A short YouTube monologue by Matt Wolfe discussing the implications if open-source AI does not persist. Wolfe contrasts open-source and closed-source models, draws an analogy to the crypto sector's regulatory uncertainty, and argues that regulation may disproportionately empower bad actors and harm smaller developers.

If you don't have open source AI, then yeah, you will end up with like one or two companies that controls all the technologies. A lot of where my head's at kind of comes from, like, the crypto space, right where there's been looming regulations forever. But a lot of the regulations never end up happening. So a lot of the companies that are trying to build, they're like, am I going to build something that's going to end up getting regulated out of existence? So, like, a lot of people and companies in that crypto space are like, just tell us the damn regulations so we know what bumpers to stick with it. And we're not in this limbo. But when we're like talking about AI, I feel like it's a different story because it's like you do have the open source, you do have the closed source, you do have the companies that, you know, have a better foothold within governments than the little guys. You do have all these other nuances that really muddy the waters. And also I feel like regulation is just going to make it easier for the bad actors to be the bad actors while the people they're trying to do right lose abilities essential.
