Taboo Season 1 Episode 5 [Review]

In this YouTube review, the host walks through the events of Taboo season 1 episode 5, offering a recap and personal commentary. He begins by noting his growing appreciation for the series and describes the episode’s opening duel between James Delaney’s sister’s husband and Delaney, explaining the duel’s rules and the surprising outcome where Delaney survives a seemingly fatal shot thanks to the East India Company’s involvement. The reviewer then examines the subplot involving an American doctor‑spy who pressures Delaney to supply gunpowder, linking it to the contested Nuka Sound territory and raising questions about British eminent‑domain law and the Crown’s ability to seize land abroad. He discusses the East India Company’s conflict with the Crown, highlighted by a Black lawyer leading an investigation into a suspicious slave‑ship incident and the company’s attempts to destroy incriminating documents. The episode’s secondary storyline follows Delaney’s sister’s abusive marriage, an exorcism ritual, and her ambiguous reaction afterward, prompting the reviewer to reflect on the moral complexity of rooting for her. He also notes Delaney’s retrieval of his father’s trunk, the selective burning of documents, and the limited personal items he keeps. Throughout, the host expresses mixed feelings—finding the episode fair and entertaining but wishing for different narrative choices—and speculates on future plot directions, ending with a call for viewer comments and a reminder to like and subscribe.

Hey guys, welcome back to the channel, and today we will be reviewing Taboo episode 5. And, um, as I have been saying, guys, about this show, uh, you know, it's quickly becoming one of my, one of my favorite shows on, on television. And it, it's kind of surprising a little bit because, um, I didn't think I would like this show you know, as much as I'm starting to like it. Um, I thought this was a fair episode this week. Um, um, you know, we basically, um, it basically picks up right at the end of, um, last week's episode, which I had been anticipating. And this week's episode was fair. Uh, there were some things that happened on the, on this episode that I kind of thought would go another way. It didn't go that way. And so I think I was kind of, you know, hoping that it would have finished a certain way. I didn't quite get that. But, you know, all in all, I still thought it was a fair episode, pretty good episode. But, you know, it picks up with the duel. You know, the question was left hanging. to, uh, James Delaney, you know, from his sister's, um, uh, husband, if he would accept this duel. And, um, the show picks up with them heading to the duel. So, uh, the duel is happening, and, uh, so, um, you know, they basically get their guns ready and they're explaining how the duel works, you know. One guy shoots, and after he shoots, you know, they advance to one another, and then the other guy gets his shot. And, um, James Delaney's, or rather his sister's, um, husband wants it to be to the death, but they won't allow that, you know, for it to be to the death. It's only to who draws first blood. And so You know, so far with the show, we've seen James to be quite the capable warrior. And, uh, you know, so you're looking at the show and you're looking at the situation and you're kind of going, well, we kind of know you can't kill him, he can't end up dead because, well, then we wouldn't have much of a show. So, um, uh, so I'm, I'm thinking that, okay, well, this is going to be an easy way to get rid of the sister's husband. You know, throughout this duel. So, but to my surprise, what happens is when they start, uh, taking so many, uh, paces away from each other and turn to head back to each other, these sisters— or rather, James's sister's husband, he fires his shot and he hits, uh, James. And it looks pretty much like a death shot, like a death blow. So I'm like, whoa. I'm like, um, You know, this guy, I didn't know he had it in him. He seems to be a pretty good shot. You know, James is supposed to be dead at this point, but you know, we find that James is not dead, that, that, um, no bullet actually hits him. Uh, and so James keeps advancing and, uh, you know, pulls his gun and, and then he, he, you know, he informs his sister's husband, you know, basically that you know, you weren't going to be able to kill me because the East India Company, uh, you know, basically couldn't let me die. So your, your man who, who, uh, you know, was, uh, uh, basically, uh, presented your gun to you— so because they had, you know, they had to check the guns to make sure the guns were proper, and, uh, you know, he had his basically his You know, his guy who loaded his guns for him and did these things, these different things. He was basically bought, you know, by the East India Company. He tried to run off, and whereas we thought, you know, James would, uh, you know, kill the sister's husband for all of the, uh, uh, you know, the, uh, bad things he's done to James and the accusations and, you know, all the negative things, he actually, you know, shoots the guy who's working for the East India Company for, you know. So, uh, just interesting. You know, with that scene, how that, you know, how that entire incident played out. And, uh, you know, basically we also get James. He's summoned, you know, by the American spy, the doctor here, you know, you know, in the photo when he's basically, uh, you know, it seems he's, he's either created this cholera, uh, situation or it's kind of a cholera situation, maybe to keep, you know, people from heading down there to be discovered, you know, discover what he's got going on. But, uh, he's basically, um, you know, telling James that he's gonna need that, you know, that gunpowder that, um, you know, that he's, you know, been, uh, trying to produce. And so, you know, it seems James goes along with this, and they seem, uh, he seems to be locked into doing business with the Americans. And, you know, obviously they could kill him. You know, they're keeping him alive. You know, they're allowing him to live, basically. So I guess he really doesn't have much of a choice because, you know, of course, if he dies, uh, the Nuka Sound, the land, passes to the Americans. And this is the only way he can stay alive from being, you know, killed by the East India Company. So he seems to have to, you know, do business with the Americans in this, you know, in this regard. And so, you know, James throughout the episode, you know, he's also, um, you know, having to meet with the Countess, you know, head of the spy ring, and she's trying to get the Nuka Sound from under him. But, you know, he's letting her know that, hey, you know, uh, trust is gonna have to be, uh, you know, uh, you know, earned, uh, you know, before, you know that the Nuka Sound can be, you know, turned over in that way. But we also get with the East India Company, um, that the Crown is getting closer on their heels because, you know, although like how we had mentioned earlier that the, uh, that the Nuka Sound situation, it was a, um, private, uh, you know, matter, it wasn't a state matter because it had to deal with business and commerce. And that's another thing I'm not quite sure of. If anybody who might be— who watches the channel or watches this broadcast who might be from Britain or the UK who understands property laws or something like that, I'm just a little bit curious as to did the idea like eminent domain exist? Because You know, uh, you know, I'm thinking, you know, like in the situation with this Nuka Sound territory, with the— with a citizen owning this land, um, you know, I'm kind of thinking that they would be able to take it. But maybe, maybe it could be— maybe eminent domain laws only work if it's within the country. Itself. And so maybe that's why the Crown could never, you know, get involved in something like that, even though, you know, this territory is, you know, is a, you know, very, you know, key, uh, you know, uh, uh, thing for the, you know, for the British government at this time. But I guess because it's outside the country, uh, they, they couldn't enact anything like eminent domain. So that's what I was trying to figure out, that you know, um, you know, if it was some kind of, uh, a military strategy, you know, or something like that. Or, uh, uh, you know, is there, is there no kind of laws that can be imposed on citizens to take this land? But I'm guessing the answer would be no because it would be outside of their territory. So maybe that would be why that, you know, they couldn't enact anything to that fashion. But But the Crown is getting away pretty much to, to deal with the East India Company, and that's because the East India Company, a ship full of slaves that was sank, um, it was believed to either be sank for insurance purposes by the East India Company or to slave— or to hide the fact that it— the ship contained slaves. You know, maybe it was done for both reasons. You know, maybe they— you know, and so we have this Black lawyer who's basically taken over this, you know, what would be this charge against East India, you know, or this investigation. And, um, you You know, it's, um, it's very interesting because, um, I'm just wondering if— I understand that in Britain slavery ended, uh, a lot earlier than it ended in the Americas, you know, in North America. And, uh, so I just found that interesting. They had a Black lawyer and he's heading up this case, uh, to, uh, deal with the East India Company. I'm wondering if that's for either one of two reasons, is that I'm wondering if— is that due to maybe nobody else wants to go after the East India Company? But I'm assuming he works for the crown as well, so, uh, maybe that has something to do with it. But the East India Company knows he's coming, so what the East India Company is trying to do is they're trying to basically kind of stall them, and then they're going to be burning, you know, important documents that can prove that, you know, they, you know, did this, uh, illegal, you know, activity in which the Crown can now come after them, you know, and it becomes a state matter, you know, in that regard. And then we also, you know, in this episode got, uh, you know, James Delaney's sister who's, um, you know, basically was, um, uh, you know, having one of her nights of passion with herself, you know. And I don't— you know, again, this show kind of plays on, you know, James, you know, doing these, uh, voodoo or witchcraft, uh, you know, uh, things. And, um, he, um, uh, you know, you just don't know if it's him that's, you know, making her, uh, have these sexual desires, or is it something that's already inside of her, you know, that was always there? I'm not sure which is which because they kind of mix it all together. But she actually calls out James' name, and her husband hears, and of course, you know, he goes, you know, he goes crazy after that, and he just really starts beating on her and, you know, being quite abusive, you know, to her. Then he decides to get an exorcist, uh, or having a, you know, an exorcism, you know, done on her. And, uh, you know, this guy is a real, you know, he's a real jerk of the show, you know. He's a, you know, he, I, you know, you would think after James saved his life he would have a little bit of gratitude about that, you know. But, uh, you know, he's pretty much seems unchanged by the, you know, by the event. And, um, you know, he's pretty much, you know, being the jerk he's, you know, always been. So, you know, have this, uh, very, uh, you know, very, uh, strange scene where this exorcist comes in and he's doing all these chants and spells to try to, uh, you know, basically, uh, exorcise, you know, you know, the evil spirits out of the sister. And, you know, she's basically trying to fight him off And, uh, it's this very humiliating experience for her, you know, as she's trying, you know, as she's being tied up, she's being tied down and this and that. And so, you know, I'm thinking that, you know, after she, um, you know, is released from the exorcism, you know, the husband's asking her to come to bed and this and that, but, you know, she's just, you know, you can tell it the incidents changed her. And she's having this conversation with, um, you know, with, uh, in the mirror with herself. And, uh, you know, I don't know, it's kind of left open if she's going to, uh, try to kill her husband or injure him some kind of way. She's, you know, messing with a sharp object. But what's kind of odd about the scene is she seems more possessed after the exorcism is done than any possession she may have had prior to that. So, you know, kind of strange episode this week. Uh, you know, I, I was entertained by it. I thought it was fair, but I wish it would have went in some different directions than the direction that it went in. Um, you know, but, uh, you know, I thought it— I thought it was a, a, you know, uh, you know, a good episode all in all. Um, And so, uh, you know, next, I'm not really sure what direction the next episode is gonna, gonna go in. Um, we did get James finally getting the trunk as well with his father's belongings, and he was burning all the documents. Apparently he just wanted the, uh, the purchase orders of his mom and some trade agreements and things like that, and Um, you know, he was burning everything else, burning all the, uh, you know, things, you know, the ex-wife thought, you know, or his now kind of, I guess, slash stepmom living in the, in the house with him, you know. He was, you know, burning, um, personal, uh, objects that, you know, she thought he would find important, and he didn't. He only found, you know, just the purchase agreement concerning his mom and different things like that. Another thing I thought was, uh, I thought maybe after his sister was abused, I thought she would try to leave her husband and run to him, you know, for some kind of help. And that didn't happen. But, uh, it's kind of strange to watch this show because of the, the subject matter. I'm like, you know, who am I supposed to be rooting for? Because, you know, they've set it up so the, uh, James' sister, uh, you know, she's obviously in an abuse— an abusive relationship with, you know, with the jerk— with a jerk. But although James wants her to come to him, it's like, you know, if you're rooting for her to come to him, you know, you're basically rooting for her to come to him and, and be in this, in this very taboo, inappropriate relationship. So that's kind of where the show kind of, you know, kind of puts us in a very weird, odd situation. But, uh, you know, uh, the show obviously wants us to understand how much of a jerk her husband is, and, you know, we definitely don't want her with him. So again, folks, I like this show as well. If you're not watching, I hope you all, you know, give it a chance and let me all know what you think about the show. If you do watch the show, please feel free to comment below. Let me, let me know what you thought about this week's episode. And again, like Taboo, I think it's a great show, but just not certain, you know, what's the— how this show is going to end, you know, you know, uh, with, with, with, you know, Mr. Delaney. I don't really have a lot of predictions, you know, with this show. Uh, I do know that he is trying to get passage to the Americas with his sister, but, uh, we'll see what happens. And again, guys, if you like this kind of content, don't forget to like and subscribe. And until next time, take care.
