This Company Will Buy Your AI Training Data

Verb is a startup that pays you for your personal data. You install tracking software, pick which data to share (browsing, shopping, ChatGPT chats), block companies you don't want, and set your own price. Matt Wolfe calls it a private version of universal basic income.

AI companies really, really want your data so much that they're actually now willing to pay you directly for it. So I recently came across this company called Verb that's actually trying to help you get paid for the data these companies want from you. And no, this is not sponsored by them. I just thought it was an interesting concept. It works by you allowing them to install a tracking script on your phone. Then you decide which data you feel comfortable actually sharing. This could be things like browsing activity, shopping habits, and data export from things like Instagram or TikTok or ChatGPT. And you can turn off specific categories and block companies you don't want having your data and even set your own price for it all. Verb also claims to exclude sensitive info like passwords and text messages and health data. So I've had this theory that I've talked about a few times in some of my long-form videos where I actually think things like this are more likely to get people paid in the near future than something like a universal basic income. These companies really, really want your data, and people are actually becoming more and more focused on making sure companies can't get your data. So companies' last resort will just be straight up paying you for that data so they can train models and better target It could end up being similar to something like UBI, but the companies are paying it out to you instead of the government. Now, is this a good thing? I don't totally know how I feel about this yet. There's some pretty obvious massive privacy trade-offs here, but I do think there are plenty of people out there that are willing to trade privacy for a paycheck. So I do have a feeling we're going to see a lot of companies trying this in the near future. I'm curious, would you sell your data to big tech if the price was right?
