In this episode of the One of a Kind Financial Show Daily, host Mike Milligan (joined by co‑host Gary) uses the novelty of Talk Like a Pirate Day and Read an Ebook Day to introduce a free ebook titled Lessons from the Legends. The ebook curates ten historic financial figures, offering concise definitions of key financial concepts (taxes, retirement income, investments, long‑term care, legacy) and a list of essential questions listeners should ask any financial professional. Mike explains the ebook’s purpose: to educate listeners about the “Mount Rushmore of finance” so they can better understand market history and engage more intelligently with advisors. The conversation then spotlights three of the legends featured in the ebook: 1. Benjamin Graham – described as the father of value investing, creator of the “margin of safety” concept, author of The Intelligent Investor, and mentor to Warren Buffett. Graham’s emphasis on buying below intrinsic value to limit downside risk is presented as a timeless foundation for modern value investing. 2. Ray Dalio – founder of Bridgewater Associates, author of Principles: Life and Work, and advocate of diversification, strategic asset mixing, and systematic portfolio rebalancing to manage risk and navigate economic uncertainty. 3. Warren Buffett – the “Oracle of Omaha,” disciple of Graham, who transformed Berkshire Hathaway into a diversified holding company. Buffett’s philosophy centers on investing only in businesses you understand, holding them long‑term, leveraging compounding, and avoiding emotional decisions. Throughout, Mike repeatedly invites listeners to text the word IDEAS to 600‑700 or call 800‑748‑1838 to receive the ebook and schedule a personalized, “one‑of‑a‑kind” financial plan. The episode concludes with a compliance disclaimer clarifying Mike Milligan’s CFP status, the advisory nature of the content, and the separation of investment advice from legal or tax advice. Overall, the episode blends promotional messaging, educational snippets about legendary investors, actionable steps for audience engagement, and regulatory transparency.

Be one of a kind with Mike's Plan. Welcome back to the One of a Kind Financial Show Daily. I'm your host, Mike Milligan. It's Friday, September 19th, and you are one of a kind.
And I believe you deserve a one-of-a-kind financial plan.
But did you know that today is Talk Like a Pirate Day and Read an Ebook Day? So today we can either talk about talk like a pirate for the whole show, arrgh, or we can walk you through one of the ebooks that we have to offer. See, ebooks, right? The whole search of electronic books has changed the face of the game, right? Ever since Amazon joined the ranks of online retailers back in the late 1990s with the mission of being the number one bookseller in the world to now being the total, the number one retailer in the world, the face of books have changed. From the advent of Audible to Kindles to electronic book readers, we now have the ability to pass information faster than others. Well, today we have created a book for, an ebook for you called Lessons from the Legends. This ebook highlights 10 financial legends who have passed on before us in the US but gave key definitions and wisdom to us all. So I wanted to— we, we want to highlight some of those on, uh, or we highlighted those recently on the One of a Kind Financial Show with Gary. And I want you to hear that segment, which you'll also be able to text into us at IDEAS at 600-700. And if you do that off this podcast, we'll make sure you get a copy of that ebook. Again, enjoy our conversation on the Lessons from the Legends.
Legends typically feature heroic figures or remarkable deeds passed through generations via oral storytelling or written accounts and are regarded as significant within a culture, even though some of the details may be exaggerated or unverifiable over time. Now, Mike has authored an ebook. It's called Lessons from the Legends. Now, we're going to talk about this. First of all, what's, what's the vision behind the book, Mike?
Well, there's been— we crafted and curated 10 legends of the industry to be able to take the themes of their life and be able to show you how they apply in the modern financial world we're in now. And so a lot of people just don't know the history of our current financial markets or why firms like Ideas by Mike and the One of a Kind family, why we actually do what we do. And so we want to bring to you some of the the key figures, you know, the Mount Rushmore of, like, finance.
Right.
And then we want to put some key things on a paper that's in this ebook. We've also put, like, a list of definitions around taxes and retirement income and investments and long-term care and legacy that you may not know. But if you have, if you have 3 or 4 pages of, like, what the definition is, it allows you when you meet with me, or you're negotiating with some other financial firm, and it allows you to understand the lingo better. And then ultimately in this ebook, we're giving you a list of questions that you always should be asking, right, of any financial professional. So, so we wrote, we wrote this as a, as something to give our listeners and to give those who follow us either with the Ideas by Mike podcast or in our One Oak family a free tool to be able to educate themselves even more. And Gary, if our listeners here want to copy that ebook, they can literally text in IDEAS, I-D-E-A-S, to 600-700, and we'll, and we'll make sure that we get this book to them.
Terrific. All right, got some famous names on this list, some heavy hitters. Let's talk about some of these legends. The first one is Benjamin Graham.
Okay, so first of all, this is not Benjamin Franklin or or Billy Graham, right? Yeah, that's right. This is somebody totally different. Many people haven't heard of him. He's known as the father of value investing. He introduces the term margin of safety, and he always believes that you buy below intrinsic value to limit downside risk. He authored a book back in 1949 called The Intelligent Investor, and he is The mentor to Warren Buffett. Graham's careful analysis is something that he valued over speculation. His timeless approach remains the foundation today of modern value investing.

Dalio holds a finance degree from Post College and an MBA from Harvard Business School, and he authored the bestselling book Principles: Life and Work, sharing his management and his investment philosophy. He advocates for diversification. Strategically mixing assets and rebalancing portfolios to manage risk and navigate economic uncertainty. Do some of those terms sound familiar to you, Gary?
Yes, absolutely.
Rebalancing, you know, managing risk, navigating. See, he did this, and he did this back in the, in the '70s and the '80s. He, he became one of the most influential figures in finances during the major growth periods And you talk about a guy on Mount Rushmore would be Warren Buffett. Oh yeah. So Warren Buffett, right? We talked about him as being like a disciple of Benjamin Graham earlier, but he was born in 1930. Very soon he's going to be 100 years old out in Omaha, Nebraska. He's called the Oracle of Omaha. He's a legendary American investor known for his value investing approach. He started investing young, but he studied business and investing. And in 1960, took control of a company called Berkshire Hathaway.
Yeah.
Transformed—
Little company.
The little company.
Yeah.
Transformed it into a diverse holding company. Buffett advocates investing only in businesses you truly understand, holding them for the long term, and harnessing the power of compounding. His approach helps avoid emotional decision-making and builds lasting and substantial wealth. You know, his portfolio over the years, for the long time has included Coca-Cola and Bank of America.
He—
they own GEICO Insurance and many, you know, Berkshire Hathaway Realty is part of his portfolio. But one of the most interesting parts about him is he's always been a buy-and-hold guy.
Absolutely. Yes, no question about that. There's— I wish we had more time. There's just a couple of legends. And on that ebook, Mike has, uh, much more for you if you get the ebook that he was talking about. All right, Mike, final thoughts.
