Hi, Debbie. So I guess that's my main message for you today, is that if there is something that you really want you can go do that. Whatever thoughts you have to the contrary need not be listened to or followed, because we are never obligated to go down a rabbit hole of thinking we don't like and feelings we don't like. We don't ever have to do that. We have the power. We are the power in this equation, and we can do what we want to and explore what we want and basically live the way that we want to live, no matter what is going through our minds at any given time. That stuff is inconsequential. It's giving us a human being experience of having up and down feelings, and it's the delivery system for new ideas, and that's it. Beyond that, we never again have to look at the content of our thinking, ever. Ever. That was a revelation to me. So, uh, like for myself, you know, I still have lots of scary, weird thinking. You know, I'll put something new out to my audience and I'll wonder, you know, what are they going to think about this? Is this okay? And I'm like, whatever, I don't care. I'm listening to something past that, and I'm acting on something past that. And what is past that is our true self. And our true power and what is really on offer to us and available to us. So I hope this has been helpful to you today. I'm gonna go on a short walk before I get to talk to some wonderful clients this afternoon. Please feel free to post a comment here or wherever you're watching this video. And if you'd like to get in touch with me, I'm always available by email, mary@marieschiller.com. I'll talk to you again soon. Bye!
