Ethan explains what a mystery is

Five-year-old Ethan defines a mystery as something lost that you need but didn't see disappear. He explains that finding your mom's car keys or a missing toy counts, but not if you watched it get lost. He loves solving mysteries and once found a water pistol he'd forgotten about.

Hey Ethan, how are you doing? How are you?
Good.
Good morning. You're good? Good. So I also have conversations like this with a 7-year-old, and I'm wondering if you think in a way similar to a 7-year-old. Do you think that your mind is like a 7-year-old's mind, or? You're 5, right? Is that right?
Uh, yeah, like—
That's right? Okay. Do you think a 5-year-old thinks the same way a 7-year-old does?
Yeah, I think so.
Okay, so what I was going to ask her about is what is a mystery? What do you think? What is a mystery? What counts as a mystery?
It's when something can't be found.
So your, your voice is a little bit shaky. So it's something when something isn't really found, is that what you said?
And when something can't be found.
Just repeat because I didn't hear you very well. Oh, when something can't be found. Excellent, thank you. That's much better. Okay, so when something can't be found. So can you think of any examples of a mystery?
Not many, but I can think of one thing, try to find that missing thing.
So suppose you're missing a toy or missing a tool. Are those examples of mysteries?
Yes, but it only is a mystery if you like really need it, and it's a mystery like if it's lost and you didn't see how it was lost. If you see how it's lost, it's not a mystery.
I see. So before we can call it a mystery, you have to look for the toy or look for the tool and it's not where you expect it and you can't figure out why it's not there. Is that right?
Yeah, that's right.
Okay. How about detective stories? Have you, do you know what a detective story is? Have you ever either heard or watched a detective story?
Is. I mean, I've watched a couple of James Bond movies with Dad.
Okay, are there any mysteries in those?
Yes.
What are the mysteries in a James Bond movie? There's Or sometimes he can't find a toy?
In the first one, there's like some gold he needs to find and passes it to his friend.
I see. And so the mystery is— so the mystery is where is the gold and how does he get it, is that right?
Yeah. And then he doesn't know if friend is a bad guy and throws it to his friend and the friend catches it and escapes.
Got it. So in those mysteries, does he have to figure things out with his mind?
Yes.
And when you can't find a toy or you can't find a tool, do you have to figure things out with your mind?
I mean, yeah.
Have you ever had a toy that was missing and then you figured out the mystery of where it actually was?
Yeah, yeah, like my water pistols, like my water pistol. I haven't known where that is in years, but now today I have it.
So your water pistol was missing and then you found it?
Yeah, and I have it today because I found it.
Did you find it by figuring it out or is it just plain lucky?
It was like, I think I just got really lucky one day and just looked down and I saw my water pistol.
Got it. Did you ever help your mom or dad find something that they couldn't find?
Yeah, I helped my mom find, try to find the keys to a car, but we couldn't, so we just took the Tahoe.
Got it, got it. Well, do you like solving mysteries?
Yeah.
Why do you like solving mysteries?
They're kind of fun, actually.
They are? Okay, well, I want you to think about solving mysteries, and I'm gonna keep it short this morning and let you go have fun today. What are you gonna do today?
Pick up Pokémon Sword and Shield. Pick up Pokémon Sword and Shield.
All right, that sounds like a lot. So have a great day and maybe we'll talk next week, okay?
Okay.
Bye, Ethan. Bye.
