Superman Passes $600 million - Future of the Gunnverse

In this YouTube commentary, the host celebrates the new Superman film’s $600 million worldwide gross, attributing its success to James Gunn’s distinctive storytelling and the integration of the character into the Gunnverse, especially via the Peacemaker series. The video examines the polarized fan response, highlighting active anti‑SnyderVerse campaigns that urged audiences to boycott the film, and contrasts this with the supportive Gunnverse community. The host contextualizes the box‑office performance within a broader cultural moment marked by heightened anti‑American sentiment, arguing that such sentiment may have hindered international earnings. The analysis praises David Corenswet’s portrayal as a recognizable Superman, notes the film’s blend of classic Boy‑Scout heroism with the darker, humor‑laden tone of Gunn’s other projects (e.g., The Boys, Peacemaker), and speculates on future team‑up possibilities, particularly a Justice League‑style crossover. Throughout, the host invites viewer interaction and encourages subscription.

Welcome back to the channel, guys. I hope you're having a great day. Superman has officially passed $600 million. Quite interesting, right? Quite interesting. This movie, uh, controversial, uh, throughout its course, uh, you know, being taken over by the Gunnverse and the interesting take James Gunn, uh, put into the Superman world, right? Uh, and so a lot of people didn't think it would go very far, where some people thought it would go, like myself, thought it would go up to the billion-dollar area, and that did happen. Um, and, um, you know, the movie turned out to be very much a James Gunn Superman. Now, I liked it. I like the James Gunn universe. And especially now, like many that are watching Peacemaker, right? I was a latecomer to the Peacemaker series, and I'm kind of glad I was because when I got into Peacemaker, season 2 was just about to come out, right? So that's all awesome because I didn't have to wait. I like the fact I was able to transition and get to see the first episode of season 2. And 'cause I was, watching episode by episode. I was like binge-watching Peacemaker. I really like that universe, guys. Now, the James Gunn universe, right, is proven to be something undeniable with a lot of people, although the fandom has been split down the center. Uh, it seems James Gunn's still hammering back his fandom to go out and support this Superman film and so on, right? You got, you gotta take into consideration there are a lot of things that was working against this film, right? First off, you had the, you had people literally online, uh, part of SnyderVerse, right? I've never seen this done with a Superman film in history. And that is they were literally running campaigns to keep people from going to watch this version of Superman. Now, guys, even when I saw Man of Steel, you know, as this kind of dark version of Superman, me being a big supporter of the Donnerverse, the Christopher Reeve Supermans, and liking the Boy Scout version of Superman. Even when, you know, I saw they were trying to, you know, go on this Batman hype and make this version of Superman like a Batman dark character, right? And even though I was always saying that I would like to see a serious version of Superman, what it would be like, and they did try to transition to that. I didn't mean making him dark, but I meant kind of having him in a dark world. Uh, you know, or, you know, or those elements. Uh, even though it turned out not to be what I wanted, I never would have staged a campaign with Superman fans to push something like, don't go see this movie, right? I, I feel like a Superman fan is truly a fan through and through, right? And we can appreciate it, like much what I did with Man of Steel. We can appreciate many aspects of the Superman mythos that we can identify with, right? Uh, Man of Steel, they didn't have the Fortress of Solitude. That's something that was always iconic and one of the biggest, most interesting things about the Superman mythos I personally like. And Zack Snyder's version, they takes that away and puts it on a spaceship, right? Didn't like that. There's just so much things I didn't like, but then there were some things I liked about Man of Steel. And I, and I'll tell you what it was. I like the look of it, right? A lot of, or so much just the, the, the physics of the Superman flying. I did like that, right? But that's about the only thing I liked about the SnyderVerse version, right? Um, but When you take that into consideration, that, that fandom, half that, the, the entire fandom from that genre of films has split and were gone. You also take into consideration that we're at the one of the most anti-American, uh, periods in history. I don't think it's ever been this bad on an anti-American scale. Even when we had the Iraq War, we changed the French fries to Freedom fries. Right, because there's just so much anti-American sentiment about falsely going into that war. Even with that, it didn't seem as bad as it is now. And I think that's simply because we're in a period now where we're having trade wars directly targeting and harming other nations, right? Physically harming these people. Economic wars as they were. And so then you create anti-American pushback with a very much pro-American superhero who stands for truth, justice, and the American way, right? So obviously that doesn't help ticket sales internationally. So those are two major things working across this movie and it still hits $600 million. Now, one thing that can't be denied about Superman is that— or I'm sorry, about James Gunn's version of Superman— is that this guy is a great storyteller, right? If you've seen the work of James Gunn, I mean, hate him or love him, you cannot deny he tells great stories, right? Um, he's a great writer. He puts this stuff together and whereas it may not come out like we picture it, it is so very much interesting how it does turn out. Uh, it holds your interest and so on. This Gunnverse, as it were, and this version of Superman existing in the Peacemaker realm, existing, uh, uh, you know, in, in this, uh, world of, uh, the Gunnverse where it is so much different, uh, than we've seen before. It's quite interesting, right? Uh, now I think what makes it work is the David Corenswet version of Superman is very much a recognizable Superman, right? So although the world Superman finds himself in we may see slightly different, it is still very much Superman in that world. So that works. The other thing that seems to work with the Gunnverse, I think, uh, if you've gotten into Peacemaker, that I think is going to forever hold everybody's interest is this very much similar vibe to what you get to like with like The Boys, Homelander, right? Gen V, right? These, um, kind of darkish superhero films that can be these kind of comic booky, weird, dark humor superhero films, but at the same time they can feel kind of realistic to the, the watcher, right? As crazy as that sounds, for some reason it works. I can't fully explain why, but if you're into stuff like that it's gonna work for you. If you're into things like Peacemaker, it's gonna work for you. And I think the fact that many of us are, and the Gunverse is similar to that, although presenting this Boy Scout like Superman, it for some reason works. I think with me as well, I was hoping to see a new chapter in the Superman mythos, because I thought it had already been done perfect, all the origin stories. I thought the best thing that could have been done with the Superman films were what we got after the Donnerverse Superman, which was Superman Returns, which was an homage and pretty much a continuation of the Donnerverse, right? And I thought that worked great. The film was too slow for a more dark, a more dark superhero period, right? The Batman coming out, you know, Batman coming out, the Christopher Nolan's Batman. Uh, so you got the Christopher Nolan Batman and then you got, you got the Bryan Singer Superman, which is basically still linked to the Donnerverse. And so these, this world is different from that world and this is a different audience at that time. So it It worked for me. It was too slow for that audience at that time, but the idea was to— the next film was to be a lot more action-packed. I would have loved to see that, but that's not what we got. We ended up getting Man of Steel and we ended up going down that roller coaster. All that said, after seeing the beginning of the Superman a journey, in my opinion, done correctly. I then wanted to see, um, which was basically a, um, new chapter in Superman's life, how he could work with other characters, uh, superheroes, right? And James Gunn, he's the king of team-ups, right? So, uh, you know, if I had one criticism, you know, about the Gunnverse and You know, me understanding he had to set the Superman film up, Superman being the biggest, you know, most iconic money-grossing character for the studios. They were going to want to do a Superman movie, right? Uh, you know, you know, obviously. But if James Gunn could have just done like a Justice League movie with Superman, I would have been fine with that. I think he would have nailed it right? Having just a Justice League movie, just come straight out with it. Because the way James Gunn works, like how he's done the Suicide Squad and how everybody kind of— how he's, uh, Melvin, uh, the Peacemaker, and into this version of Superman, it works, right? It, it can work. And, uh, it can work at lightning speed. Just how James Gunn puts it together. Whereas I thought, um, and a lot of people think this DC Universe has to build up like kind of how the Marvel formula was. With James Gunn, I don't think it has to do that. I think he's just naturally already able to write a lot of characters together and he could make it work, right? Because even with what he did with the Superman film. It was already kind of like a team-up, right? This Superman was already— had been engaging with Hawkgirl, the Green Lantern, whoever else will be involved in that. As kind of spoiler alert, what we got to see in Peacemaker, they're looking for more people to come into the Justice League game. Uh, all of that worked, guys. So that's my, my take on where we're at with this version of Superman. Uh, I would like to hear you guys' thoughts and opinions about it. Are you surprised it's crossed over $600 million? Did you expect it to do more? And are you looking forward to the future developments with this particular Superman world? As always, take care of yourselves and each other.
