3 Ways Narcissists Test Their Next Target

Narcissists use three specific tests to decide if you're someone that they can control. The key isn't just spotting these tests, it's knowing how to fail them on purpose so that narcissists get the clear message that you're not a good target. I've spent the last 20 years researching self worth and narcissistic relationships. As a coach, author and survivor myself, I teach practical systems to help empower you. In this video, I'll break down the three subtle tests narcissists use to find their targets. Share real life examples of how these tests play out, and at the end, I'll share one simple tool you can use to fail their target test in any situation. Have you ever felt like someone was studying you to figure out how much they could take from you? That's exactly what narcissists do. They're constantly hunting for supply, your time, attention and energy. For them, supply isn't just a want, it's a need, because their identity relies on external reinforcement. So before they commit to someone as their next source, they test the waters to see how easily you can be manipulated and how likely you are to meet their needs. These tests are subtle and they're designed to spot the most vulnerable. And chances are you've already encountered them without even realizing it. Most people fail these tests, but with the right awareness and tools, you can be one of the rare few, one of the 10% who outsmart them every time. Narcissistic relationships follow a predictable cycle. Idealization, devaluation, and discard. The idealization phase is where it all begins and where you're going to see test number one, the idealization test. During this stage, the narcissist floods you with attention, admiration, or emotional intensity that feels larger than life. It seems like they're completely captivated by you, but their goal isn't connection. It's to see whether you're the kind of person who's going to meet their needs. At its core, the idealization test is the narcissist asking one question. Will you be who I want you to be? They're not interested in seeing you for who you truly are. Instead, they're testing whether you'll fit the role that they've imagined for you. The admirer, the supporter, or the caregiver that they believe they need. How the idealization test looks depends on the type of narcissist you're dealing with. A grandiose narcissist will often use flattery and charm and lift you onto a pedestal. They'll say things like, I've never met anyone so amazing. And the intensity of their praise feels intoxicating, but it's not genuine. What they're really testing is whether you're susceptible to flattery and whether you're willing to lower your guard. Will you bask in their attention and start relying on their validation? If you do, they see you as a reliable source of ego boosting supply. For a covert narcissist, idealization takes a different form. Instead of the over the top praise, the they might flood you with compassion, vulnerability or self pity. They might say something like, you're the only person who understands me. And here the test is about gauging whether you're going to step into the caregiver role that they want. Are you willing to prioritize their emotional needs above your own? And if you do, they know they've found someone who they can rely on to provide endless support and attention. In both cases, this phase feels emotionally powerful because it lowers your defenses. When someone flatters you excessively or opens up to you in a way that feels deeply personal, it's natural to trust them. But with a narcissist, this is a tactic to test whether you're a good target. By the way, if you're wondering how to assess the level of risk you're dealing with, I've created a free narcissist protection checklist to help, and it's in the description below. The next test is the shared fantasy test, and it also begins almost immediately and often overlaps with the idealization test, where the first test checks to see if you will be who they want you to be. This second test, the shared fantasy test, is their way of asking, will we be who I want us to be? As they flood you with attention and admiration, they're also weaving a fantasy, an illusion of the perfect partnership or connection or friendship or future. This fantasy is crafted to hook you emotionally and to make you invest in the relationship. This test has two layers. First, the narcissist is testing whether you'll allow them to play a role in your fantasy. They pick up on your hopes, dreams and values, then mirror them back to you. Like maybe you've always wanted a soulmate who truly understands you. The narcissist steps into this role effortlessly, saying things like, I've never felt this way before. They're seeing if you're going to believe that they're the answer to everything you've been searching for. At the same time, they're testing whether you'll play the role in their fantasy for grandiose narcissists, this often means becoming the adoring sidekick who feeds their ego and helps them feel larger than life. They'll talk about shared success or a glamorous future, saying things like, we're going to be unstoppable together. Watching to see if you'll mirror their enthusiasm. For a covert narcissist, the role they want is different. They're looking for a caregiver who will prioritize their needs above your own. They might say, I've never had anyone like you in my life. Testing whether you'll offer not just emotional support, but also practical or financial care. Here's where it becomes dangerous. The fantasy might feel incredible at first, but over time, it starts to take a very dark toll. What seems so exciting and fulfilling in the beginning becomes draining and unbalanced. The longer you stay in the shared fantasy, the harder it is to leave because you're constantly chasing that first high. You remember how good it felt in the beginning, and you're thinking, if I just work harder or if I could just try to fix things so we could get back to that magic. But the reality is, the fantasy was never real. It was designed to hook you, not to keep you. It's important to recognize that both the idealization test and the shared fantasy test are designed to see if you're susceptible to gaslighting. But it's not like narcissists are consciously thinking, I'm going to gaslight this person. Their behavior, though, is very deliberate. Over time, they've developed an instinct for testing whether someone will overlook inconsistencies, or if they're going to ignore red flags or trust the illusion over their own instincts. If you show a willingness to abandon reality for the story that they create, they know that you're someone they can manipulate further. The third test is the resource test, and it's all about one question. Will you give me what I want? By the time narcissists reach this test, they've already worked to hook you emotionally and draw you into their fantasy. Now they're probing to see how much of your resources, your time, attention, energy they can extract. Narcissists are masterful at testing boundaries. They don't respect them. Instead, they push against them, probing to see how firm or how flexible they are. They start by identifying your invisible fence, the line that separates what's yours from what's theirs. And then they're going to apply subtle pressure to see if you'll give in. If you're not paying attention, these tests can happen so quickly you don't even realize you've crossed the line until it's too late. They'll test your time by asking harmless seeming questions like, what are you doing this afternoon? And if your answer shows availability, like not much or just relaxing, they'll use it as an opening to push for something they want. They might say, I'm swamped with the project and I really need your input. And the test is simple. Will you shift your plans to accommodate theirs? The more easily you do, the more they see that your time is theirs to claim. To test your attention, they'll interrupt you when you're already focused on something else. Texting, talking, watching tv. They might tap your shoulder and say, I just need to ask you something real quick. Or even stand in your line of sight to get your focus. The goal is to see if you'll stop what you're doing and direct your attention to them. If you do, they learn that they can redirect your focus anytime they need supply. And finally, narcissists will test your energy by creating situations where they need you to sacrifice for them. They might act confused about something you've already explained, or they might stir up unnecessary drama, emotionally exhausting you. These tactics are designed to push you into an uncomfortable situation where it feels easier to give in than it is to enforce your boundaries. But here's the key. Narcissists know exactly where your boundary line is. They are just testing to see if you're going to uphold it. So if you don't, they see you as the perfect target, someone they can continue to exploit for their own needs. The simplest and most effective way to fail all three tests is to slow everything down when you meet someone new. Narcissists rely on speed and intensity to overwhelm your judgment and to lower your defenses. When you pump the brakes, they lose power. And I know that slowing down is easier said than done. When you're lonely, excited, or full of hope, it can feel like pulling away from something that you've been deeply craving. And I hated being told to slow things down when I was single because it felt like rejection or it felt like I was weak. But slowing down isn't about rejecting love or friendship. It's about protecting yourself long enough to see what's really going on. To fail the narcissist test and to avoid becoming their target, you must communicate a clear no to the underlying questions that they're asking. This isn't about saying words. It's about demonstrating a clear no through action. So to demonstrate no to the Will you be who I want you to be? Question. The key is to stay consistent in your routines and priorities. Don't rearrange your plans or drop what's important to you just because you met someone new and they want your attention. Keep doing the things that you love, and if they push for something that doesn't fit who you are, simply stick to what feels right for you. To demonstrate no to the Will we be who I want us to be? Question. The rule is to slow down and stay grounded in reality. Resist sharing your deepest hopes or goals too soon. Narcissists mirror your ideals to draw you in, but over time their actions will expose the truth. So don't rush into big plans or commitments and observe their consistency first. To clearly say no to the Will you give me what I want? Question. You've got to protect your boundaries with your actions. If someone interrupts you or asks for more than you're willing to give, don't immediately comply. Instead, protect your time and energy by waiting, declining or setting limits. If they repeatedly push against your boundaries, that's a red flag. When you slow things down and act in alignment with your values, you repel narcissists by demonstrating that you are not a viable target. They will move on.
