Matt Wolfe compares Anthropic and OpenAI by the numbers: Anthropic's $965 billion valuation beats OpenAI's $852 billion, and Anthropic wins 70% of enterprise contracts in banking and law. But ChatGPT has 905 million weekly users versus Claude's undisclosed count, and OpenAI still dominates consumer markets. Neither company has clearly won yet.

So a lot of people are saying Anthropic just won the AI war because they filed for a higher valuation than OpenAI. And I want to push back on that a little because I think calling it a clear winner is kind of missing what is actually interesting about this story. So yes, Anthropic filed at $965 billion and OpenAI filed at a measly $852 billion in the same week. So on paper, Anthropic is valued higher right now and the business fundamentals do back that up to some extent. Anthropic is generating around $30 billion in annualized revenue compared to OpenAI's $25 billion. They have a 70% win rate against OpenAI when competing for new enterprise customers. Banks, law firms, healthcare companies, the clients who pay serious money and sign long-form contracts are going with Anthropic. And Anthropic is projected to be profitable by 2028, while OpenAI doesn't expect to be positive cash flow until 2030. I'm not sure how much this factors into the valuation, but the Pope literally wrote an encyclical about AI on AI safety a few weeks ago, and Anthropic's co-founder Chris Olah was his personal guest to the reading of it. Almost like an endorsement from God for Anthropic's safety measures. So Claude is technically the first AI to receive papal acknowledgement. I do not know what that does for the stock price, but I feel like it probably doesn't hurt. But here's where the clear winner framing falls apart. ChatGPT has 905 million weekly active users. Claude's numbers have not even been publicly disclosed. OpenAI still dominates the consumer market a margin that is honestly really hard to argue with. And I've been using both tools almost every day for my newsletter and YouTube channel for years. And what I keep noticing is that Claude wins on precision and nuance while ChatGPT wins on convenience and brand recognition. So the market is betting that enterprise revenue compounds faster than consumer user growth, and that might turn out to be true, but calling either one the clear winner right now is probably a little premature. Drop that AI claim you've been seeing going around and are not sure whether or not to believe it down in the comments, and I'll try to debunk it in the next one.
