Supergirl Season 2 Episode 9 Supergirl Lives ' Review'

In this YouTube review, the host walks through Supergirl Season 2 Episode 9, titled “Supergirl Lives,” highlighting Kevin Smith’s directorial homage to the unmade film Superman Lives. The review opens with a recap of the opening chase, focusing on the dynamic between Supergirl and James Olsen’s Guardian persona, and the near‑death of tech‑support character Wen, which triggers his PTSD‑driven resignation. The narrative then shifts to a missing‑daughter case that leads Kara and Mon‑El to an alien doctor’s abduction operation. The duo are transported via a portal to a red‑sun planet where their powers are nullified, prompting a thematic discussion on heroism without abilities. The host details the rescue effort led by Alex, the Martian Manhunter (John), and a team of non‑powered staff, noting John’s inability to enter due to a toxic atmosphere. Key plot devices such as the “Solar Grenade” that temporarily restores Supergirl’s powers, the re‑introduction of the Dominators and an intergalactic slave‑trading ring led by Roulette, and the climactic battle are described. Production trivia is added, noting Kevin Smith’s daughter Izzy’s cameo. The reviewer speculates that Mon‑El may be the Daxamite prince, citing the alien bowing and the search for him, and reflects on pacing, noting the episode’s slower setup for future arcs. The review concludes with a call to action for viewers to like, subscribe, and follow future Supergirl reviews.

Hey guys, welcome back to the channel, and today we'll be reviewing Supergirl, um, Season 2, Episode 9, entitled Supergirl Lives. And I believe this is a nod to Kevin Smith's, uh, script Um, Superman Lives. It was a movie that was supposed to be made but it never got made. And, uh, if I'm not mistaken, um, I think it was going to be directed by Tim Burton and Nicolas Cage was going to play Superman. And you can kind of— as I saw the, uh, from the internet, I saw these different, um images of what the suit was going to look like. You can, you can tell it was kind of reminded you of that, that, um, that Batman type of body armor. You know, Superman had the muscle armor, it was like an armor suit or something like that. And it was kind of weird. I saw these images of Nicolas Cage with long hair, you know, it just looked kind of— it looked kind of strange. But anyway, the movie never got made, but In this particular Supergirl episode, Kevin Smith got to direct this, you know, this episode. And I, I watched the episode. I was pretty entertained. Um, I thought it was a pretty good, a pretty decent episode. And, um, you know, um, it was basically, uh, again, a nod to Super, you know, Superman Lives, and it was entitled Supergirl Lives. So as it opens up, you know, Supergirl is chasing down some bad guys in a van and, you know, she blasts the van with her heat vision and stopping the, you know, the bad guys. But two managed to escape and they basically escaped through an alley. But the Guardian, you know who I'm really starting to like, I like James Olsen as the Guardian. I like his suit and his style of fighting and the shield that he can create on his wrist. So he's fighting the bad guys. He's basically kind of stealing Supergirl's glory a little bit on these, you know, when they get the 911 calls, he'll be there too to try to help Supergirl and she's kind of getting a little bit, you know, a bit tired of, you know, him coming in and, you know, at the end of her, uh, you know, trying to stop the bad guys. But as the Guardian is fighting a few of the bad guys, one of the bad guys escapes as he's fighting them. So this is like the second time the bad guys are escaping. So these are some pretty good, you know, bad guys as far as getting away. So he radios Wen, and he, you know, he tells Wen, hey Wen, you know, one of the bad guys are coming your way, you know, uh, you know, do something about them, try to see if you can stop them. And so when opens the, the door to the, uh, you know, the little, uh, communication van he uses when he goes out and, you know, you know, you know, does, uh, technical support for, uh, the Guardian or backup support or whatever. And so he opens the door, seemingly knocking the bad guy out. Then when you know, steps out. And, uh, but the bad guy isn't really knocked out, so the bad guy gets up and he just really starts hammering, you know, he really just starts hammering on Wen. And, and, uh, he's about to kill Wen, you know, he, um, he takes out his gun. And, um, but right before he can kill Wen, the Guardian, you know, gets there and, you know, is able to to keep him from killing Wen. But the issue is, you know, I, I think this is the first time Wen comes this close to death. You know, he's always in the background, he's always at headquarters, you know, behind a computer, and he's always, you know, he's never really in the trenches, so to speak. You know, he's never really, you know, in, in danger to that degree. So this really, um you know, uh, cause some issues with Wynn. Uh, you know, he, he couldn't take it. He was, you know, like, I'm done, you know, this has come too close to me losing my life, I'm quitting. And, you know, him and, him and the Guardian, or James, they kind of have this falling out. And, you know, Wynn's basically quit, you know, he's not gonna risk his life, he's not gonna do that anymore. And so we move on to, uh, you know, back to, uh, CatCo. And, um, you know, basically a, a woman storms in, um, to CatCo, and, uh, she's, uh, you know, talking with Kara and the, um, I forget the guy's name, he's the, you know, the chief, the, uh you know, over the reporters, the head reporter. He, uh, this woman is, you know, she's very frantic and she's, uh, she's trying to, um, you know, she's basically saying, hey, my daughter's missing and this is not like her. She usually calls on my birthday, you know. Although they're saying it's, you know, it's not a big deal, I know something is wrong. I need you all to help me. Please help me, uh, you know, find my daughter. So she's sensing something's wrong because I'm wondering why she didn't just go to the police. But I'm, I imagine that the— she probably did, and the police maybe, you know, gave her that, you know, that brush off they always give you. Say, well, hell, you know, have they been missing for 24 hours yet? And this and that. And, uh, you know, after 24 hours we put out APB and this and that. But That mom's not having it. She knows something's wrong, so she's already going to get help. And so Kara decides to investigate, you know, as Supergirl. And, you know, she kind of, you know, encounters, uh, Mon-El. Mon-El's still doing the odd job things. I think he becomes a bartender and he doesn't know the difference between a club soda and a, you know, a vodka martini, and, you know, this and that. So, uh, he, you know, he's kind of bored. He wants to come along and help Supergirl. So they go to this place where, you know, you find out that this, um, you know, this doctor, you know, in this lab, he's doing these various experiments on, you know, on people. And, you know, and all the clues lead to him. So when Supergirl and Mon-El get there, you know, they're acting like they want to be part of his laboratory test, you know, that he uses to uh, you know, to get, you know, get people, you know, down there. And so when, when, when they arrive, they are, you know, basically he's trying to get their blood. He's trying to, you know, uh, I guess trying to examine to see if he's right for, you know, they're right for them and whatnot, you know, kind of going through this, uh, you know, basically just going through this, uh, going through the motion of like it's a real setup, you know, because this doctor, he really is, you know, kidnapping, you know, all these people. And it's not just, um this woman's daughter. It's, you know, it's been a, it's been a, uh, you know, um, this has been happening multiple times across the city where they've been abducting people and kidnapping people. So, uh, you know, of course Supergirl and Mon-El, they can't give them their blood because they're not human. So, you know, they basically go, oh, you know, it's against our religion and our gods, and they got to make up this story. And, uh, you know, this doctor, he doesn't really you know, he doesn't really, uh, he doesn't really care, uh, you know, that, uh, you know, if, you know, if they're, uh, you know, for the— it's just all, uh, he's just all making it up anyway that he really needs, you know, to take their blood and stuff like that because, you know, he really just wants to, uh, you know, abduct them too. And, uh, so basically they find out he's not a human being but he's an alien. He turns into an alien, but He can't, you know, he can't defeat Mon-El and Supergirl because of course they're superpowered too. So he decides to run and we find out where they send the abductees. It's like a gateway or portal device and it actually takes them through another, you know, to another, an entire alien planet. So this doctor, you know, he just basically, you know, he's turned into the alien, his true form, what he is. He runs through this portal, this gateway. And, uh, Supergirl goes, well, um, I'm not gonna let him get away. I gotta find out where he's taking, uh, you know, all these people he's abducted. So she's chasing him through the portal, but she tells Mon-El, go and tell my sister Alex where I'm at, you know, so in case something happens, you get help. So Supergirl runs in, and as she gets in, you know, she realizes she doesn't, you know, have any powers because this alien planet is basically orbiting a red sun, you know. And, you know, as we know, a red sun doesn't, you know, allow Supergirl, you know, to have any power. She's charged by the yellow sun. So, uh, Mon-El not being the very smart, you know, you know, he's never really been smart on the series so far, you know, we do know that. He goes in behind her to help her But as he goes in, the gateway gets closed behind them. So now basically they don't have any superpowers and nobody knows where they're at because Man-El came chased after her to, you know, and didn't go and tell, you know, her sister where they were. So as they get inside there, um, you know, they're actually trapped, uh, you know, by, you know, one of the aliens and Uh, you know, eventually they get taken captive by the, you know, the alien doctor who's abducting all these people. And so now he has everyone. He has, uh, Supergirl, Mon-El, and all the abductees, and they're all powerless. There's nothing they can do to escape. So as we cut back to, um, um, uh, Alex's— I'm sorry, Supergirl's sister Um, and she's, you know, speaking with John the Martian Manhunter. You know, they're basically, uh, they basically pretty much narrowed it down to where Supergirl, you know, was, where this laboratory was, and, uh, you know, her last, you know, whereabouts. And they find the device, they find the, the, the transporter to this, you know, uh, this other planet, and Uh, John knows about the technology, but he also knows that, uh, uh, where this, where this thing goes, or this alien race that created this thing, uh, that the red sun— they have, they orbit the red sun as well. So, you know, they're able to figure out, oh well, you know, Supergirl and Mon-El, they don't have any power, so they're helpless. So they're like, well, no problem, send John in, you know, the Martian Manhunter. He still has super powers, and he's not affected by a red sun. But unfortunately, John also, you know, explains to them, well, hey, this atmosphere is toxic to Martians, you know, some kind of silicate and oxygen something or another in their atmosphere. So I can't go in there, you know. Only thing I can, you know, we can only send a team in there. So they send a, you know, they send a team of non-powered, non-superpowered people in, you know, under Alex's command. And you know, um, you know, at this stage, uh, they never really— Wind never really goes into the field, but there's a situation where they need Wind to go because they need to understand this, this, uh, technology that teleports them back and forth just in case they can't get out of there, and how to use it to get in and exit out. But Wind's still kind of under his post-traumatic stress from the, uh you know, from the, uh, you know, the incident he had earlier with the, uh, with the burglars and, uh, you know, being attacked and, you know, with the guardian. And so, uh, when, you know, he just isn't gonna go and they have to order him, they basically have to order him to go because when it's just not, you know, when, you know, he just can't deal with it at, you know, at the moment. So they get to the Uh, they, they do find their— they do— or sorry, I cut back to Supergirl. And what's going on with Supergirl is, um, you know, they know they don't have any powers, but as they're trying to take the abductees off, Supergirl is trying to fight to protect them. And she's explaining to Mon-El that, you know, you know, part of being a superhero is not just about, you know, having superpowers. It's about your character and, you know, the fact that you fight even without superpowers. And, you know, it's a really good speech helping Mynell to understand, you know, what being a superhero is all about, you know, because Mynell at this point is— he's being the, you know, the same old Mynell of, you know, hey, we need to be avoiding trouble. If you go looking for trouble in a big universe, you're gonna find it. You know, and this and, and that and that, you know, he, he's still one L, you know, in, you know, in that sense. So, uh, Supergirl's fighting, it's, you know, she's trying to fight him without superpowers, and they're using their alien weapons, and they're, they're beating Supergirl, you know, to the ground. But the humans that were abducted, they get inspired, you know, by Supergirl, you know, they get inspired by, you know, all what she stands for and what she's saying, and they actually rise up and they fight back, and they're able to temporarily, um, you know, subdue these aliens. And, uh, you know, um, I did skip a part. Roulette is part of— you know, if we remember Roulette from the, the, the earlier, uh, you know, Supergirl episodes, you know, she had to leave Earth, you know, um, when she had that thing going with the aliens on, you know, on, um, you know, on Earth. But Uh, she had kind of moved up, you know. She would— she's now like an intergalactic, um, you know, slaver. And that's basically what it was. It's a, it's a slave ring where they, you know, they're basically, uh, doing, uh, you know, slave trafficking, intergalactic slave trafficking, you know. And so, uh, you know, Roulette is part of the crew. But, you know, the, the, the human beings who were abducted after a Supergirl speech, you know, and Supergirl showing them that you know, hey, I'm gonna fight whether I have powers or not, you know, they're able to all, you know, um, you know, to, uh, you know, to fight back and, you know, basically long enough to try to escape. And, you know, we also find out something else very interesting, that the Dominators have returned. You know, the Dominators are somehow involved in this. I don't know if they're there to buy slaves or if they're just part of the triangle, or, you know, however it works. But they are there, and Supergirl's like, I really hate the Dominators. And so, you know, as they're trying to escape, you know, the aliens and the Dominators, they're shooting, and they're, you know, trying to, you know, capture them. But Wynn and, you know, Alex and the team has just made it through the gate, so they're able to get there and, you know, basically, uh, you know, fight back. And so the Dominator ships and, uh, you know, are, um, you know, are basically, uh, you know, uh, coming towards them, you know, trying to stop them. But Alex, um, brings a— I haven't ever seen something like this on Supergirl yet, but there's this— it's a I believe it's called the Solar Grenade, and when they toss it in the air, it temporarily gives Supergirl her powers back because it infuses her with the radiation from the yellow sun. And so Supergirl, you know, is able to get her, you know, powers, you know, back long enough to fight off the, you know, the Dominators and the other alien race. Um, and there's two, you know, more interesting things I did miss. Uh, one is that the girl who was originally, uh, abducted, that Supergirl was at, you know, was, uh, trying to locate and bring back home, uh, I did find out online that her character, whose name was Izzy, is actually the daughter of Kevin Smith. So that's kind of interesting, you know, she was He was directing the show and, uh, she was acting in a, in a part. So it's pretty interesting. And, uh, also during the escape, you know, this was, uh, you know, kind of, uh, a bit, uh, you know, uh, uh, you know, I don't know, you know, where this is— well, I kind of got a theory of where this is going to go. But, um, the Dominators and the other alien race, they have this opportunity to kill Manel. And they don't do it, you know. They're like, no, no, not him, don't shoot him. And so one of the, you know, one of the, uh, the Dominator, they kind of do this bow to Mon-El, you know, almost like they're a subject to him or he's some kind of ruler or something like that. And so it's weird, you know. Mon-El runs off with Supergirl, you know. He doesn't tell anybody about this, you know. He decides to keep this information, uh, you know, uh, you know, basically to himself, you know. And, uh, so, uh, you know, as they're escaping, uh, you know, with the— or they're, or they're about to escape, um, you know, when is, uh, at the gate, you know, he stayed behind trying to make sure this thing, this device is, um functional so they could get home. And so an alien, uh, jumps out, starts fighting, you know, when, you know, at the gate, because Gwen is by himself, you know, there's nobody there but Gwen, you know, at the gate. And as this alien's fighting Gwen, I'm like, oh my goodness, uh, here we go again with Gwen, because, you know, Gwen, you know, is already, you know, suffering his PTSD and This is the second time this has happened, you know, that he's, you know, almost about to get killed. And so this time, um, somehow, you know, when finds the strength, you know, to fight back, you know, he, you know, when grabs a, you know, a rock, you know, from the planet, he's able to knock the alien out. And, you know, and, you know, so when kind of finds his strength, you know, in that moment, you know, he, he He stops running, you know, he decides to fight back. And so Supergirl and the rest of everybody's on the way and they're headed to get out of the gate, you know, as the army of the Dominators and the other alien races, you know, still on them in pursuit. And so they are able to escape, make it through the gate, and Supergirl blows up the portal, you know, the device, so that they can't follow them back through. And, uh, you know, and then so we move on to, uh, you know, the next scene is where, uh, basically Mon-El's telling, you know, Kara, you know, Supergirl, that, hey, you know, this all has changed me, that I now want to be a superhero with the cape and the suit and all that stuff. So I guess we'll finally get to see Mon-El's costume, you know, pretty soon, and you know, um, you know, see what's going on. But then, uh, we cut to, uh, you know, in the, in the earlier Supergirl episodes, we see, we saw these, I believe it was like either 2 or 3, these aliens, and they're in these robes, you can't see their faces, and they're looking for Mon-El. They're searching for Mon-El. So they, they go up to one of the aliens and they ask, well, hey, where is Mon-El? or I'm sorry, it's actually the alien doctor, you know, the one who was, you know, abducting everyone in the beginning. And they go up to him and they ask him, well, where's Manel at? And he's like, well, you know, he went back to Earth, you know. I guess he was supposed to hold Manel there till they got there. And so, uh, after he tells them that, they actually shoot and kill him, you know, you know. And so, uh, these people who are looking for Manel, uh, you know, they are, you know, they don't seem like very nice people or very noble people, and not sure why they're looking for Man-El. But, um, you know, I have a few theories and ideas, and as I think back on previous episodes, I can kind of, um, you know, see why this may be the case. And that is, uh, you know, a lot of people are starting to believe that Man-El was always the Prince of Daxam. And that he wasn't the bodyguard. And, you know, as we think back to like one of the first, you know, scenes of Daxam with, uh, you know, uh, with Moneo, you know, the, the, the prince, or the, the person thought to be the prince, was like, oh, I'm gonna stay behind, and, you know, you get in the ship and you go to Earth, you know, and I'm gonna stay here, blow up I'm gonna die with my people. But you know, that all seems very noble and everything, but you know, how many times have we seen where it's best to save the bodyguard than save the ruler of, you know, the planet, you know, the ruler of something? You know, usually the ruler is sent off and he's the last, uh, you know, survivor to be sent out. You know, even like Superman Uh, you know, he was sent off. But you know, the thing about Superman, as I looked at the history of Superman, you know, Superman's ancestors were actually rulers of Krypton— uh, I'm sorry, of continents on Krypton. You know, they ruled, uh, uh, they were, they were rulers actually, the, uh, El, the El family, you know. And, uh, they, I believe they ruled, if I'm not mistaken, like a fourth of of, uh, Krypton, uh, you know, hundreds of thousands of years ago. And so, you know, uh, even like Superman, Kal-El, he had this, uh, this, this kind of, uh, you know, you know, a nobility or rulership through his. And, you know, he saved, uh, you know, uh, aside from, you know, other inhabitants of the planets. And we've heard countless stories of, uh of, uh, you know, people of importance and of rulership and of noble blood being saved and being the sole survivors in a sense, or the last of their kind and, and, and things like that. So it was just very odd that, you know, the prince would be going, well, you get in the ship, Manuel, you know, and you take them all, what's good about Daxam, you know. And then Mon-El just jumps in the ship and goes, you know, as he's ordered by the prince to go. But you know what we're finding out, or what a lot of people are believing now, is that Mon-El is the prince. And that makes a lot of sense, you know. And of course, with this last closing scene, as we see the aliens bowing and they just won't kill him, we know for a fact he's of very much importance and people are looking for him. Now, I don't know who these people looking for him are. I don't know if they're looking for him as they may be, uh, uh, the last, uh, you know, uh, you know, remaining inhabitants of, uh, you know, Daxam, and they're looking for their prince, or if they're just some people looking to kill them. You know, it's either or. Maybe, maybe the first I think is more plausible. But, uh, you know, anyway, this was a pretty, you know, pretty good episode. Uh, I don't know, I think it was kind of a bit slow for me in the beginning I maybe expected, you know, a great deal more from the title and Kevin Smith, you know, doing the directing. Maybe I thought I'd get a lot more action, a lot more breakthroughs, but it is, you know, mid-season, and so they got to do a lot of setup, you know, for the future episodes. So all together, pretty solid episode. I enjoyed it, you know, and, you know, I look forward to doing more Supergirl reviews. And, you know, like I was saying earlier, the The channel is still pretty new, and a lot of these shows that I'm jumping in, you know, mid-season and things like that, it's not because I haven't been a show watcher and things like that, but it's more or less because shows do, and some of them were taking a break when I started the channel, and so I couldn't review them. So now I'm able to review them, and so there will be some episodes, various TV shows you'll see me just kind of jumping in mid-season and things like that. You know, but I have been watching the shows. It's just because the channel was new. But anyway, guys, if you like, you know, content like this, if you like the reviews, please don't forget to like and subscribe and come back for our next Supergirl review. Take care, guys.
