How to Understand What a Good Eyebrow Shape Is

Makeup artist Megan Vigil teaches how to map eyebrow shape using the Anastasia Golden Ratio, which locates key points from your nostril, nose tip, and iris. She uses a white base to visualize thickness before filling in, then layers Dipbrow paint and highlighter for a natural, proportional brow.

If you know me, you know that I used to be blonde and I would bleach my eyebrows, and I love that look. I have a friend named Scout Dixon and she bleaches her eyebrows. She has black hair and I just think it looks so fucking cool. I want them to look real, but they look like Some type of terrier dog hair with all this product on it. Whatever, I got thick, coarse brows. So my career is teaching people how to do eyebrows and makeup, but I don't only do that. I teach professionals how to teach their clients how to do eyebrows and makeup and how to use So I'm always on the search for new avenues and new ways of speaking to advanced topics like how to see color, how to see a shape, how to get balance and proportion, and how to create it. I made the brows white so that I could really see what they are, how thick they are, their exact shape, like a stick. Stamp. And the yellow is the ideal. Like, I want this brow to do this, and to get this brow to match this, this is what I would need to do. Now let's pretend that these obscene colors were actually the correct colors and the correct intensity, because I wouldn't want to be filling my eyebrows in this dark. I would look insane. Here, there's no hair. I would have to use a product like Dipbrow, like a paint, to match the intensity of nothing and make it seamless with this type of hair right in here. Whereas the hair up here is a little softer, a little lighter. So when I go to recreate all this hair up here, it's not going to be as dark as this or intense. It's going to be as soft as this. To do it, first I use the Anastasia Golden Ratio. Center of the nostril, boom. End of the— hug the eye, boom. Center of the nose, boom. Then from the tip of the nose through the iris. Boom, son. I start in the areas that I want brows, just a little. I'm gonna get to all my points first. Now the thing is, is I've brought my arch all All the way back here. My real arch is like here. I have to support all of this new stuff, so it's got to come out from the top of this tail. And here's where you want your tails to be. If they're too in, or one's at 10 and one's at 2, they're not going to match. But if they're both, you know, at the same radius, then the points would probably meet in the middle of Now I'm going in and softening them. You can already see that I've taken off the marks, but I don't want these like pointy arches, so I'm gonna just soften them ever so gently. I don't need to be as Precise. I don't want it to be completely opaque. I, um, I just want to create this backdrop because I'm going to come in with a paint, and now I'm going to really give the intensity where I need it. And like I said, the areas where there's like no hair, I'm gonna go pretty intense. Oh, not that intense, but I don't mind that it's darker here. And now here's where I can create the detail, like the hair-like strokes, to build out that shape a little further, so gently. These are really thick. I look like somebody from Insane Clown Posse. But now I'm going to go in with a highlighter, because there's areas that in real life when I don't have any makeup on, I don't want to take off those brows that I have, but for this shape, they don't need to be there. See what I mean? You don't want this tail. I'm just gonna go in and kind of like a concealer, thin that out in there a little bit and move that tail back a little bit. Now after I've blended my highlight out, I'm still gonna take a spoolie brush and blend it into my hair a little bit, 'cause it's just too clean. And I wanna make sure that all that line is blended out. These brows are a little dark and contrasty, but they look real. They're passable. And if I had more makeup on, my hair is done, it would all kind of blend in with that level of intensity. But I hope that you learned something about seeing your ideal shape and how to fill them in. Thanks for watching.
