Figma is adding AI image-editing tools directly into the app: background removal, object erasing, element isolation, and image expansion via text prompts. Matt D. Smith says these built-in features make common bitmap edits faster than jumping to Photoshop or Affinity.

Figma has historically been vector only, and there wasn't a lot you could do with images other than maybe change their blend mode. Maybe you added a gradient on top of it. And if you wanted to change an image, you had to do it in Photoshop or Affinity Designer or any other random bitmap image editing tools. And now we have Mid journey, we have Gemini 3, we have Nano Banana Pro, powered by AI that make it a lot more accessible. And sometimes it can be overwhelming to use any of these AI image editing tools. So that's why I'm really excited to see Figma just baking it right into the tool that we as designers are using all the time already. They've already had like remove background from images and now they're kind of expanding this to erasing something from an image and isolating an object. You can see in this one, they are pulling out someone's feet out of the photo, resizing it. The shadows are probably staying too small in this particular video, but. But you can kind of get an idea of what they're doing. It's kind of nice to be able to do this right inside of Figma and have a reliable, repeatable framework to do that. Expand image has already been possible if you wanted to edit an image with a prompt, but they've probably baked in a system prompt to these click commands. So it just makes these little tools quicker and easier. And so I think this will be really powerful. And I like the fact that they're just adding these smaller updates.
