Everything I designed in 2017

A designer walks through every project they completed in 2017: apps, collaborations, conference talks, and side work. It's a personal recap of what shipped that year and what's coming next.
All right, it's January 2, 2018 and what a great time to make a video. I'm just gonna do a recap of 2017. I've got lots of notes. In January, I decided to start making more videos. This is my very first video of 2017. I was also finishing up a project called My Monero. I posted a lot of those to dribble and. And I think I even made a video recap of that. That was a fun project. I really love the way those designs turned out. Another project that I created was one called Case Basis where it was like a lawyer app. It was actually for a personal injury law firm and they were creating a white label app that would allow them and whoever they licensed the app to, to kind of use that as almost like a messaging app for their clients where they can follow up on treatments and they can, you know, the patient can. Or the client can say they went to the doctor. Just kind of the same process happens for every personal injury law case. Not the most glamorous work in the world, but I had a great time. The client was awesome. It's always fun to learn about a new industry and to come up with a new design, you know, to solve a problem for an industry that can really use it is always a fun thing for me. Last year I did a project with Dan Maul, Brad Frost and Josh Clark, and also Ian Frost. We all collaborated and did a big giant design system for ExxonMobil. And so later the following year, one of the guys reached back out to me from Exxon and asked if I could design this really big icon set for their design system. I want to say it was like 900 icons. I know that's not necessarily big in terms of, you know, a lot of times you'll see like thousand two thousand, five thousand, sometimes even ten thousand icon sets. But in terms of a custom icon project, and I was shooting or I was designing everything at three different sizes, it was a big project. So that was really fun. That was a good change of pace. And that was also when I had released the intro to icon Intro to icons.com, the free icon design course, right around the same time. Because I was all into icons, there's a. I also did some 12stone iPhone app updates. 12stone is a large church in Atlanta. I did their iPhone app the year before and I did some updates for them. This spring I did a fun prototyping talk at Atlanta web design group awdg. Thank you very much. I feel like this is getting boring. Alright, maybe we'll take a little trip to the. To the sound room over here. Okay. So in April and May of last year, I started working on 12 stone calm. Like a really big redesign. This was. They have a lot of content, a ton of pages. Oh, I flew to San Francisco, did an Adobe make it interview. That was a lot of fun. Here we are. Matt D. Smith. Good to see you here, buddy. Good to see you, Paul. I've actually. I'll put links to everything down below if you're interested in checking all that out. Went to Craft and Commerce, which is an event, a conference in Boise, Idaho. Kind of kicked off by Nathan Barry and his company ConvertKit. That was a ton of fun. I got to see Seth Godin talk and met a lot of cool people there. So it was nice to get out of the tech industry and into the kind of blogging, writing, podcasting, marketing world just to hear different people's perspectives. And it was really, really good. I actually vlogged that entire trip, but I never edited the video because I got slack. I don't know, it just didn't happen. About August or so, I started working with a startup out of New York called Late Shift. Kind of met with them, kicked things off. They eventually changed their name to Steady. Started off as a website, responsive website. Then it was going to be mobile website only, and then we changed it into an iPhone app. And then we said, okay, we're going to do iPhone and Android. So it was kind of. It evolved. I did all the branding for that and did all the interface design for the iOS app and the Android app. So that was a lot of fun. They're currently building their internal team, so I kind of did a big handoff at the end of the year. Oh, I released Flow Kit. Drawing lots of lines inside a sketch is a big PA Flow Kit and actually used a ton of the flokit pieces on Steady when I was designing it. And finally I started another project called Cinesampler, basically where you can sample live studio recorded instruments like harps. And it's like another kind of odd, random design project. But I kind of really love these little projects. And so if you have. If you have questions, let me know down below. Let me know what you want to see more of this year. And, man, thank you for watching. All right, 2018, let me know what you want to see and we'll show it to you. Sam.
