How to Buy Out Your "Silent Tax Partner" Before RMDs Hit

CFP Mike Milligan explains why Nvidia's doubled AI chip forecast matters beyond the stock itself, then reframes required minimum distributions as a negotiation with the IRS rather than a tax catastrophe. His new book, The Retirement Handshake, treats RMDs as a partnership you can buy out strategically.

Nvidia says it will sell twice as many AI chips next year. The market just posted a post-Fed announcement bounce. And in 10 days, I turn 50 years old. Let's go. I'm Mike Milligan, Certified Financial Planning Professional and founder of One Oak Financial. This is the One of a Kind Financial Show Daily. Educate, coach, plan is my motto. Never miss a moment.

24 hours after the Fed raised rates, the market changed its mind about being scared. The ETF SPY that represents the S&P 500 up 1.1%. DIA, the ETF that represents the Dow Jones Industrial Average, up 0.6%. The NASDAQ Composite closed up 1.7% with QQQ also Representing that upswing. And then the Russell 2000 up half a percent. And the VIX, the volatility index, it collapsed. It closed at 15.44 from 17.71 the day before, down nearly 13% on the session. That is the fear index telling you the traders who were nervous into the Fed meeting are not nervous today. The tech, tech, tech names led, small caps followed, fear dropped. That is a textbook post-Fed relief rally. That— this is why we do not trade around Fed meetings. If you sold Wednesday afternoon on the hike, you missed Thursday's bounce. The written one-of-a-kind financial plan does not care what the tape did on any single Wednesday. The written plan cared about the direction of rates for the next 12 months and how that impacts you and the way you want to live your one-of-a-kind life.

Now here's the reason that tech ran yesterday. Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, spoke at a summit in Scotland yesterday with the UK's King Charles III alongside leaders from Google DeepMind, OpenAI, and Anthropic. He said one sentence that moved the whole tape for the whole day. Quote, I expect Nvidia to sell twice as many chips next year as we do this year. End quote. Think about that. Twice as many chips. Not twice as much revenue. Twice as many units. That is a supply forecast, not a marketing line. Nvidia already told the market it expected 70% growth in fiscal year ending January 2028, roughly $673 billion in revenue. Now the CEO is telling you the unit volume behind that number roughly doubles Nvidia stock closed yesterday at $219.34, up from $213.90, about 2.5%. Market cap now is north of $5.3 trillion. That's one company, $5.3 trillion, larger than the entire economy of India or the United Kingdom. Here's what that really is. This is an OpenAI CapEx story. We followed it all summer on this show, the consumer and AI cap and how the market will continue to move based off the health of those 2. When Nvidia says twice as many chips, somebody has to buy those chips. Somebody has to power them. Somebody has to cool them. Somebody has to build a building around them. That somebody is Microsoft, Google, Meta, Amazon, OpenAI, Oracle, Tesla. Every hyperscaler is committing tens of billions of dollars per quarter to data center buildouts. That is CapEx flowing into Nvidia, to utilities, to industrial construction, to power generation, to natural gas, to nuclear, to cooling systems, to network gear, to real estate. Here's what I do not want you to do. Do not chase Nvidia stock. At $5.3 trillion because he made a statement at a conference in Scotland. Chasing is not planning. Here is what I do want you to do. Look at your written plan, look at your equity allocation, and see what percentage is carrying— what of that allocation, what percent is carrying a weight in large-cap tech. See, you already own this story. If you're— even if you're an index like the S&P 500, those big mega-cap stocks carrying this chip story are a large portion. We talk about that on this show in the form of concentration risk. Don't go over that concentration because of this line. Work around it. Because if your allocation is too defensive right now, you can decide with a coach or a financial advisor whether the plan calls for a rebalance. Up, but what we do not want is a reaction. Rebalancing is part of the plan. Reactions are where people get hurt in equity trading. We're not chasing returns, guys. We're here to build a one-of-a-kind financial plan.

Now let me tell you a story about a book. Just about two weeks ago, the retirement handshake went live on Amazon. A couple days from now, as I mentioned, I'll turn fifty years old. And between the release of that book and my fiftieth birthday, sales have been going going going crazy. I did not write this book for it to go crazy. I wrote it because I got tired of the language. that many financial advisors were giving when it comes around tax planning. Walk down the aisle of any bookstore, scroll the personal tax section, section of Amazon. The language is loud: tax bomb, tax time bomb, tax tsunami, tax hurricane, the IRS divorce, the war on your retirement. I've been in that room. I have written that copy, and I've said it on webinars. I've been on the stage where others have mentioned it. And at some point I stopped and asked a very simple question: has the person calling the tax code a bomb ever been to war? Has the person calling a divorce ever sat with a family through one or lived it in the conference room of an attorney's office and then had to split time over Thanksgiving, Christmas in utter silence where their kids would not speak to them over a period of time? Has the person calling it a hurricane ever lived through one? Because my neighbors in Puerto Rico have. 2 to 4 weeks without power, then 2 more. A roof on the neighbor's lawn See, that's a hurricane. Your required minimum distribution is not a hurricane. It arrives on a schedule, in writing, from a partner you can plan against. So what is it actually? It's a partnership, a quiet one, written in a language you were never taught. The day you signed your 401 enrollment form, you took on a business partner. Nobody handed you a partnership agreement. Nobody sent you a welcome letter. But that's exactly what happened. Every dollar you defer into a traditional 401, 403, 457, TSP, or IRA is a dollar the two of you own together. You put up the labor and the discipline. Your partner put up the tax break. In exchange, your partner gets to set the tax rate later. On a schedule and at a percentage you cannot know in place. That partner is the Internal Revenue Service. And that agreement, first founded in '74, amended in 1978, again in 1986 and 1997, again in— twice between 2000 and 2010, again in 2019, and again in 2023. The pattern of your partner is in the paperwork. For 30 or 40 years, that partnership has worked beautifully though for you. You defer, the market compounds, the balance grows. Then the paycheck stops and everything about the arrangement changes at once. The silent partner is no longer silent any longer. See, the partner was patient. And here's the piece most retirees never realize. The partnership has always had rules. They are in writing, they are published, they are free to read, and the partner has always been willing to be bought out on your terms during a specific window of years if you show up and use those rules. The Retirement Handshake is my playbook for that window. It's not a scare book. It's not one to elicit an emotional response for something that has traumatized someone in the past. It is a straightforward approach. It's a handshake book. See, money is a tool. It's not a battlefield. The book is on Amazon right now, paperback and Kindle. I wrote it for the American who signed a form the first day of a job and did not read every word on that form. That's most of us.
