Superman - New Promo Pics!

The host breaks down James Gunn's new Superman costume, arguing the character's moral core matters more than visual flash. He praises the suit's blend of Silver Age colors and modern design, and compares it to Ozymandias: a hero's outfit should reflect philosophy, not just look powerful.

Welcome back to the channel, guys. I hope you're having a great evening. So we got released the Superman latest promo pictures, right? Some people think they look good. I think they look awesome as well, right? So Some people, you know, think it looks kind of cheesy. They don't like it. Not feeling it. It's a matter of taste. It's a taste thing, and it's probably how you view the history of Superman. So, you know, so for example, in the character of Superman, it's always been my focus on more so, uh, outside his physical attributes, right? Um, I, I think it could be safely said that the strongest components of Superman is his moral character, right? So a lot of people keep focusing on outfits, the suits, You know, if he's a Dragon Ball Z character, you know, some people just want to see him destroy everything. You know, whatever your take on Superman, for me it's always been his character as a hero, right? Because what we've seen in the comic book world, we've seen several dozen characters be overpowered. Now, and what happens when characters get overpowered is they become, uh, very bland and there's nothing much at stake, right? Um, and the thing about Superman, whereas he, he, he has in, in many iterations become quite close to being overpowered, especially in the comic books and some of the motion picture movies as well. Although that's happened, uh, the thing I think that was the main focal point of Superman was his character, right? And so you're already in a problem when you forget that and you focus less on Superman's character and you focus more on the suit he's wearing, you focus more on the CGI and destruction he's doing in the film. And, and I think we've gotten to see that with some of the Superman productions up to this point. Uh, I think James Gunn already gets that, uh, you know, he's going for that Boy Scout Superman. This uh, look of Superman bears a striking resemblance to, in some ways, to the Silver Age, you know, uh, Superman characters and such. Now I would have took it a step forward, uh, further, because looks like what Gunn's Superman is doing is he's kind of a mix, you know. If you look at this suit, which I like, Some people like it, some people don't. But if you look at the suit, it's kind of a mix between this, you know, that, that old Silver Age Superman and, uh, the, the more updated, you know, Superman, right, suits and looks. And, um, you know, '52 Superman, right? Um, And that's kind of grabbing the best of both worlds, right? That way, if a person's kind of, you know, oh, I kind of like that, you know, old school Superman look, you know, uh, versus a lot of the, the newer age suits that Superman dons, um, you can kind of maybe find a balance in the middle. I thought that was a pretty cool way to handle it. Uh, of course I'm always a big fan of the architecture of the Fortress of Solitude, and you get it in this promo. This, this Fortress of Solitude, although very Donner-like, right, not as neat, right, a little bit more, uh, organic, right, and a little bit more, um, alien, right, which is, which is all fine by me. Um, I hope I don't sound like I'm in a wind tunnel, right? I'm in a different part of the house today. Um, and so I'm fine with all that, right? A very classic look to Superman, right? Any shots, uh, and I, you know, and I think that works. I think that works well. Um, you know, I was just thinking too, you guys remember The Watchmen? You remember— maybe I can get a, a shot of it. Okay, if you're familiar with The Watchmen, which I, I do believe is a part of DC Comics, right? I think Dr. Manhattan is the most powerful hero in the DC Comics, right? But, uh, if you're familiar with The Watchmen, right, if you're looking at some of these pictures, you see, uh, let's see here. Okay, you got Ozymandias, right? Okay, uh, Adrian Veidt, right? And so throughout the comic books, you kind of have more of his classic look, uh, which would be you know, kind of here in the purple, right? Jeremy Irons plays an older version of him. And then you got— you get the first Watchmen movie that comes out in 2009 where you can tell— look what— look at the suit. What— you can tell what they're trying to do. Who are they? What— what look are they going for? They're going for a more darker— because Batman was a big thing, right? This is the trap everybody fell in during this time. Everybody had to be badass, right? But Ozymandias is a character who is one of the most— the most intelligent person in the world, right? He's— his thing isn't necessarily to be badass, but to be ahead of everybody else, right? And, uh, so his suit doesn't have to reflect that. I kind of compare that to Superman, right? Superman's suit, uh, kind of embodies some of his wholesome characteristics, classic, traditional, old-fashioned Kansas values, right? He doesn't have to wear tight-fitting suits and look like Batman, right? And, uh, you know, and so everybody fell into that trap, right? So I think that's the best way I can explain it, especially when I encounter a lot of people who are obsessed with the Superman suit, when they're obsessed with the underpants, because they, you know, they, they, they they've probably seen various artistic pictures of Superman. They want Superman to look a certain way, and I understand that. But, you know, the character of Superman, very classic. You look at somebody like David Corenswet, who did very intensive workouts, right? And I would have liked to just see him in a plain classic-looking suit, kind of like the one Brandon Routh done in Superman Returns. Um, I, I think we're a little bit too far beyond the '70s to get those bright color Supermans with the yellows in them and all of that. But I thought what they did with the Brandon Roth Superman in an updated classic look of Superman was probably— to me, I think it's still the best— would be for me the best Superman suit I've seen, right? Uh, nope, no padded muscles because that's not James Gunn's thing. He doesn't want to see the padded muscles. But all of these guys who played Superman have been in fabulous shape. The thing about it though is, uh, it's just something about that classic look, a real person under just, you know, normal costumes, right? You know, not fake muscles, not padded muscles, not sculpted suits and so on, right? And so they try to do it. And who did The Watchmen, right, with this look? Zack Snyder, right, for you guys in the Snyderverse. And I did like The Watchmen. I like some of the changes from the comics. Some people didn't like it, but anyway, you guys get my point, you know, about, uh, this what I believe to be this more classic look of Superman that James Gunn's doing. I get the direction he's going. It's more colorful. It's more, I believe, uh, related to Superman's character. And so I like the promo shots. I like the photos. I like that bright, colorful, classic. It looks kind of like the old, like, you know, older comic versions would look. You know, it doesn't look, um, you know, like things we would necessarily see in a promo superhero film today. And I'm fine with that. I'm fine with that different direction. I want to see all things different because as much as people want to see the, um, the another origin story of Superman. They want to see another kind of like just pure Superman film. Uh, you know, when you have people like Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, you know, do a Superman film and they tell his origin story and they do all that stuff, they have a film like Superman Returns that goes, hey, you know, this was too well done, we can't mess with that, let's not try to redo this, reboot this, let's just try to follow along with that on that vein and tell a different story, right? Uh, I'm fine with that. I think once something's been done very, very well, you might not need to do it again, uh, you know what I'm saying, in this kind of sense of redundancy. But, uh, James Gunn, this version of Superman You know, people already know who he is. I think that's a good move. Yeah, let's not start as day one. That's— to me, that just feels crazy. Uh, let's just move into another part of Superman's life. He's been out there doing this thing a while. He now has other superhero characters he's engaging with. Maybe they're doing some team-ups, you know, or whatever the case may be. It is time to progress the Superman story in film along, right? We don't, you know, we don't need any more, uh, you know, we don't need any more, uh, Lex Luthors. There's, you know, in fact, we're going to get that in this film, but it looks like it's going to be a lot of more things going on than what we generally see. But that's all I want to say in this video, guys. Guys, tell me what you all thought about this, the new Superman promos. And, uh, until next time, as always, take care of yourselves and each Shutter. Don't forget to hit the like button. Don't forget to hit that subscribe button.
