Showing you Inside My Ad Accounts & Feeling Uninspired - Documenting the journey - Episode 15

YouTube episode in which creator Matthew Kelly records a candid, unscripted update about feeling uninspired while running his business. He reflects on boredom/stagnation in the day-to-day, the tension between romanticizing ‘movie-moment’ highs versus mundane grind, and then pivots to a practical walkthrough showing his Facebook, TikTok and Google ad accounts, high-level spend and inventory updates. The episode mixes personal reflection, operational transparency (ad spend, stock arrival), and brief product/marketing notes.

Yo. So back with another episode of Documenting the Journey. What episode are we on? I think 15 or 16. I was saying on Twitter I basically couldn't be fuck doing an episode this week because I'm actually recording this on Saturday morning, normally doing like Wednesday night because I felt like there wasn't that much going on. Probably just pretty mundane. Then I put it on Twitter and everyone said, fucking do it anyway. And then I thought, actually there's probably some shit I could share, but I didn't write notes for once. I'm doing a loom. I don't know if you can see my screen currently. Let me see. Yeah, I was going to share my screen, but I'll put it on screen in a second. Yeah, I didn't write. No, it's going to try and keep this, like, fairly short for once. But I guess long and short of it is I felt pretty unmotivated, uninspired to do anything profound in the business this week, maybe as well as just actually record it. But I suppose this is the sort of episode that in the interest of transparency, authenticity, the whole premise of this Documenting the Journey thing and consistency is sort of episode. Sort of episode I have to put up really, when I don't feel like doing it. And I don't feel super inspired to speak on camera and pretend everything's fucking super exciting all the time, because it's not. And I suppose in like two or three years time, these will maybe be the sort of episodes that are more interesting. I'm gonna dive into something in a minute because it'll sort of mix up and actually show some shit on screen for once. But, yeah, Fuck, I mean, I get so many messages. People telling me, like, my podcast inspires them, you know, my life inspires them. Like on Instagram and Twitter, maybe, like, I don't know, 20 to 30 a day, probably on average, which is crazy. And I'm really glad that the shit I put out inspires people, but it kind of feels weird when I go through a period where I just feel completely fucking flat about everything, to be honest. Like, stuff is going well, like we're growing and stuff. It's more just sometimes I start feel fucking motivated. That's just the reality. I think it's very easy to come on YouTube and, like, put this whole Persona on of, like, everything's perfect and everything's really exciting all the time. But honestly, it's not. I find I have found, particularly in the past week, just the process of getting on with things and moving the needle to be pretty mundane. And I don't know if that's, you know, that is normal, I'm sure. But I don't know if that's. Because maybe I need to switch up my routine for going to, like, Soho works office space. I'm getting the itch to go to Bali and shit to mix it up. But I don't know if I'm just running away from, like, myself by doing that. But, yeah, usually when I start to feel a bit like, stagnated and lost the excitement in the process of building, usually I need to, like, change my environment, just mix it up for a while. Whether that's go away to Bali Marbella, which I'm going to next week. But yeah, I don't know if people can relate to that because I. I don't know if that's something I should be doing. Is that. Is that a normal tendency? I've found historically, I've always kind of run away from facing maybe like, my own mind a little bit. Like, I run away to a fucking hot country or somewhere else to. To live and work there. And maybe that's distracting myself from like, I don't know, a side of my life that I need to probably work out. And that's. How do I feel fulfilled throughout the process rather than just maybe at the peaks of the process. I don't know. I don't know where I'm going with this. I've written no notes, but in the interest of honesty, I'm just kind of saying what's on my mind. So, yeah, I felt, like, pretty uninspired. In summary, yeah, a lot going on with the business. I'm trying to figure out how to maybe, like I said, enjoy the mundane parts of the process more because, you know, that is where. That is what moves the needle. I think my character is. I'm always chasing, like, movie scene moments in life. And I know that sounds so cliche and cringe and whatever, but I really find it quite difficult to just be in a, like a boring place and do boring work. And I know that sounds insane, but I always feel like I need to have a pink light on. I need to have certain, like, nostalgic, romantic movie kind of music playing to make me feel something. And yeah, I find often, like the process of just being in the trenches very, very plain. And yeah, I just thought I'm always. My character is just chasing moments in life that feel like fucking films and shit. And obviously by definition, you can't have that all the time. But that's just the way my mind works. I Mean, that's why I'm, like, inspired to try and make, like, you know, brand movies and stuff, which aren't necessarily gonna move the needle forward in terms of sales, really, but I still feel like they have a valid place because that's like, an art form, and that's like, a beautiful part of building the brand. And without that, it's almost like, why would I want to do it? Because it's not all about money. It's not all about moving the needle forward. I know primarily as a business owner, it has to be, and I do think that way, but maybe I'm just over. Over romanticizing life. And I probably always have, and it probably leaves me feeling disappointed a lot of the times, you know, with normality and just, like, life as it is, because I don't know where I'm going with this, but there's nothing wrong with my life at all. I'm, you know, I'm very privileged, fortunate. Not lucky, but fortunate to be doing what I'm doing. I don't know. I've said it before. Like, pressure is a privilege. Like, it's a. It's a privilege to be in the trenches, all this sort of stuff, and building my own thing. So I know how many people would love the opportunity to do it. But, yeah, I don't know. I just struggle with the mundaneness sometimes of it. And I like to. I need to be, like, deeply stimulated, and sometimes I don't feel like I am doing, like, a lot of the more mundane stuff and where I need to switch up my environment, maybe get around the team in person more, which is obviously the dilemma of, like, online stuff or if I just need to fucking get a therapist and figure this out for myself. But, yeah, I think it's a very lonely process building something. And often maybe I'm looking for, you know, new team members to come in, new places to go, like, new products to come in to excite me and kind of get that next, like, entrepreneurial hit of, like, dopamine. But you can't always have that. So, yeah, I don't know where the fuck I'm going with this, but I just think my character is very all or nothing. I'm very up and down, and the highs can be incredible, and I feel very inspired. And I, you know, I come up with some of my best ideas in, like, brief moments. But then the lows for me are just kind of really know where they stem from. But when I just face, like, the reality of I need to just grind and do what I need to do for, you know, the next 10 hours today, for the next five days this week, six days this week, for the next six months this year to get to that next level. And it's kind of a scary realization when you realize that even when you're making progress, the second you've hit that goal, whether that's a revenue goal, you know, subscriber goal, like cash in the bank goal, whatever the fuck it is, a physique goal, a running goal, you always need the next goal to get that hit. And it's kind of a never ending cycle. And as you get better at things, obviously like things get exponentially harder to reach that next level. For example, when I started running like you know, going from 50 minute 10k to a 35 and a half minute 10k, which I did like a month ago, like that's crazy. But then if I wanted to get like a 34 minute 10k, that's probably like another year of training to reach that next, like fuck, I've leveled up again. So yeah, I mean that's the entrepreneurial demon I suppose is that you always, you're always chasing that next thing. And when you realize that the next maybe like monetary thing or material thing doesn't fulfill you, then it's like, what does? And I guess I'm trying to figure that out and I think maybe just learning to appreciate the process, appreciate the people around me in the process is important. And that's why I love doing the pod, because I get to meet great people and shit. And I think that's one of the most important and valuable things in life. Anyway, where the fuck am I going with this? Very much in my style. That's nine minutes of rambling. But yeah, I mean that's what I wanted to speak about briefly. I felt fucking uninspired. And there we go. I don't know if that made any sense to anyone, but in the interest of actually getting people to watch the video, I'm going to show you my ad accounts. Because so many people ask me about that, I'm going to dive that deep into them. I don't run any of them. As I mentioned, I'll start sharing my screen now. Yeah, I'm going to show you my Facebook ad account, my TikTok ad account and my Google Ad account. So brief overview, they're the three main channels. Long story short, Facebook, Instagram has been, you know, the biggest by far. Been spending the Most Instagram, sorry, TikTok and Google. TikTok's only just been unbanned, which I'll show you in a second. And Google, we've had merchants that are banned since the start. So as you can see the business has been running like four months now. Four months and four days or something. Spent 168 grand on Facebook. Yeah, I mean I'm not gonna dive into that much shit but this column is like unicorn because we have this like special elevar tracking thing which is like triple. Well I think, I mean again I'd barely even look in these accounts to be honest. So yeah, like roas and shit. Obviously there's, there's some good stuff, there's some less good stuff. A lot of stuff has been turned on and off. Yeah, spent 168 grand since we started on Facebook. What have I spent on fucking see this screen? I've got camera in the way. What I've spent last 30 days trailing 30 days. I've spent 58k. Yeah, didn't have enough creative but in the past few days I started to ramp that up quite a bit. But yeah, I mean as you can see 168k. I mean it's probably interesting. I can click clickbait the fuck out this video TikTok creative. Completely different story. This is a new ad account actually we spent it probably about the same right at the start. So all spent four grand since the 5th of August done about attribution. So but yeah, this is oh, account credit. We've got 50 grand credit now. Where did that come from? Yeah, spending all basically at the minute. Haven't really nailed Tick tock. We've not had much time to test with it because we only just got the account back and every time it keeps starting to spend more, there's like getting banned and so on. So yeah, we spent four grand on there. So what's that? 172 total including Facebook. Google again, big fucking one. Back in the neon beach days I spent like 1.5 million in a year on Google. We've only spent call it round up to 17k, you know, decent ROAS like four hours but we've not had shopping so this is no merchants and they without shopping. So it's basically just search terms. So yeah, 172 plus 17k. Spent like 180k on ads basically in the first four months. And yeah, over a 2x blended ROAS in that period terms of the revenue we've done. But yeah, I don't know why I'm showing you this. I might regret showing you this. I'm not going to too much detail Is there some shit I should blur on here? I have no idea. Someone gonna see like my ad account name and fucking hack it. But yeah, 17k thereabouts on Google, four count, tick tock, fuck all and then the big daddy 168k on Facebook. So yeah, I mean that's what, that's. That's what we've been spending. We did just have 10,000 units of rainbow dust land yesterday. Gone over 10,000 coming because that's another thing. I've actually been very limited on stock even up to now. Gone over 10k units landing in about 2 weeks time. I have a bunch of these things. These are pretty sick like gradient metal mugs come in so I can start building out like an offering a bit more like mud water or everyday dose. Because right now let me just go on the website. I mean you can all see this yourself anyway. Is there loads of shit on my screen I should be hiding? Probably my literally regret this. For me this is slow but yeah obviously right now I haven't really tested much in terms of like offers. It's just been like you can subscribe to the product whereas I really want to build out like test funnels for like an offer. Like for example you get a cup, a sample sachet, like travel packs, whatever you can word it as you know first month, like 30 quid which rolls into a subscription. Like test that versus just the normal setup right now which is obviously just buy it, subscribe or three months. So yeah a bunch of stuff I want to test there. I may well live to regret this fucking sharing the screen. But yeah, I thought I'd show you the ad accounts briefly. As you can probably tell from this video, I'm actually pretty hungover today. So went out last night, it was a fucking flat party and he stopped drinking with six weeks out of the marathon. And yeah that's what's going on. I'm trying to like jig myself back into year and get inspired again to like come up with some sick ideas and fucking change the world but sometimes it doesn't, doesn't go that way but I think these are the times obviously just got grind through it and get shit done and yeah but did some cool pods recently. That's been good. I'm glad I'm back back on the consistent trailer with that Lucy who's been managing that is probably watching this some booking some great guests. So I appreciate that. And yeah, what else do I want to speak about? Probably not much. I rambled enough. This is one of those episodes in three years time, hopefully will be really like insightful and be like a classic or not. But yeah, anyway. Just a pretty boring week in the life of someone. Someone in the trenches, I guess. But I think there's. There is beauty in the simple things and that's what I'm trying to figure out and find. And yeah, fuck it. Space goes to the moon. See you the next episode. Cheers for watching. Peace. Oh yeah, also like, actually, let me know you want to see. And I know I've said this a billion times and I for the first time I've shown you some shit on screen, but let me know there's anything else that we might be particularly interesting to go into. Obviously, within reason I'm not going to share like the actual P L and like bank accounts and shit before people start coming for that sort of stuff. But let me know you want to see. I have to go and run like four hours this weekend because I didn't train enough this week. But sticking to the plan and getting it done. Catch you in the next episode. Thanks for watching. Bye. Peace.
