In this episode of the One of a Kind Financial Show Daily, host Mike Milligan (joined by co‑host Gary Nolan) uses the post‑career business successes of five sports Hall of Famers to illustrate core financial‑planning principles. The segment opens with Mike announcing his own induction into a business‑owner Hall of Fame, establishing the personal relevance of the topic. He then profiles Michael Jordan, highlighting how Jordan’s control of his image and the equity stake in the Jordan Brand, plus ownership of the Charlotte Hornets, demonstrate the power of personal branding and equity ownership. Next, Magic Johnson’s story is examined: after his basketball career and a public HIV diagnosis, Johnson built a diversified portfolio focused on community‑oriented ventures, most notably Equitrust, an insurance company serving under‑represented markets, illustrating purpose‑driven diversification and aligning investments with values. The discussion moves to Tiger Woods, whose endorsement, licensing, and business diversification created multiple income streams that insulated his wealth during personal and injury‑related setbacks, underscoring resilience, risk management, and the importance of diversified cash flow. Mike then briefly covers two legendary golfers—Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer—who turned their names into enduring revenue sources through drink licensing, golf‑course design, apparel lines, and charitable foundations, showing how legacy branding can generate ongoing wealth. Throughout, Mike ties these case studies to the “One of a Kind Financial Plan,” a client‑focused strategy that mirrors the athletes’ approaches: employing professional advisors for tax and retirement planning, building diversified investment portfolios, securing long‑term care and legacy insurance, and tailoring plans to each individual’s unique goals. The episode concludes with calls to action (phone number, text “IDEAS”), a compliance disclaimer outlining Mike’s role as a Certified Financial Planner with Advisory Alpha LLC and Ideas by Mike, and a reminder that the content is informational, not personalized advice.

Be one of a kind with Mike's Plan.
Welcome to the One of a Kind Financial Show Daily with your host, Mike Milligan. After a one-week hiatus where I was enjoying some much-needed R&R, we are back with a full week of episodes this week highlighting recent segments from the One of a Kind Financial Show, the radio show hosted by Gary Nolan and myself that airs in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Midland, and everywhere across the World Wide Web. Recently on that show, we talked about Hall of Famers. Hall of Famers that not only have excelled on the court, on the field, or on the golf course, but also have made a lasting impact through their business endeavors and charitable efforts outside of those arenas. These people mostly have already retired or are at the end of their career. I want you to enjoy this. This segment holds a very special meaning to me because today in Mexico with a Surrounded by over 200 industry professionals. I am being inducted into a very special Hall of Fame myself, a group of 13 business owners around the country who have excelled in serving clients in unique ways. This Hall of Fame dates back to 2013, and it's gonna be very special to be one of the few people in the country inducted in that. If you wanna know more about that induction, obviously reach out to me. Gary will give that number here on the show next.
Enjoy this segment.
Getting into the Sports Hall of Fame is one of the greatest honors for athletes. The requirements are stringent and highly competitive. For most major sports, candidates must be retired not only for, for several years, like at least 4 or 5 years, and they demonstrated excellence and sportsmanship during their careers. Achievements, impact on the sport, upholding the highest ethical standards are critical. Enshrinement comes with a rigorous nomination process and voting process by a select committee, ensuring the most iconic and deserving figures are included. Today we're going to discuss 5 Hall of Famers who just don't shine during their careers but turn their success into business fortunes. First up is Michael Jordan, a legendary basketball icon known wide world for his dominance on the court. Well, let's talk about Mike.
Well, man, legendary Chicago Bull. Later, he played at Washington at the end of his career after coming back, but it just wasn't built on talent. This guy was fueled by relentless preparation, competitiveness, and the vision to control his own image. I mean, think about it. I mean, the Air Man, that little replica of Michael Jordan going up to dunk, right, is on Nike apparel and has made him a billionaire. Because the desire to control his own image created one of the biggest equity stakes that Nike has ever given away before, leading to the Jordan Brand's explosive growth. It's a model case for focusing on ownership and scalable investments. So for financial planning though, Michael's story highlights the value of equity, personal branding, and working with expert advisors to protect and grow wealth. He later even went on, right? This is after his playing days, to own the Charlotte Hornets and broaden endorsements even further. See, the lesson that Michael Jordan teaches us is to know your unique value, build smart partnerships, and prioritize equity-building moves that pay off throughout life, including into retirement.
Yeah, no question about that. Next, Magic Johnson, another basketball great who changed the game and went on to change the business landscape too.
Man, he's done more than just that, right? I'll never forget in 1989, Gary, when he announced that he was HIV positive.
Yes, I remember that.
At that time, and at that time, that was a death sentence in the United States.
Yeah, it was.
And here he is, uh, 36 years later, still living and thriving at the same time. See, he's the gold standard for turning, turning fame into diversified wealth. After basketball, when his career was cut short, and then he came back a little bit later to be a part of that Dream Team in 1992, he got into sectors that mattered to his community, urban renewal, movie theaters, and more. He just didn't diversify his holdings. He diversified with purpose, which is a pillar of sound financial planning. By creating unique value and investing where others overlooked, he only He not only generated wealth, but made a positive impact. His story reminds us all that financial planning isn't just numbers. It's aligning investments with your values, actively seeking opportunity, and thinking creatively. You know, one of the interesting things about Magic Johnson, Gary, is he went out with purpose and said, you know, the minority community doesn't have a voice in the insurance industry. Do you know that Magic Johnson Enterprises right now?
No.
owns an insurance company.
I didn't know that.
He owns Equitrust, which is a rated financial institution that's one of the best in providing opportunities for folks with guaranteed income, legacy benefits on growth that will never be taxed again. Magic Johnson is a true success story from the basketball court To real-world afterlife. After, after, uh, after basketball.
The show is the one-of-a-kind financial show with Mike Milligan. I'm Gary Nolan, your consumer advocate. We're talking about superstars, Hall of Famers today, and how it relates to the financial world. 800-748-1838. 800-748-1838. That's the number to call to get on Mike's calendar, get you all set up with that comprehensive plan. There's no cost, there's no obligation. Or you could text the word ideas to 600-700. Ideas to 600-700. Next up in golf, Tiger Woods revolutionized the sports with his incredible talent and focus. Tiger Woods.
Oh my gosh, man. What a— what is— you know, we're not going to talk about his off-the-course life, but boy, he elevated golf, right? It was a weekend with the Masters, the US Open, the British Open, the PGA Championship became must-watch weekend golf tournaments when Tiger Woods was wearing that red shirt on Sunday. He elevated this field through consistency, precision, and adaptability. Qualities that also define great financial planning. His approach though, to his off-the-course work through endorsements, licensing, and business diversification resulted in multiple robust income streams. His response to adversity though, is an example of why resilience and risk management are essential for anyone planning their financial future. See, when he went through all of that image-related stuff through a divorce, through a lot of bad publicity that came out, he didn't lose his wealth like so many other people because he had diversified his income streams away from golf. Even when injuries have prevented him the last couple of years, he is still thriving, making millions and millions of dollars a year through proper guaranteed income solutions outside of his working career.
You know, Mike, we're kind of up against the clock. We have 2 more to go through. I suggest that we save these 2 for the next segment, but let's talk about the One of a Kind Financial Plan first.
That's great because they were also golfers and we'd always pick them up at a different time. But see, Hall of Famers can teach us that even though you're great, you're at the top of your career in your job, when it comes to retirement, you need to create diversified paths. That's what the One of a Kind Financial Plan does. I can look at, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Tiger Woods and see the one-of-a-kind financial plan and what they've done. See, they focused on having advisors around them that helped them with tax planning, that helped them with retirement income planning when they were no longer working on the court or on the golf course. They created an investment strategy that was broadly diversified. And they all have long-term care and life insurance or legacy plays in place for themselves. When they're going so money could go to the next generation properly. See, just like these guys are Hall of Famers, you are unique. You are one of a kind. And like in your life, we need to build a one of a kind financial plan so that you can retire peacefully and live the life that is uniquely yours.
Thank you, Gary, for also passing this on the radio show as opposed to bringing more of the radio show on. I just want to tell you about the last 2 Hall of Famers who we didn't get to. On that segment of the radio show, but I think are very important. They are Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer were both great golfers who were linked together. Get the dad joke there? They were linked together as golfing pros who battled each other from time to time on the course, but took very different approaches after retirement to continuing to build wealth. Arnold Palmer had a famous drink. Named after him, lemonade and tea mixed together, that my kids enjoyed many a times at the Olive Garden and many other places. He also continued many charitable endeavors, but also had branded apparel that was tied to him. He also created golf courses and has a tournament every year dedicated to his memory and his charities. Well, Jack Nicklaus did something similar, yet also different. Jack Nicklaus didn't have a drink named after him, but became one of the best golf designers of courses around the country. And even today, he has golf clubs, that are named after him that he's licensed and many others. See, both of them are iconic figures in an individual golf event where, you know, or golf tournaments where they're out competing against each other but not part of a team. But boy, when they left the course, they built mega fortunes from drink licensing, golf course design, apparel, and many other business endeavors. Thanks again today for listening to the One of a Kind Financial Show Daily. Again, if you wanna reach out to us and connect with us, Remember the number that Gary gave you, but also you could text the word ideas, I-D-E-A-S, to 600-700.
