So I've watched siblings sue each other over businesses worth nothing because of what was never said. I've watched families fracture over a piece of jewelry worth less than a car payment. And the first category is the family was already broken before the money showed up. And this could be a tough one, but I think it's really important for us to be real here. It's the thing that nobody in the financial planning world wants to say out loud, but inheritance doesn't destroy families. Silence does. See, the money's not the problem, and it never was. What money does though, and what it does very, very good and well, is it exposes everything a family never dealt with. The unspoken expectations, the old resentments, the stories people told themselves for decades about who was loved more and who sacrificed more and who mattered more. The inheritance is just the match, and the dry wood was already there. And most families don't see it coming because they think having a will means having a plan. Now, will, it's a legal document. It's not a plan, and there's a difference. And by the end of this episode, you're gonna know exactly what that difference is. So let's talk about some of these things. Sign number 1 is nobody is actually talking. Let me ask you something that I think is, I wanna ask direct. Does your family have open, honest conversations around money? I know my family, we didn't have those conversations. And many families don't because money is taboo. I mean, are we talking about what you want to happen when you're gone? It's this combination of a financial conversation along with the conversation of what happens when you're gone. These are hard conversations, but we gotta have them about expectations, about values, about what any of it actually means. See, if your answer is, well, we're a family that avoids conflict and smiles through everything. Well, congratulations, you just described a room full of people who are very different stories that nobody has ever compared notes on. And most families don't talk about this stuff. Parents assume that kids will figure it out. They know what I would've wanted is what they say. The kids assume that they already know. And Mom always said I'd get the house. And everyone walks around with their own version of this story in their head, a version that nobody else has ever heard. See, that silence doesn't protect anyone. Now, I've been through 2, 3 estate transfers in my family alone, multiples for my clients. And it just, it does surface. And the thing is that when you let everyone else fill in the blanks with their own expectations, here's how exactly this is going to play out. Because I had clients, brothers, they were running their father's business and dad passed away. Mom, inherited the business from dad, which made complete sense, and the brothers just kept running it. But then mom ended up having this difficult relationship with her sons. And so when mom passed away, mom's interest in the business, she decided to pass to the daughter. Here's the problem. The daughter wasn't running the business. The brothers were. They had built it, they had managed it, they held the client relations, they kept the whole thing alive. And when they found out What happened? They literally walked. They stepped away. They took every customer relationship with them that they had built and they started fresh elsewhere. See, the business didn't get divided. It literally got hollowed out. See, the asset the sister thought she was inheriting was already seized by the brothers. It really didn't exist. Not because of greed, not because anyone wanted to hurt her, but because the decisions were made in silence and nobody understood the full picture until it was too late. The inheritance didn't destroy that family. The silence did. Years of silence finally made visible. The cracks become real. This doesn't only happen in business families. I've seen this with a family home. I've seen it with literally a piece of jewelry. I've seen it with a watch worth less than a month's rent became a 2-year family war because nobody said anything while mom was alive. See, when your family can't talk about money while everyone's alive, Money will talk very loudly after someone's gone. And trust me, that conversation's not gonna go the way you're picturing it. All right? That leads me to sign number 2, the family's already keeping score. This one's a subtle one. It doesn't look like an inheritance problem at all until it does. If you ask yourself honestly, do your kids already have a running tally? Who sacrificed more? Who was there more in the last days? Who helped when things got hard? Who showed up when a parent got sick? Who was always the favorite? Even if nobody ever said it out loud. If your family has a group text where 3 or 4 of the siblings don't actually respond to each other, I'm already worried about it. See, that's not a family group text. That is a silent verdict if you're not careful. And here's what happens when an inheritance arrives in a family where the score has been quietly kept for decades. Every dollar becomes symbolic, more than the dollar. Suddenly equal doesn't feel fair and fair doesn't feel equal. The fight stops being about what they're receiving and starts being about what it actually means. And what does it say about who mattered, who was valued, and who did the work and who didn't? So the money isn't creating those grievances, it's just giving them a number. And I've watched siblings who hadn't spoken in years become the most highly motivated communicators on the planet. The moment a will was read. Remarkable. What's at stake when, when the final score gets posted? The relationship was already strained. The money just made it official. And no document, no matter how carefully drafted, can fix the relationship that was broken long before anyone called an estate attorney. This is why the conversation has to start now, not at the reading of the will, but now. See, signs 1 and 2 are about what was already in the room before the money arrived. Signs 3 and 4, though, are about something different. They're about the planning decisions that feel completely responsible, completely reasonable, but at the same time, they blow everything up. And this next one is probably going to sting a little. So let's look at the planning mistakes that feel like smart decisions. Most families think they've handled it. They have their will in place. They put a trust in place. Everything's divided cleanly. The attorney signed off. Everyone feels good. And some of them have quietly planted a landmine. And have no idea. Sign number 3, you're confusing equal with fair. I'm an identical twin. Every birthday growing up, my mother, she believed that we had to get the same thing. So what did she do? She would buy the same thing, like a tracksuit, you know, an athletic suit. She would buy him blue and get me green. Just the same category, different color. It had to be the same thing. I, you know, next year, It changed, it was red and brown. I'm still not sure what I did to deserve the brown jogging suit that year, but whatever it is, apparently it was serious. So she meant well. She absolutely meant well. And she was being equal. Nobody could complain that one got more than the other. But equal and fair are not the same thing. And when it comes to inheritance, confusing the two can be one of the most destructive decisions a family can make. Go back to the business story that I told you. If that mother had divided the business equally between the 3 kids, that would've looked like 2 brothers who ran the business, who knew every single client, every vendor, every dollar of cash flow. And suddenly they're sharing an equal ownership with a sister who had no operational role, no working knowledge of how any of it functioned, no relationships. Day 1, they're already in conflict. Equal felt clean. Fair would've asked a completely different question. Fair would've said, the brothers have built this, let them keep it. What other assets can we structure for the daughters so that everyone walks away with something that actually works for their life? Now that's a harder question 'cause it requires more thought, more conversation, more honesty, but it protects everyone. But here's the real question I think you should be asking when you're building an inheritance plan, not is Is this split equal? But does this honor what each person actually contributed, what they're actually positioned to steward, and what makes sense for who they actually are? See, that applies to businesses. It applies to properties. It applies to siblings who moved across the country to build their family, to the sibling who was there every single week taking care of dad or taking care of mom. Equal doesn't account for that. Fairness does. They're not the same. Sign number 4, one person holds all the power with no transparency. So somebody has to be the executor. Somebody needs the power of attorney. Somebody becomes the point person, the one who knows where everything is, who manages the process. And I did this for both my father and my mother because I was close to 'em. My brother was out of town, but I have good relationship with my siblings. There was no challenges, no issues there, but there could have been if it wasn't done right. But there has to be complete honesty. Not a dollar misplaced, not a decision made selfishly. But access without communication starts to look like secrecy, and secrecy breeds suspicion. And that's why, for me, I wanted to be fully transparent, put it all on the table for my siblings and the family. The most trustworthy person in the world can start looking suspicious the moment that nobody knows what they're actually doing. And that's not a character flaw. It's just how human beings fill in the silence, the blank. We go straight to the worst version of the story. See, I've watched this play out where one sibling's managing an estate entirely on their own and the others start asking questions. Not because anything's wrong though. They just start asking because they've never been brought in the process, so they don't know what was sold, what was kept, what the decisions were that were made and, and why. And the moment someone asks, wait, where did that go? Trust starts to collapse. But it's not complicated. Communicate. That's it. Proactively, consistently, overcommunicate if you have to. If you're holding that responsibility, bring the people along, show do your work. Hold the family— regular family updates. Make transparency the default, not the exception. Because suspicion, once it takes root, doesn't stop at the estate. It stops at the relationship. See, those are the planning mistakes that look responsible. What you forgot to give them. And these last 3 will really start to deepen the thing— the things that are going on, because these signs aren't about your documents. They're not about the attorney. They're not even about how you divided things up. They're about what you did or didn't do long before any of that ever happened. See, sign number 5 is your heirs were never prepared to steward what you built. Think about a high-performance vehicle, not a regular car, something built for precision, for speed, something that has real capability for speed. All right. You wouldn't just hand someone the keys if they've never been behind the wheel of anything like that before. But that's exactly what most people are doing with their estate. They spend decades building, accumulating, accumulating, acquiring, achieving, protecting, They have the discipline, they have the sacrifice, they compound, the whole thing, and they've done it right. And then they turn around and they hand someone else the keys who's never once been in the room where the decisions were made. See, when Jeremy was growing up, I would bring him into the meetings with my wealth advisors once, sometimes twice a year. That's it. He wasn't there to vote on anything. He was— wasn't there to make decisions. He was there to just be in the room, to be in the conversations, to hear the language, to understand how the questions were asked, to watch how we thought about protecting and growing to absorb those conversations over years until they became familiar. For him and I to then take it and have conversations ourselves about what it all meant. See, those meetings are some of the most valuable things I ever gave him. They didn't cost anything but time. And they literally built the foundation that no document could have built. Did the same thing with my wife when we met her. We met her as she came into the conversations and she's part of it all now. Education, communication, assimilation. That's it. You bring them in early, you let them participate in small ways. You build their capacity before you ever hand them the keys. And one of the pillars in everything I teach is called the Guard Pillar. To guard what you build, to protect the machine financially, to protect the family unit, because watching the machine that you built get torn apart, or watching the family you built get torn apart B makes the whole journey completely meaningless. See, we build what we build with an eye towards the future because it's never just for us. I think we should be thinking generationally and bring them in and start giving them the skill sets and the knowledge to steward it beyond us. That leads me to sign number 6. You're passing down assets without passing down values. This conversation most parents aren't having because they love their kids. Of course they're gonna leave what they built to their kids. What else would they do with it? But let me ask you a different question. Did you raise people who understand what they're receiving? Not the dollar amount, but the meaning, the discipline behind it, the choices it took to build it, the sacrifices. See, money doesn't create the character, it reveals it. And I'll tell you where I stand on this personally, because I think it matters and it might ruffle some feathers. But just because Jeremy is my son doesn't automatically mean everything I've built goes directly to to him. Not because I don't love him, but because I do. Because of how much I love him, I want to make sure that he has the values, the capability, the wisdom to carry it forward and keep building. Not just to receive it, not just to spend it, but to actually steward it and allow others to benefit from it. Just the way that we're doing now. See, I didn't spend 30 years building a machine so my grandchildren could buy a boat none of them know how to even sail. That's not legacy. That's a very expensive mistake. With an anchor, the goal is never to just leave the money. The goal is to leave preparedness, to leave values, to instill it in them. And yes, that can mean putting requirements in a trust. It can mean having hard conversations about expectations while everyone's still sitting at the table. It can mean disinheriting someone who's just not ready. That's not cruelty. That is love with a longer time horizon. And then sign 7, money has become a tool for control instead of a compass. Now, everything I've just said about requirements and expectations, and there's a version of that that goes completely off the rail. And I wanna be clear about that line because I've seen families where money is always weaponized. Where, "If you do this, you're out of the will," was the sentence that got used at the dinner table, where inheritance was dangled as a reward for obedience, not as a recognition of values. Where children who made life decisions, career decisions, relationship decisions, decisions based not on what they believed, but on what they were afraid to lose. That's not a legacy plan. That's a hostage situation. Here's the thing. I sat across adult children who were still navigating their lives based on what they thought their parents wanted, not outta love, but outta financial fear. That relationship was not a family. It was a transaction dressed up in holiday traditions. There's a difference between strings that protect and strings that suffocate. Values-based requirements are an act of love. They say, here's who I hope you will become. Here's what's available to you when you get there. Control-based requirements are an act of fear. They say, here's what I need from you or else. When money has been used as a lever throughout a family's history, the inheritance doesn't open a new chapter. It becomes the final chapter of a painful story. And the families who get this right, the ones where relationships survive, where assets grow, where the next generation actually honors Here's what was built. They did something different from the start. They built trust long before the money ever changed hands. Here's the thing. When my dad passed away, I got his watch. That wasn't an expensive watch. I also got a roll of quarters still wrapped in the original paper roll. He'd won it at a casino years and years before, never spent it, just kept it. Neither one of those things is going to pay a bill.
