Life After the 9-to-5: Conquering Unstructured Time

In this episode of the One of a Kind Financial Show Daily, host Mike Milligan and co‑host Gary Nolan discuss the emotional and practical challenges retirees face when the structured routine of a 9‑to‑5 job disappears. They explain how loss of daily rhythm can cause disorientation, boredom, and decision fatigue, which in turn can lead to unnecessary spending and financial stress. The conversation emphasizes the need for a purposeful vision and light‑weight routines—what they call “retirement chi”—to provide meaningful anchors without rigid schedules. Mike outlines the components of the One of a Kind Financial Plan: tax reduction, inflation‑adjusted income, a retirement‑specific investment strategy, long‑term care, and legacy planning, all aligned with a personal purpose. Throughout the segment, promotional calls‑to‑action (phone number 800‑748‑1838, text 600‑700) encourage listeners to schedule a free, no‑obligation consultation, and a legal disclaimer clarifies Mike’s advisory affiliation and the educational nature of the content.

Be one of a kind with Mike's plan.
It's Thursday, and this is the One of a Kind Financial Show Daily with your host, Mike Milligan. You spent a lifetime climbing the ladder. Now you have to make sure it's leaning against the right wall. Well, we recently spoke about that very quote on the One of a Kind Financial Show Daily this past weekend, because every day does feel like a Saturday until it doesn't. Retirement brings freedom, but also confusion, boredom, and drift. In the segment that follows, Gary and I talked about how time structure and why retirement isn't just a financial transition. Enjoy this segment from the One of a Kind Financial Show.
Most people plan financially for retirement, but very few plan emotionally or practically on how their days will actually feel. Now, when the calendar opens up, something unexpected happens— time becomes slippery. Now, in this segment, we're going to explore why structure matters more than people realize and how it affects happiness and spending. So why does retirement feel so disoriented for so many people at first, Mike? Well, what's up with that?
Well, work provides rhythms, deadlines, and social contact. When that disappears, days can blur together. Gary, if everyone, again, was honest with each other and you are retired, there's been many times that you've had to think, what day is it really?
Yes, absolutely.
Because some days are Monday, some days are Thursday, but you just can't remember because you're waking up doing the same thing every day.
Exactly.
You never had that problem when you were working.
No.
If you worked a Monday through Friday day, you knew exactly if it was Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. You knew it.
Yep.
Right? But that's where the disorientation comes in. And so it catches people off guard because they're used to rhythm and structure, and retirement is anything but rhythm and structure.
Absolutely. It's about the same thing every day unless you need to find ways to fill your days with different things that you can do. Am I right?
That's true. That's exactly right.
Is boredom a real retirement risk nobody plans for?
Boredom doesn't always look like boredom. It can look like restlessness, irritability, or unnecessary spending. It could be something as simple as doing the same Sudoku every day or playing solitaire on your phone all the time, and time just gets wasted. Boredom, But boredom will also influence financial decisions. It will. If you're bored and you have nothing to do and you're a natural spender, you'll end up going out to lunch every day or maybe going to buy unnecessary things for the 3rd or 4th time. And it can quickly derail a financial plan unless you provide a vision and a purpose for what your retirement is.
How much freedom can actually create stress? Could that happen?
I mean, if you had unlimited— unlimited choices sound great, but without boundaries, decision fatigue sets in. From what should we do today or should we spend this? A lack of structure increases anxiety instead of reducing it. That's why we advocate in the One of a Kind Financial Plan for people to build a vision for their lives. for their lives and assign a real purpose for what their money can do. Because then the financial plan becomes your vision and your purpose for what retirement is all about.
You know, it's so funny. I'm such a person that goes so much with structure, Mike, you know, up every morning at 6:30, in the shower at 7:30, out the door at 8:05. You know, it's like, it's just, I'm so used to that structure. I wonder what it'll be like when in retirement. It's going to be totally different for me.
Well, unstructured, when you go from structured to unstructured, there's a mental shift in your mind. And it doesn't appear all at once. You don't all of a sudden go from full structured to unstructured. It's creep. Your days all of a sudden become unfulfilled. You end up wasting time on things that you would never spend time on. And, you know, where many of us would retire and have a honey-do list, that honey-do list is not, you know, at least in my life, it's not unlimited. You know, there's finite things to do that my honey could tell me I should be doing.
The show is the One of a Kind Financial Show with Mike Milligan. I'm Gary Nolan, your host. I want to thank you for joining us, spending time with us this weekend. We certainly do appreciate that. I want to get you on the calendar, all set up with that one-of-a-kind financial plan that Mike's going to talk about again in just a couple of minutes.

800-748-1838. The folks at One Oak Financial are standing by ready for your phone call right now. Get on the calendar. Also, you can text ideas to 600-700. So why does retirement change the way people feel about money?
Money used to be replenished by paychecks. It's just that simple. Now it feels finite because you don't consistently have money coming in from work that you do. It just feels like you're going to run out. And so the psychological shift of having work for money to not working using your money is, if you don't explore it, And you just let it happen, it becomes almost a burden. It raises stress, it raises fear, raises anxiety.
Couple of minutes left, Mike. What role does purpose play in satisfying retirement?
Well, purpose doesn't have to mean productivity or work. It can be learning, connection, contributing, or exploring. It's not just about time for money.
So how can retirees create rhythm without rigidity? You want to create that rhythm in your life.
Yeah. The goal isn't a new boss, folks. It's intentional days. It's light routines. It's planned flexibility and it's meaningful anchors. Building a vision for retirement is what we do when we build the one-of-a-kind financial plan. It starts with retirement chi. That's our initial conversation. It's how are you going to spend time in community where you are mentally stimulated? How are you going to focus on your health so it doesn't become a focus? And then what's your impact going to be? Because if you don't have a purpose for what your community health and impact's going to be, Retirement Chi, then you could find yourself floundering and every day could be a Saturday.
Yeah, absolutely, Mike. Well, Tell us a little more about the One of a Kind Financial Plan for our listeners.
I would love to, Gary. One of a Kind Financial Plan is a purposed alignment of what your money is to where you want to go for the rest of your days. It reduces the total amount of tax you pay over your lifetime. It helps you with a retirement income plan that adjusts with inflation. It helps you with an investment plan that is not the same investments you used while you were accumulating money, but it's to make sure that the return of your money is important. A long-term care plan that is used to bring dignity to the rest of your full life, then a legacy plan that says, I love you. We put these plans together for folks because if you don't have a written plan in place, Then the idea of floundering in retirement will bring on more stress, life shortening, and it'll just make you unfulfilled, wanting to go back to work. And we don't want that for any of our listeners. We want you to be able to have something that makes you feel confident and strong about your future self.
This is your chance to benefit from the one-of-a-kind financial plan. Call right now. We have a limited number of availabilities on our calendar this week. And remember, here's the beauty of this whole thing. The consultation is offered at no cost or no obligation.
