Every year, on average, 11% of the U.S. population between the ages of 20 and 60 suffers some sort of long-term or permanent disability that prevents them from working and earning a paycheck. In fact, 3 out of 10 employees will be disabled for at least 3 months before they retire and for an average of almost 3 years. Car collisions, sports injuries, household accidents, cancer, neurological disorders, depression— there are literally hundreds of conditions that result in a long-term or permanent disability. Of course, you cannot continue to pay an employee while they cannot work, especially if their disability will keep them from working for many months or even years. They might be totally disabled or only partially disabled. It could be permanent or only temporary, but an auto accident or a cancer diagnosis can happen to anyone.
