This is a YouTube video (June 26, 2023) by Alex Auerbach discussing why only 23% of founders seek psychological or coaching support. The provided transcript excerpt contains multiple speakers arguing that founders should routinely include mental health professionals (coaches, psychiatrists) in their support teams because doing so improves decision-making, empathy, leadership, and the odds of sustainable business success.
Sa.
When I hear that gap between how many people are concerned about their own mental health and how many people are actually pursuing support strategies, guidance, coaching around their mental health, that's just unnecessary. There's absolutely no reason that all founders shouldn't have a mental health professional in their, in their back pocket as part of their support team to help ensure the sustainable success for their business and really for themselves.
If I want to make better decisions, if I want to be more empathetic, if I want to be more thoughtful as a leader, if I want to optimize our chances of success, I need to have my brain working as well as it possibly can. And a big part of that is making sure that I have a coach, a psychiatrist, like other trained professionals, who are helping me ensure that my brain is working at optimal capacity so that I can then optimize the odds of success for the company.
No one has ever achieved a level of peak performance in a vacuum. All elite athletes have coaches. Many of the best surgeons, lawyers, other performers in the world also have coaches. Right. So there's an established model for helping people achieve their full potential, but ultimately requires recognizing that you can't do it by yourself and making a conscious choice to be the best you that you can be versus trying to maximize your productivity and sort of what society tells you is the way you should establish your value.
