Why Zuck Open Sourcing Llama is Genius

For somebody like Zuck, open sourcing Llama is a super strategically valuable and spot on kind of effort. I don't think he's hyping it. He's genuinely investing in like very real fundamental language model multimodal research. And that has allowed, I think, Meta to retain world class research talent that they wouldn't have been able to otherwise. They were like bleeding research talent just a few years ago and they have really turned it around. On the other hand, I would give Google and DeepMind a scorecard of like C minus on that because they had all the pieces right. They then have tried to switch the culture from being largely incremental to being like transformative and putting out products like, you know, Gemini. But obviously, as we've seen, they really get butchered in post training.
