Would You Rather Have Drugs or a House?

Max Harding tells the story of a childhood friend who chose drugs over stability, then uses an allegory about a demon seeking redemption to explore how society traps people in cycles of harm. He argues that isolation and judgment prevent change, while listening and second chances can break the pattern.
Would you rather have drugs or a house? Well, my childhood friend chose drugs. The guy I knew growing up, now sleeping behind a grocery store slurping stolen cough syrup. I feel so deeply because of how people are treating him. So I created this story for you, for what cannot be said with words.
How does a demon become an angel when every angel refuses to speak to him? The demon wanted to change, but everyone who encouraged kindness refused to speak to him, and everyone who welcomed him rewarded his darkness. He wanted to be good, but being alone hurt more. So he became what everyone expected.
We were right! We were right! We were right! We were right!
Everybody but one.
This poem represents how in society, when people have negative behaviors, they surround themselves with people with similar behaviors. And validate each other for them. And this creates a negative feedback loop. And it goes for the same for people that are quote-unquote good or more moral. Surrounding themselves with people that they believe are quote-unquote good or more moral, it creates another self-feedback loop. And this prevents people from actually changing. If there is that one devil that wants to become an angel and no one Even though he sees the light within him, he can become trapped due to his own isolation. This shows the true deep importance that we should always be listening and experiencing new people's perspectives. Whether we think they are bad or good, one person can completely change our comprehension on reality. If we're always open to giving people a second chance and helping them, actual change can happen.
