I'm Homeless so I Came to Dubai - What Does a Typical Day in Life look Like? - Doc the Journey Ep 78

A first-person vlog by Matt Kelly documenting arrival in Dubai with colleague Florian Goose. The clip covers a flat tour and view, a typical workday routine (jet lag, time-zone tradeoffs, calls, gym scheduling), reflections on whether to live in Dubai versus London (including observations about UK taxation and entrepreneurship culture), operational notes about Spacegoods and delegation, and lifestyle shots (renting a car, driving an R8). The tone is informal, exploratory and intermittently self-critical; the piece mixes practical logistics with broader thoughts about creativity, team structure, and long-term location choices.

Yo, we just got to Dubai. Airbnb. First time in the last year being here. Haven't been here since December 23rd. I was reminiscing on actually the times I've been to, but I was only 18. 2018, 19, 2020 then I think 21, when I was having a big breakup and the business was falling apart and then didn't come 22, came 23 twice. And then back here, what crazily is the end of 2024, how this looks? Bit of a fucking tour in a two bed here with Flo, who works with me on operations. It's pretty cozy, to be fair. Let me take you outside. This is back on the pure vlog. Spec videos like I used to do. Marina, gate area. Very cozy. Still not convinced if I could fully live here or not, but fucking, I'm getting vertigo looking down. I'm gonna drop the camera, but it is pretty nice. If I was gonna live here, I'd definitely live somewhere like this. So I think, you know, massive view, massive balcony, lots of room. Fucking hell. That looks pretty wavy. Yeah, Dubai's got a lot of appeal during winter for sure. I don't know if I could do the full year, obviously. I guess most people don't do the full year. Cozy little bedroom. Not much to see here, really. It's just two bed flat, cozy bathroom. Maybe I should not do point of view. Probably look better and then back out. So, yeah, it's probably, what, I don't know, a thousand square feet, something like that. This is the sort of place I probably would want to live if I moved here, at least initially. Like know the area. Got mates around here, obviously. Nice view, decent work spot. I'd probably turn the second bedroom into an office if I moved here with the misses which is probably what I would do. So, yeah, I'll make some more content this week. Probably better than this little clip because I just walked in very tired off the back of a flight. I fucking like those chairs. It's like cozy cow style ones. No, I do not want to drop this camera. Yeah, we're back in Dubai. Try and get thumbnail. It's been a while. Time flies. Very, very different to London. London vibes. Which isn't anything no one already knows, obviously. But yeah, that's my little flat tour. Gonna sit down, probably do some work and then I'll catch you in a bit. Bosch, You should feature on the pod. Yeah.
Spacegoods headquarter.
It's the international head of operations, Florian Goose, COO at spacegoods. The man behind every operational part of the entire business. The German ghost, testing the view and the low light camera. So back to the OG midnight vlogs, Day one, day night, day one, night one, Dubai. Basically locked in, working all day to come to a foreign country to get some sun. You just sit inside doing the exact same shit you do at home. It's the irony, yo, it's Wednesday morning. The irony is I come to Dubai in a nice sunny place away from cold, horrible Britain, when I sit at my desk pretty much all day, at least right now, working on stuff because there's too much to do and then you leave and think, I didn't do anything that was in Dubai. I just came and sat in a flat in the same way I do in the uk, in Dubai, looking out of the sun. So probably gonna try and get out and actually do some shit, rent a car, all the typical Dubai stuff the next few days. But yeah, time zones are good. But for me, I don't really train in the gym in the morning, so sorry, I have my sensual jazz playing. I don't really train in the gym in the morning typically and I'm very jet lagged, weirdly, even though it's only four hours, I've been getting up at like 10am, which is not good. And then by that point I feel like I need to work. So I have calls that start like 12 because I have calls that start at 8am, usually far too many calls. And then I can't train in the afternoon because my late morning calls are in the afternoon. So the time zone thing that people say is great, maybe I probably would be great if I got up at 7am to be fair. But definitely challenging when I'm getting up at 10am because I've been going to bed at like 2am so yeah, very busy right now, lots of things to do, constantly feel like I'm massively behind, don't reply to any of my emails, half my Slack messages are not done. I'm trying to time block to actually get shit done. I mean they're just getting incredibly or more ADHD as I get older, which everyone is apparently these days. But I definitely feel like I am or I'm just getting so busy and I need to delegate more, which I'm trying to do as well. So yeah, this is like a typical morning in Dubai. See all the glamorous, but really I'm just staring at a laptop and I hate working on laptop, but obviously with this stuff it's better. And this is the usual setup. Nicotine gum Coffee hydration, maybe the scope for a space goods gum of some sort. I don't know. But yeah, the view is pretty cozy. So yeah, I will update a little bit later on. I appear to be back on YouTube vlogs which some people like. I used to feel incredibly cringe doing these, like facing the camera and so on, especially when I look incredibly rough. But it episode 79, subscribe to the pod. Catch you in a bit. Yo, what's going on? I look blind in this video. I'm in a weird habit now of filming when I just got up and I still feel jet lagged out here and I look like shit. The benefit of the Dubai time zone is that I should train in the morning. Let me spin this round. I can't fucking see anything. I should train in the morning because then you get the benefit of training. Getting done, having the free time. Get it done. Having the free time and then training. Sorry. And then working the rest of the day with the UK time zone and then just being able to lock in in the evening. Whereas I'm in this habit of. Because I've done it in the uk, I just go to my desk, work for like four hours before anyone's up, and then work all day through the afternoon and then get to the evening and find that I'm working. Sorry. And then I'm going to the gym then, which isn't optimum. So I might try and go to the gym shortly. Yeah, I said this before, but the irony is I've come to Dubai to test it out, see what it's like actually live in. Which is kind of true what I'm doing. I'm just fucking working from here. But then I also haven't really got any sun. We haven't rented a car, we're doing that today, probably gonna do a yacht tomorrow. Haven't done many particularly fun things. I'm also trying to work out like is Dubai. And I met one of my investors, Jimmy yesterday and friends, and I was speaking about this, I said like, he's like, oh, you're gonna come here at some point. I was like, maybe. But I wonder if it's like a place you come when you're retired and you've made it. And I very much haven't made it. I'm very much still in the trenches, locked in, trying to build the thing that gets me there. There's two sides to one side is like, well, if you come here then you're kind of cut off from like reality, so to speak, back home. Everyone here is like doing cool shit and successful. And maybe that's too much of a retirement attitude. There's lots of people around here, around you, that have made it. If you haven't made it yet and you're working on it, maybe it's not the best place to be. The other side is. Well, that's the best place to be because you meet people like that and you set the standard and you don't have the UK mindset of tall poppy syndrome and all that. And this is all obvious stuff. I've been here many times before, but I do really think maybe this is a video in itself for another time. I do really feel, and maybe I'm just an idiot, but I think a lot of founders feel it. I think the uk, it's become a place that feels, and I don't know, there's maybe no fact to this, but to me it feels like it doesn't support entrepreneurship. You know, they put taxes up, you get taxed on everything, you get taxed on your salary, your profit, you pay vat, you pay employer tax, you then pay cgt. If you manage to sell any equity or the business, you then pay inheritance tax. If you one day make it, give it to your kids. I don't know, just feels weird. I'm not necessarily anti tax, I just think the whole vibe is odd. And I won't go into the other recent political things because definitely a lot, a lot of other factors currently in the UK that just make me feel like it's not the best place to be as an ambitious founder, because I think founders see the world in a certain way, almost always similarly to each other, at least in my experience. And then, you know, a lot of not entrepreneurial people, people that have more normal jobs and yeah, we just view the world differently. So, yeah, I think locking in here could be fucking good, to be honest, because at the end of the day, if I'm just going to lock in, then this is perfect, perfect place. You can get a bit of sun in the morning, you can work out, get your office set up, which I don't have property here, but if I moved here, I would, you know, proper desk, big screen, etc. Drop a proper chair and then you just hang around with other entrepreneurial people. Whereas in the uk, I don't know, the energy is just different, at least for me. Maybe it's just. Maybe I've just got in my head that I don't like being in London and I kind of feel like I have to be there because the team is there. And we're hiring a lot of people there, which I think does make sense. But I guess my vision for how I run the business, maybe long term, and this is why I'm hiring an ND and a few other key roles right now, is that I work best when I have the freedom to go be in different places and be a bit more nomadic. That's just how I enjoy living. It's always been at my core, really, which I've probably not recognized enough in the past. So yeah, I think the vision is kind of build the team and build the hub of the business in London. I do think that makes sense. I've flip flopped on it a little bit, but I think there is definitely value to having the core team together a lot of the time. And then I will be there as and when I want to be. I mean, right now it's a lot, but I'm talking like in the future, you know, 6, 12, 18 months time, 24 months time, maybe I'm in different places working on more of the creative stuff. So I think for me to be creative, which I feel like I've lacked recently, I need to be in a place that inspires me. And certainly a flat in rainy London in the winter doesn't do that for me, at least not right now. So, yeah, I don't know. Some thoughts. I'm rambling. This video is probably gonna be a shit one because it's just loads of random clips of me rambling when I realize I should probably record today what's on, gonna go gym, a lot of work to do, monthly finance call later with our investors, which we always have, which is always. Turns out the month went. Last month was decent. We probably spent too much on marketing, to be completely honest. Wasn't as efficient as I would like, but we grew a lot, built the subscriber base and then we're probably gonna get a car and then do the whole Dubai thing. So yeah, I don't know, I'm rambling. Maybe I'll film later when I'm feeling a bit more mentally coherent, having been up for a few more hours and had my rainbow dust and electrolytes. So yeah, just some thoughts. Do people actually watch this shit and think this is valuable? I don't know. I mean, a lot of people watch the pod. I say this in every video, but drop a comment on anything that would be like genuinely interesting or useful to see because I do feel like I come on here with absolutely no plan and I just document shit, which is the nature of the channel. But maybe I should get a bit more intentional with it going forward. So. Yeah, let me know. Catch you in a bit. Back in the iconic R8. Give me flashbacks of 2019. 2020. Best car I ever owned. This one's a B10 plus Spider Gen 3. So slightly different to what I had. But we're gonna rip the roof off and give this a crack. Straight or left? Or I'll just round the round of loop. Basically. Yeah.
I think what we can do is probably go right and shake Zyron into the other direction. And then we go left to get a bit more driving. So just go right.
Maybe go from there. Try and hold the camera there. Maybe this well, no, don't put it there. Just hold it. If the angle's any good.
Is there any way to check the.
Angle easily or not really. Oh, no, no. You can turn it to tilt us. So press the button three times. Press the main button three times. You can tilt it down with the button, by the way. That's how you control it. Reminiscing on the old days of the R8. I don't know if you can hear anything. I'm saying miss this V. Gotta go.
Right into the next options. You get Monara Street.
Still not really able to open her up. There's not enough road. Chaotic drive through Dubai as always. Back in the R8. Reminiscing on 2019. Very impractical. Which I wouldn't have said back in the day, but I do want to an R8 again at some point. Maybe sell this business and do it properly this time. Smells the same as my old car. Interior is the same. Just the updated facelift, so definitely nicer. I'd have one of these over Hurricane any day of the week. I just Going straight. Yeah. And then. Right. Sam.
