AI News: Get Ready, The World is About to Change

Matt Wolfe covers AI developments from SXSW, including Figure's humanoid robot working with OpenAI's GPT, a leaked version of GPT-4.5 with a 256,000-token context window, and OpenAI's board affirming Sam Altman. Attendees expressed skepticism about AI despite the breakthroughs.

I just got back in from south by Southwest, and despite the fact that AI was everywhere at this event, I mean, AI companies were sponsoring it. AI was talked about in almost like all of the panels and presentations all over the place. The concept of AI wasn't really received very well by a lot of the attendees. They actually put together this reel that was fairly optimistic about AI and, well, this is how the crowd responded to it. Artificial intelligence.
This was actually from a video posted by Marcelo here on X, who's doing his part to stop the rise of AI by, you know, booing one presentation at a time about AI. But to be fair to these guys, the video they showed off had some pretty cringy lines. You know, your business is going to be disrupted and you need to stop resisting and start learning. Quite honestly, telling people to get on board and not worry about it is probably not the best approach. Now, the major players that are sort of controlling the direction of AI right now are companies like Google, like Microsoft, as well as from people like Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk, two people that are very strongly disliked by a lot of people in this world. So I do to some degree kind of understand when people start booing the sentiment that, well, AI is here, so just get on board and shut up. Right? Because, yes, AI is here, yes, that genie is not going back in the bottle. I think the people are just more concerned about who's in control of the AI. I think that's where the huge worry is. But I'm not going to go too deep in the weeds on this topic here because there was a lot of really, really cool, interesting AI news that happened this week. I'm here to be excited and optimistic about the future. And pointing out that a lot of people are still scared of AI is probably not any news to you. So let's move on to the real big stor this week, starting with Figure. So Figure is the company that is behind this humanoid robot, and they just partnered with OpenAI to put GPT4 inside of this robot, essentially giving the robot vision capabilities, speaking capabilities, hearing capabilities, and pretty much everything, you know, that you can do with tools like chat GPT right now. And there's really nothing that I could say to explain it that their demo video won't do better. So just check this out.
Hey, Figure one, what do you see right now?
I see a red apple on a plate in the center of the table, a drying rack with cups and a plate, and you standing nearby with your hand on the table.
Great. Can I have something to eat?
Sure thing.
Great. Can you explain why you did what you just did while you pick up.
This trash on it? So I gave you the apple because it's the only edible item I could provide you with from the table.
Based on the scene right now, where do you think the dishes in front of you go next?
The dishes on the table, like that plate and cup, are likely to go into the drying rack next.
Great. Can you put them there?
Of course.
All right. So how do you think you did?
I think I did pretty well. The apple found its new owner, the trash is gone, and the tableware is right where it belongs.
So I did speed up the gaps. So when a question was asked, there was some latency. So it wasn't a real time conversation where he asked the question and then there was an immediate response. There was a gap. But I wanted to keep the pace of this video going, so I sped up that gap a little bit. But in this video, we can see a robot that can have a conversation. It could hear, it could speak, it could see what's in front of it, used its own logic when he asked for food that there was only one item that was food in front of it and handed it to the man. It was able to do multiple things at once, like pick up trash while explaining why he handed him the apple. And he was even able to put the cup and dishes away without, you know, breaking them or squeezing too hard. Now, I've seen a lot of other YouTube videos that claim that this is AGI in a robot. Probably not. I don't want to sound too salty, but I think a lot of other YouTubers have discovered that if they throw the letters AGI in the title of a YouTube video, the video gets a lot more views. But this isn't really AGI. This is doing everything GPT4 can do, likely, with all the limitations that GPT4 also has. It's just in a robot form, and they gave the robot the ability to actually take the actions that are suggested. But it's still using GPT4 under the hood. So if we can agree that GPT4 isn't AGI, well, then the figure 1 robot with GPT4 in it is also not AGI. Sorry, while we're on the topic of OpenAI, there was a possible leak of GPT 4.5. I mean, we've already had a possible leak of GPT 4.5. Like, months ago, back when ChatGPT itself was saying it was using GPT4.5 Turbo. Now people are claiming that there was this leak on Google, where Google indexed the announcement of GPT4.5. Here's a screenshot from DuckDuckGo that shows OpenAI.com blog GPT4.5 Turbo. So it looks like it was a blog post that was maybe published and indexed and then unpublished, or it was never published but somehow got indexed. I don't know. But if you read the description, it says OpenAI announces GPT4.5 Turbo, a new model that surpasses GPT4 Turbo in speed, accuracy and scalability. Learn how GPT 4.5 Turbo can generate natural language or code with a 256,000 context window and a knowledge cutoff of June 2024. Now, we don't know when GPT4.5 is going to come out. This is just a possible leak that may not actually be based in any sort of reality. People were speculating that it would come out on Thursday. Well, spoiler, I record these videos on Thursdays to publish them on Friday. It didn't come out today. But what we can gather from that one screenshot there is that it's going to have a 256,000 token context window, which is double what we get from GPT4 Turbo right now, and that it'll have a cutoff date of June 2024. Well, seeing as we're not in June 2024 yet, my guess is probably not coming out until at least June. But we'll see. Again, this is just some random screenshots that popped up on both DuckDuckGo and Google. This screenshot here is showing it on DuckDuckGo, but Matt Schumer here also shows a screenshot straight out of Google. So Google seemed to have indexed it as well. And since we're talking about OpenAI, remember back in November when Sam Altman was briefly fired, kicked off the board, hired by Microsoft, everybody at OpenAI basically threatened to quit. Sam Altman was brought back on, they built a new board. All of that kind of stuff happened. Well, it seems like that storyline has kind of finally conclud included its arc. While this special committee that was created reviewed more than 30,000 documents, conducted dozens of interviews and evaluated various corporate actions, they concluded that the prior board's decision did not arise out of concerns regarding product safety or security, the pace of development, OpenAI's finances, or its statements to investors, customers or business partners, Instead it was a consequence of a breakdown in the relationship and loss of trust between prior board and Mr. Altman. They found that the prior board implemented its decision on an abridged timeframe without advanced notice to key stakeholders and without a full inquiry of an opportunity for Mr. Altman to address the prior board's concerns. They found that the prior board acted within its broad discretion to terminate Mr. Altman, but also found that his conduct did not mandate removal. The special committee expressed its full confidence in Mr. Altman and Mr. Brockman's ongoing leadership of OpenAI, and on the same day, OpenAI also announced new members to the Board of directors, including Dr. Sue Desmond Hellman, who is the former CEO of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Nicole Seligman, the former executive vice president and general counsel at Sony Corporation and Fiji Simo, the.
