Scaling an 8 Figure Brand from Bali: Spacegoods Founder Routine & Raw Behind the scenes - Doc Ep 97

Matthew Kelly narrates a day-in-the-life vlog from Bali focused on running his Spacegoods business remotely while maintaining fitness and routine. He describes sleep and jet-lag effects, challenges delegating as a founder and avoiding micromanagement, a consistent morning ritual (mushroom coffee, creatine, sun exposure), a tough outdoor training session cut short by heat, touring a six-bedroom villa where he and other entrepreneurs are staying, and practical notes on work schedule/time-zone management, product flavors (Rainbow Dust Coffee, other Spacegoods flavors), and a recent NAD+ drip experience.

Just espresso keeps me on track. I won't be late. Liquid courage. So this is the. Well, my Balinese routine, I guess it is 9:00am I needed a deep sleep to catch up last night because I slept like three hours the night before, which is the perils of jet lag. The night before that I was actually fine because I didn't sleep prior night. So kind of same thing this time. Slept all last night, sorry the night before, which is Sunday night and then Monday night. I slept last night pretty well because I was just so. So, yeah, three hours of sleep. My brain felt like it was like a trial run of being an NPC. So if my IQ is like 55, that's probably what it feels like, which would be tough. Not very productive yesterday as a result. So I have lots to catch up on today. The thing I'm. Well, the thing I always struggle with actually is there's an endless list of things to do. And excuse my bed hair by the way, is what it is. There's an endless list of things to do at all times, especially as a founder because you kind of make your own work and if you get the work done, more work creates itself. It's like I often get stuck doing little things that need to be done and then as a result the big things that probably need a day per thing don't get done. Which is why I think I need to get better at not being involved in everything. But that in itself is a bit of a challenge for me right now because, yeah, honestly, I think the biggest challenge or theme right now that I'm struggling with is how do you delegate fully, which is easier in certain areas for me than others, and then not get accused of micromanaging when you get involved at all. And yeah, I don't know. I think because I've been a competent generalist basically my whole career and in this business and I've done everything. It's not like I didn't have a clue about supply chain, so I could never comment on that. I did it myself. So it makes it hard to fully step back. Yeah, those two things. How to split my time, how to. Sounds ridiculous, but how to not piss off certain team members by doing my job as a founder and ultimately CEO. Yeah, this is pretty much my morning routine. I'm not just doing this for show. This is what I have every day and have for like the last year. I have a rainbowless coffee and of course this beauty hydro dust, watermelon plus creatine, which is my own addition. Weather's been slightly disappointing so far because normally I'd sit here and sunbathe trying to fix this horrible rig that I've developed over the past few months. I'm about a stone too heavy, far too pasty white, not in my prime aesthetic era anymore. But I am trying to get back there and Bali is a decent place to do it. Lots of good food, lots of training and I find sun generally like. Well it feels like it boosts my testosterone and therefore generally boosts my fat burning abilities, etc. So yeah, this is pretty much the routine right now. As I said, it's a bit of a temporary setup. I'm in this smaller, less fancy villa for like a. Well not even a week. Six nights, two more nights to go and then moving to a much bigger, nicer one with a bunch of other scalers that are coming out. Yeah, that'd be cool. So I'm gonna rent obviously like a proper screen and a chair and stuff. I don't really like doing laptop but obviously you gotta make it work. So yeah, that's the morning routine for now. And boom. I might also linked in my link tree or something like my favorite lock in tunes and get something going there. Oh, this one's got lyrics. Though it's not always ideal for me. On the road to the sub one Hyrux my coaches program is brutal but also training outside is way harder. That was meant to be four sets. It took me longer to do three sets than it would normally fall inside an aircon gym. Just a lot of threshold work. I also need to lose about a stone of fat as you'll have seen. Fuck me. Training outside I feel like it has maybe a similar benefit in short time, but it's just demotivating because it feels feels harder even for the same work in like a bad way which I think is just my body acclimatizing. So I reckon on a good course I'm in like 103, 104 shape right now when the hardwalk's open. PB being one of six. But obviously we're chasing someone which is going to be a significant step up which I'm trying to do by December in London. In those sessions I think why the fuck am I doing this? But yeah, halfway through this session I got some rowing to do now but I might get inside because the heat just doesn't feel healthy. It's fucking tough. Feels seriously off today due to do 40 minutes. My brutal once a week 5 by 8 minute progression intervals did on Saturday. Felt amazing today. Way hotter aircon shit. Heart rate felt way too high so I to cut it short. Three set, three sets in, but I can just tell when my body's a bit. Always assume it's cardio issues and get about my chest, but I think it's electrolytes and whatever else. Just heat. So not my finest hour. Got these curtains to block out the heat, but aircon in here in the middle of the day at like 32 degrees, it's not working very well. So I'll be cutting this one short, sadly. But I think sometimes over training it's not worth it. It's just completely folksy and I'm always the most sweaty person in the gym, which is slightly embarrassing. But if you want to go sub one high rocks, that's what it takes. So yeah, just walking off because heart rate feels. And I've been in pretty peak fitness recently, to be honest. Felt amazing the other week. Reckon I'm in probably low eighteens, 5kg territory now at 93kg, which isn't as good as I was in Marathon time 2 1/2 years ago, but getting back there. But yeah, this session was a write off. So there we go. All right, fellas, we are in the new villa we were in. Well, we, I, I, my, me and my girlfriend, we were in a little two bed before, but now we're here in a big six bed. I look terrible so I'm not going to feature in this very much. This is very like big Bali style, not like super luxurious, but big open plan, bougie, high ceilings, massive pool, etc. I think my mate Jem lived in a place like this last year. Don't know if he was running it, if it was like long term, but I think it might have even been the same development but a different part. Super high ceilings, pretty sick, low cut sofa, sitting area, whatever. I think this is like 500 pound a night between five of us. It's honestly not even a lot, but I guess it's relatively a lot for Bali. But you get way better value when you come in groups. I'm gonna go this way obviously, pool area. But yeah, 500 pound a night for a month is obviously 15 grand a month, which is a lot for Bali, but we didn't book it for a month. So bedrooms, like I said, five bedroom. This one also has a living room. Weirdly, that's a pretty interesting angle. Pool probably won't be going in that much to be honest, but maybe some sunbathing. There's like a rooftop thing up there, but there's nothing actually on There. Even though I think on the Airbnb listing there was obviously sunbathing area. Pretty cozy. I mean, up there is just. You won't be able to hear me. Bedrooms, obviously. Two bedrooms up there. Bedroom there, bedroom there. Living room, kitchen. My bedroom, which will come around to in a second. This is like a living room thing where we have a walking pad that isn't working. Aircon is very good, which is a requirement. I just came in here today, so it's not fully organized. I've actually got the biggest room. I should, because I came first, but I wanted the coziest room with the best view. But obviously anywhere I come, I'm not actually on a holiday. I'm usually working just as much, if not more so. Got the ergonomic chairs, they call it. It's not as ergonomic as I'm used to. Standing desk, 32 inch screen. And yeah, pretty cozy setup. So that'll be me for the next at least two weeks. Might extend slightly longer. Me, I need a haircut again. This reminds me of when I did that Marbella Villator, like three years ago. I mean, that was Marbella, Bali. Very different things. I think if I had to pick one long term, it would definitely be Marbella, like location, time zone, etc. But Bali does have a special call to it once a year. And every year I come here, I say I'll never come back. So I get Bali belly or dengue like I did last year or whatever, but tends to bring me back, funnily enough, something quite tropical and magical about it. Even though it's definitely like the world hq, the digital nomad. And no one wants to be a digital nomad. That is definitely a derogatory term when I say that. Like the upwork, freelancer, et cetera. Nothing wrong with that stuff starting out. But yeah, I don't think it's necessary, like the best for your mindset if you're just hanging around with people I don't know, freelancing for two hours a day and then going to the beach, drinking beers every day, which isn't what I do. I probably used to do more of that, but a bit more locked in these days. For better or for worse. How the do I get in? So, yeah, that is. I haven't really done a full tour. I mean, it's obviously pretty open plan. There's not a huge amount to show, to be honest. But I like these sort of environments when you got a bunch of scalers in them. So some big names coming through. Jordan Hill, Adam Reed, which you may or may not know from previous episodes. On one of my longest standing, like, entrepreneurial friend groups. Always just good chat and then two other guys that actually I've never met before but are friends with them, so. And they've got some Amazon business. So, yeah, it's always a decent, decent setup. And yeah, my girlfriend's here as well, so I think she's the only girl, which might be a bit weird, but I'd rather rather the guys and her be here than just her for like four weeks, I can't lie. So, yeah, I've got to go and jump on a call, which is the issue with the time zone, because I tend to do calls at 3pm till 9pm, but hopefully I got a thumbnail in there somewhere and if not, I'll get one now. Barley Villa version two. Boom. Very chaotic right now. This is like a little apartment. It's a room, obviously. And then we've got like a living room in here, which is pretty cozy, to be fair. And my girlfriend wanted a walking pad because you don't get many steps in Bali, which is fair. It's fair, but not something I ever think about. And you obviously got a chair. Not as good as my Herman Miller bag home standing desk and a 32 inch screen. But the problem with this screen is it doesn't have a webcam built in, so that's a bit annoying. So you have to, like, open your laptop, of course. I should have really booked studio display, but this is the lock in zone for now. It's kind of Goblin mode again, but much more ergonomic. And I find the big screen is way more productive. But, yeah, it's always funny. People say, I'll have a great trip, blah, blah, blah, and I'm like, well, I'm basically just working the same, if not more than I was back home, just in a different country, which is still worth something because obviously different gyms, different time off at the weekend, etc. Which is usually half a day. And, you know, you can go to cool places. I think just being in a place that's different for me opens up my brain again and makes me more positive and ambitious and keen to crack on with stuff. So, yeah, I really genuinely value the change I've seen. Even if other people be like, oh, you're in Bali, what's the point? How do you run a business from there? But, like, you can definitely run a fucking business from Bali. I just think you can run a business from anywhere. Ultimately, obviously, I can't be in the Office. But yeah, I've got a good team in place. I'm only here for a few weeks. Yeah, I was obviously in the office loads in recent months and I think the relationships are strong enough now that I don't need to be there all the time. And yeah, I'm going to crack on with some morning admin. All the windows super muggy. This is the downside to Asia. You come in not rainy season and it's still rainy as. But yeah, this is my morning routine. It's like 9am I work late, it's 2am in the UK. Do a bit of work after I've made my space goods, obviously. But yeah, for me the day always starts with this is actually probably our best flavor, at least recently. I personally default to where is it? Coffee flavor. So I rip that. I do hydro packaging's fucked. And I mix that with creatine, which may or may not be something to do with the product we're doing next. But yeah, always a bit sus bringing this into Bali, but they say Lionsman stuff. So coffee decaf coffee, which isn't for me, best selling new flavor in one of the packaging. So I fucked with coffee. Caramel, that is a banger. Tend to have that for a second drink less first drink another coffee and then this, which is I think online now, but we haven't hard launched it yet, which is Astrochart, which is also banging. To be fair, our flavors are banging right now. I think a lot of brands miss misunderstand the importance of flavor. So something we definitely get right, I think. Didn't ever imagine I'd be the type to vlog my fucking morning routine. Very wholesome. This is almost Back to like 2017. Matt. Don't know what's come over me. Just suddenly feel like I may as well film stuff. So that's what I'm doing anyway. About five grams of creatine. Never weigh it out. A large serving of hydro, mix that together. Then the main event, which is I haven't got enough space goods. Given there's five lads in this house now and one girl again, I tend to never actually weigh it out, so I probably end up having a massive portion. But yeah, honestly, don't sleep on this. I feel like Rainbow Dust Coffee is legitimately the best mushroom coffee product on the market in its current form and it's going to be improved even further soon. So, yeah, very bullish. Only drink the filtered machine water here obviously, if anyone that's not been to Bali. Oh. So yeah, that's pretty much Well, I said that's the morning routine. That's one small part of the morning routine. Yeah, up about 9am When I'm here, have this. I would sunbathe for like 10 minutes, get the circadian rhythm moving, but obviously it's very much pissing it down and not very nice and the ground's gonna be wet and don't be sat outside. So yeah, I'll have this. Probably work for, like I say I try and work for less an hour in the morning and then go gym. But the problem is if I start working, I get like into the flow and then my brain starts spinning and I don't want to break, don't want to break the flow. But then I end up going to the gym too late and like I have calls from like 4pm this time to like 9am UK time being seven hours ahead. So ideally you do like an hour work now go to gym about 10, half 10 this time. So still like half 3 UK time. I can spend like 2 and a half hours. Gym, sauna, ice bath, sunbathe, all stuff I would do later in the day if I was in the UK without the sunbathing part and then come back and basically start a full work day from about 2pm after I've eaten lunch, etc and then that's obviously what 7am UK time. Do like two hours deep work on stuff that doesn't involve calls I need to do myself and then I usually have calls. I reckon I have far too many calls. There's often like big high leverage tasks or projects I want to. I need to finish like this rebrand stuff. I haven't paid enough attention to that recently. I've been dragging so many other things and yes, classic case of working on the business rather than in the business. Right. I'm trying to work in the business way less and on the business more. Especially right now when there's like key things that need to be done but they keep getting pushed back. Like I make it a key to do list or like a power list, whatever. For example, like the Monday list, half of that's still on today and it's fucking Friday, which is not good. But it's also just the reality and a sign that there's a lot going on and I can't do everything in like one day. But. Yeah, I will show you to the desk. Not bad. I've had mild Bali belly the past few days, but I'm surviving, I think more than last year. I'm just taking like probiotics. I feel like it always just fucking gets you at some point. I mean, it's more like. I also did a NAD plus drip at the weekend. I don't ever heard of that before. It's like a thing that people in Hollywood do, and it completely fucked me up. It's meant to make you feel amazing, but it gave me, like, a severe fever for, like, 48 hours. Apparently, that's your body reacting to it now. I feel fine, but that was quite interesting. Yeah, exactly. It's meant to, like, revitalize your cells and flush out toxins. I don't know. Apparently it's legit, but I'd never done it before, so it kind of fucked me up. So, yeah, it was a bit intense.
