Superman - Why the James Gunn Superman Suit Looks Better Than Man Of Steel Suit!

In this opinion‑driven YouTube commentary, the host argues that James Gunn’s interpretation of Superman’s costume is superior to the Zack Snyder/Man of Steel design. He begins by framing the debate as a showdown between two iconic looks: Henry Cavill’s Snyder‑era suit and the newer Gunn‑era suit. The speaker critiques the Snyder suit for its padded, artificial musculature, dark, Batman‑inspired color palette, excessive ornamental details (golden buttons, wrist‑guard weaving), and an overly sexualized, tight silhouette that he claims makes Superman unapproachable. He contrasts this with the classic look of Christopher Reeve’s 1970s spandex suit, emphasizing its timeless, wholesome aesthetic. The host then outlines James Gunn’s design philosophy: a loose, unpadded suit that echoes Silver Age comics, prioritizes a boy‑next‑door, wholesome image, and avoids the “edgy” trends of modern superhero costumes. Throughout, he references specific actors (Reeve, Cavill, Brandon Routh, David Corenswet), directors (Snyder, Gunn), and visual elements (color, fit, accessories) to support his claim that authenticity and simplicity better convey Superman’s moral character. He acknowledges differing tastes but maintains that Gunn’s suit aligns more closely with Superman’s core identity. The video concludes with a typical YouTube call‑to‑action.

Welcome back to the channel. I hope you're all having a great evening. And so we got to do this, folks. This has to be the final showdown, uh, whose Superman suit is the best. Is it the Henry Cavill's, uh, Snyderverse suit, or is it going to be the James Gunn suit. And I'm going to explain to you all why the James Gunn Superman suit is better than the Snyderverse suit. Now a lot of people are going to say, oh, you're taking it too far now, uh, you know, that is no way possible the James Gunn suit is better than the Snyderverse suit, right? But I think by the end of the video, I'm gonna convince over half of you all from this, from the Snyderverse. I, I'm not— I don't have problems with the traditional Superman fans, but, uh, Snyderverse people aren't Superman fans. But I'm going to show you why, how I'm going to, uh, show you all the, the key differences why this suit is not the best Superman. It's not better than the James Gunn suit. Right? So at first glance, you might think this is a badass suit. You might go, wow, look at the design, the attention to detail. Looks like chainmail, you know, inside the suit. Looks pretty good, right? Doesn't it look pretty good? Um, but guys, there are some key issues. With this suit. Um, I don't know who designed this suit, but they just got too out of control with this suit. So, so let's look at some of the problems with this suit, the obvious problems. First off, it's a padded suit. The muscles are fake, right? Now, Henry Cavill He, to his credit, he worked out very hard to get his body in shape, right? But this isn't his body still. You know, when Christopher Reeves did it in the original Superman, he wore that kind of tight— that's when they wore tights like that, like the, uh, what do you call that, like the spandex tights. But Christopher Reeve looked good in that suit. Because that— but that was all Christopher Reeve. Let's take a look at that for reference so you guys understand, because for me to prove you all why this is the not the best Superman suit and why James Gunn's suit is better, we, we need a full context. All right guys, this is Chris Reeve, right? Christopher Reeves, right? Um, the OG Superman. But you see how he's wearing this spandex, right? Now, I, I know this is like a 1970s suit, and some people might consider it kind of, uh, hokey, you know, a bit. But the thing— but, but admittedly though, um, you gotta— you, you— for some reason, right, that maybe I can't even explain, for some reason that suit always looked good. You know, it's like a timeless suit, right? And you can see Christopher Reeves, how he got his body in shape for the suit. That's all Christopher Reeves, right? And, uh, James Gunn had a problem with, uh, you know, using those padded muscles in the suit, right? In an article, in an interview he did, right? And, um, at first I was kind of like, I don't know about that, why would he do that? But now I kind of get why he did it, right? I, I think he's been heavily influenced by the Donner film Superman. I— that's my personal opinion. But it is something about authentically real, right, that you just can't— it's just something about real, guys, that you can't take away. Also keep in mind that muscles have nothing to do with Superman's strength and his power, right? And even in the comics, right, uh, whereas artists have depicted characters just, oh, you know, must just overdevelop with muscles, it always seemed to kind of dial back on Superman, right? Like they didn't want to emphasize him as, uh, you know, you know, even Even though he was, you know, he was super strong, uh, it was more so strength of character that was important, right? But the design of a suit, right— we're going to get back to Man of Steel because I'm going to break it down for you guys, but I just want you to kind of understand the entire context of the authenticity of a suit is important as well, right? Let's take a look back at the Man of Steel suit. Then we'll get on to the Zack Snyder suit and show you why it, why it works. All right, so this is why this suit doesn't work right. Now here's the problem, guys. Okay, if you look at the weaving of this suit, especially around the wrist guard area right now, that is clearly Batman influence, right? Kind of to me, that's my opinion. This, you know, this suit was created on, oh, you know, can we make him like Batman, right? Uh, kind of dark, a little bit like Batman. Even the suit is dark. That's, you know, that's the other problem. Dark for, for the character of Superman. I don't— dark colors, I don't think work on him well. But, uh, You got this padded muscle suit, and then you got the wrist guard weaving like, like it's Batman. And then look, look, look at these— all this, uh, all these, these ornaments, right? How ornamental the suit is. It is like the Liberace of, uh, Superman suits, right? Look at all those buttons, these golden buttons and lines and That, that's too much. Uh, that's too much because, um, you know, Superman is, um, you know, he's supposed to be a Boy Scout, modest, boy next door, right? And here's the other problem: look how tight this suit is. It's exposing his man unit, right? Uh, that's too sexy. Superman shouldn't be too sexy like this. This is way— this suit is way too sexy, uh, and, and it, it makes Superman unapproachable, right? Superman should be, uh, pretty much normal looking. Like, uh, you know, if you look at most of the Superman, the men throughout the ages, these were handsome, attractive people, but they weren't overly attractive, you get what I'm saying? They weren't like runway models, and they didn't wear sexy suits, right? They, they wore hopeful costumes, but they weren't sexy. This is a sexy— this is a sexy suit. This— look, I, I know we're in a generation where, uh, you guys wear those skinny jeans, right? It's the skinny jeans are a thing, right? Those tight pants. Um, but, uh, you know, Superman He doesn't, he doesn't wear stuff exposing his man unit like that. That's why 90% of the Supermen wore trunks, right? Otherwise you expose your man unit. God bless an icon like Rick James. But those tight suits, right, with the spandex and all of that, those suits Superman shouldn't be— shouldn't be sexy like that, right? He's supposed to be, uh, what's that term when you're, uh, uh, oh geez, I can't— uh, not boy next door. What's that? Wholesome, right? Wholesome. Superman's supposed to have a wholesome image. He's supposed to have a wholesome image. Now let's get into, uh, Uh, the James Gunn suit. This suit knocks the Man of Steel suit out the park, right? It's loose, right, where you can see, uh, you know, like the, the, you know how artist interpretation, like how they draw heroes over-muscular in the comics and You know, yeah, that, that stuff works good on the pages, right? And it— and a, and a lot of it looks good. I'm not saying it doesn't look good, uh, I'm saying this is a better looking suit for the character of Superman, right? Superman shouldn't be wearing tight pants, uh, this is loose. The trunks are loose, right? He got room, uh, The, the, the— this is— it's 100% David Chorus. What is— no fakeness. The suit's not padded. It's not any fakeness. That's all him, 100%, right? Um, uh, he has the wholesome look, the boy next door look, right? He doesn't look like a European runway model. Uh, that's, that's, you know, that's not the suit for Superman. Uh, this kind of blend of what we got with Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, this is the Superman, uh, suit. You know, you guys want to see these, uh, these dark, edgy, uh, you know, really cool suits. And it's a taste thing. I get it, I get it. It's a taste thing. I mean, it's such a— it's become such a big issue for many of you all. It's knocking out the movie, right? You don't even want to watch the movie because you got this image in your head of Superman, right? But a lot of the imagery of Superman is him more in a savior role. In a Christ-like role, right? Superman's not, uh, you know, an edgy type, uh, clothes-wearing bad boy. And when I see the suits like Man of Steel where they're trying to— they're trying to make them edgy, they're trying to make them compete with the Dark Knight, they're trying to make them dark, they're darkening up the suit— Superman wears bright colors, right? Most of the time you see Superman in a bright colored suit. The Man of Steel suit, they chose the darkest blue they could find, the tightest getup bodysuit they could find, with the Liberace ornaments around it, right? And it's very sexy suit, but it's not a— it's a nice looking suit. But not for Superman, right? See, Superman is my favorite character because of his character. It's not because he's overpowered, right? And it's not because he wears the best suits. He doesn't have to wear the best suits. He, he, he doesn't have to peacock in the best Superman suit. Because his character is what's, uh, important, is, is what we're looking at, right? I don't want Superman too sexy, you know. He's not, uh, what's that, what's those pretty boys in the comics like, you know? He's, he's not, uh, uh, uh, you know, the Batmans and the Cyclopses and they can wear stuff like that, right? Uh, but not Superman, right? So, uh, you know, again, going back to the Christopher Reeve Superman suit, uh, to me, the suit, even it can hold— it holds up today with the trousers. I, I know a lot of people think it's dated, but I, I guess that goes to my, my final point about this suit, right? It is a mix. Look, we can't get all the— in this image you can't get the attention to detail of how the fabrics come together in the suit. I thought it looked nice, right? How the boots look, uh, how to, you know, how they're cut and all that. I think all that looks great. But you, you know why I like this suit so much and I think it's better? Uh, I like this kind of retro kind of mix between like that super— that Silver Age Superman and a modern— it's almost like, because if you really look at the corn sweatsuit, it's like, it looks like just like some of those, the, the New 52 suits, right? If you took off the trousers and just put the, you know, it just had a belt, you know, had the belt, right? But it seems to me, uh, this is a kind of mix between the two. You're kind of going old school Silver Age trunks, and then you're combining those together. And at first I was like, I don't know if I like that. That's how come I was never saying it's the best Superman suit. I still don't think it's the best Superman suit, but compared to the Man of Steel suit, it's better than the Man of Steel suit. Because the Man of Steel suit, it's got the buttons, the, the— all those designs with the wings and the wrist guards and the Liberace-inspired design. Uh, that, that's not the best Superman suit, guys. This is better than that suit. And I, I like the fact that they chose to give it this close, because when I see David Corensweth in this suit, I think, you know, wholesome. I think, uh, He's covered up, right? I like that. I, I don't, I don't, I don't like all that other stuff unless you're kind of an anti-hero, dark hero. Then you can wear the black, then you can wear the leather. You guys kind of understand what I'm saying? Maybe you don't. Maybe some people get what I'm saying, maybe some people don't. Maybe some people still like that, you know, like the Man of Steel suit and whatnot. But I like that old school, traditional, authentic authentic. And I think that's what James Gunn was going for. No padded muscles, no fake muscles, guys, you know, no doing too much on suit. Just simple, old school, Silver Age. This is Superman. And for some reason, even if the suit looks dated, that works for Superman when they do that. Only for Superman though. I'm not saying this works for Those other heroes out there, they're not Superman. They don't stand for the things Superman, uh, they don't have the high moral aptitude, uh, and level that Superman has. So it's just different, right? It's different. But that's my take on it, guys. I know a lot of you guys are gonna rag me, uh, in the comment section, and that's okay. That's all right. It's a taste thing. You're entitled to your taste, but I'm showing you all another take. Another way to view this and, and, and how to look at this. All right guys, uh, don't forget to like and subscribe and share this video, uh, because it's probably going to be a, a different opinion you've never heard before. And until next time, as always, take care of yourselves and each other.
