Ethan on happy and sad

An adult asks a child named Ethan what makes him happy and sad. Ethan says happy feels like "Whee!" and that sad happens when his friend Beckett misses music class. They talk about how different things make different people happy, and that some people are mostly happy while others are mostly sad.

Hello.
Oops.
Eason, how are you?
Good.
Good? You having a good day so far?
Yep.
Okay. So I was wondering about the word confidence and the idea of confidence. Do you know what confidence means? No. No? Okay, in which case, let's go for a different word. How about the word happy? What does the word happy mean?
Like. It means like. Whee!
Do you know the word happy? Have you used it? Do you ever say somebody's happy?
Yeah, I have.
So what are people like when they're happy?
They aren't sad.
Okay, that makes sense. And what is sad? What's an example of what people are like when they're sad?
It's when you're happy.
Okay. What kinds of things make you happy?
Mmm, mostly everything except when I get stuff taken away.
Mostly everything except when you get stuff taken away. What kinds of things make you sad?
Um, if my friend Beckett doesn't come to my music class, that makes me sad.
Oh, that makes sense.
That's all I can think of, really, right now.
Okay, that's fine. So do you think all people are sometimes happy and sometimes sad, or do you think some people are mostly happy or some people are mostly sad?
Some people are mostly happy and some people are mostly sad. Some people are mostly happy. But some people are, but very rarely people are sad.
So do you think that the same things make everybody happy and the same things make everybody sad? Or do different things make some people happy and different things make some people sad?
The one you, um, some things make people happy and some things make people sad.
Why do you think, why do you think different people are made happy by different things?
I just guess so, but um, let's see here. What was that question again?
No problem, no problem. So the question again is, Why do some people— why are some people made happy by one kind of thing and other people are made happy by a different kind of thing?
Oh, because like, it's kind of— it's a hard question. I might need to think about it for a little. In the next call, if I know the question, I'll tell you. Okay, because that's a tough one.
It is a tough one. It is a tough one. No, I, I think people are complicated. Do you think people are complicated?
I don't know what that means.
Okay, no problem. Um, do you know what it means to be simple? Have you ever done a puzzle? Do you have any puzzles you put together?
Um, my grandma put puzzles together sometimes.
So some puzzles are really, really easy and some puzzles are hard. Does that sound right, that some puzzles are easy and some puzzles are hard?
Yeah.
So I would say an easy puzzle is a simple puzzle and a hard puzzle is a complicated one. So to be complicated is to be like a difficult puzzle. Does that make sense?
Yeah.
So that's why I'm saying people are like a complicated puzzle. So when you say you have to think about what makes different people happy, I think, oh, that's a little bit like people are a complicated puzzle. Does it make sense that people are like a complicated puzzle?
Yeah.
Okay. In which case, I will let you think about, um, what, why some people are made happy by some things and some people are made sad by other things. And in a future call, maybe you will have figured it out. Does that sound good?
Yeah.
Okay. I hope you have a happy day. Um, talk to you next week. Adiós.
