GitHub showed a new Copilot app at Microsoft Build that lets you pick any AI model from any provider, not just OpenAI's. The catch: it needs an active Copilot subscription, and GitHub paused new sign-ups with no word on when they'll reopen.

During Microsoft Build, they also showed off a new GitHub Copilot app, which I was actually pretty excited about it. There's one major difference about this new GitHub app that you don't get in Codex, and that's the option to choose whatever model you want from any model provider that's out there. So obviously when using OpenAI's Codex, you're gonna use one of the OpenAI models. When using this new GitHub Copilot app, you get seemingly like the same experience that you get with Codex, but the ability to pick whatever the current state-of-the-art, fastest, cheapest model is. And this was like the first thing I wanted to play with because this excited me the most. Except there's one problem. It says you need an active GitHub Copilot subscription to use the app. Okay, cool, I'll sign up for that because I want the Codex experience. I click over to sign up and, well, for some reason, new plan signups are temporarily paused as we ensure a high-quality experience. The one thing I wanted to play with the most that I thought we would have access to is for some reason not available. Who knows though, by the time this video is live and you're seeing this, it might be available to sign up.
