Tax Planning and Debt Management Tips Inspired by Alexander Hamilton

In the inaugural episode of the One of a Kind Financial Show Daily, host Mike Milligan and consumer‑advocate co‑host Gary Nolan use the Broadway hit Hamilton as a narrative framework to deliver personal‑finance guidance. The episode opens with a nod to International Dot Day, framing small, brave actions as the seed of larger financial success. The hosts then walk through four "Hamilton lessons": (1) the importance of diligently paying debts and taxes, drawing a parallel to Alexander Hamilton’s post‑revolutionary plan for the United States to assume state debts and establish national credit; (2) the value of hard work, continual education, and skill investment, illustrated by the “My Shot” motif and the idea of compounding returns; (3) proactive retirement planning and adaptability, referencing George Washington’s decision to step down and the need for a dynamic, personalized financial plan; and (4) intentional legacy planning, highlighted by Eliza Hamilton’s post‑humous impact and the concept of storytelling to preserve one’s name. Throughout, the hosts repeatedly invite listeners to schedule a free, no‑obligation comprehensive financial plan via a phone number and text line. The episode concludes with a compliance disclaimer outlining the advisory status of Mike Milligan, the limits of the information provided, and a reminder to consult tax or legal professionals. The overall tone is conversational and motivational, aiming to inspire listeners to take concrete, historically‑informed steps toward financial security.

Be one of a kind with Mike's plan. In a face shot growth, take a stand.
Welcome to the One of a Kind Financial Show Daily, the inaugural edition. I'm so excited to be here. I'm your host, Mike Milligan. Every day, Monday through Friday, we are going to give you something happening for this day to lighten the mood, but also to help you plan a better retirement. Because I believe everybody is one of a kind and they deserve a one of a kind financial plan. So here we are, Monday, September 15th. Did you know that today is International Dot Day and is celebrated around the world and was inspired by Peter H. Reynolds' book, The Dot? The story centers on a teacher encouraging a hesitant student to make her mark, literally, with a single dot. That small act of bravery grows into a journey of creativity, self-confidence, and empowerment as the main character discovers her own artistic voice and inspires others to do the same. Millions of children and adults around the world join International Dot Day, daring themselves and each other to make a mark and see where it takes you. It's a vibrant example of hope, resilience, and the power of believing in yourself, showing how one small step can ripple out and inspire countless lives to be bold and kind. This day proves that hope and bravery aren't reserved for heroes and storybooks. They're choices each of us can make, turning just a dot into a masterpiece of possibility. Recently on the One of a Kind Financial Show, Gary and I discussed Alexander Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and the play Hamilton. See how we connect the dots on Hamilton and money next.
Let's dive into our next segment. Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote and produced and starred in the Broadway hit musical Hamilton, a tale of life of Alexander Hamilton, who created the modern financial system of the US. Now, the musical just celebrated 10 years on Broadway, has drawn over 4.6 million guests to the Broadway theater. It's also coming to a theater soon. The show has 4 lessons about taxes, retirement, income, and legacy. Going to review these with Mike. Here's the first one: be diligent about paying your debts and taxes.
Well, I'm excited to do this episode, or this, this little, uh, this little segment right here, because I— the Broadway show Hamilton gives me joy, right? And it's not everybody's cup of tea. But boy, these songs are memorable, right? And so—
They really are.
So when it comes to debts and taxes, there's a— in Act 2, there's this Cabinet Battle 1 where Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson are going at each other, right? So we're after the Revolutionary War, America's forming, and Hamilton argues for the federal government to assume state debts and establish a sound financial footing for the young nation. His plan called for collective responsibility. So the whole, the whole union, right? Not just one state. It called for fair taxation and the management of public finances to establish national creditworthiness.
Hmm.
Well, the lesson there is that if we understand our personal tax obligations and the importance of paying off our debts, and it allows us to manage taxes effectively. Ensures long-term financial health and opens up opportunities, just as Hamilton's financial strategies helped the country gain credibility.
Embrace hard work and education for financial security, Mike.
Oh my gosh. And that's in a few of the opening scenes there. Hamilton and his compadres, this is back in Act 1, start saying, he starts talking about, I am not throwing away my shot. It's the turn. The song was My Shot.
Yes.
And Hamilton and His Friends highlights the highlight rising above their circumstances, because they didn't come from anybody. Alexander Hamilton came in on a ship from St. Kitts down in the Virgin Islands. He was not on the island before the Revolution. And so through ambition, hard work, and continual learning, he rose above where his station was in life. And there are many people that are listening to this show, right, who are first-generation wealthy, right? You did not throw away your shot. You worked hard, you built a business, you, you know, you, you, you got married, you had kids, you invested in this community and you achieved financial independence. And now you may be close to retirement or at retirement, and now you're looking for security and it, and that security. Now, you cannot lax now because the security you need in retirement still requires hard work, continual learning, and making the most of your opportunities. And so now what that scene, my shot from the show teaches us is that you've got to invest in your skills. The payoff grows over time, much like compounding return.
Absolutely. The show is the one-of-a-kind financial show with Mike Milligan. I'm Gary Nolan, your consumer advocate. Mike is with Ideas by Mike. I want you to get on Mike's calendar, get you all set up with that comprehensive plan. There's no cost. There's no obligation. 800-748-1838. 800-748-1838. Or text ideas to 600-700. Plan and adapt for retirement. What do we mean by that?
Okay, so Alexander Hamilton's work ethic has been characterized as nonstop. That's one of the songs in there. And then George Washington, who's also a central figure, obviously, in the creation of our country, in this play, he sings a song in this— the actors sing a song called Yep, I know the song. Both very moving songs, right? And they illustrate both the value of adaptability and knowing when to step away. See, what George Washington really did there is he retired. That's what he did. And so he built this country, right, through battle, through work. And he said, I want to live under my own vine and fig tree, right? That's part of that song, One Last Time. And so you have to be proactive about planning for retirement, anticipate that circumstances may change and adapt your financial plan when necessary. That's why we have a dynamic element to the one-of-a-kind financial plan. See, succession planning and preparation, both for leaders and individuals, ensure smooth transitions and fulfillment in your retirement years. And one of the leaders that many people need in their retirement is a financial planner they trust, right? George Washington trusted Alexander Hamilton. That's why he made him his number 2 to help build the country. A lot of people that we meet with, don't have a number 2 beside them. And so your plan and the adaption for retirement means that you need to find somebody like us to be able to help your planning process.
Right. I'm going to give that phone number again in just a couple of minutes. Think about your legacy and who will tell your story, Mike.
All right. So the final song in this is like, it's one of the best endings to— this is why this has so much critical acclaim, right? This song at the end, right, where Eliza, which is Alexander Hamilton's wife, comes out and says, That's who tells the story. She actually lived 50 years past Alexander Hamilton's life, never remarried. She created an impact. She built orphanages in New York City. She funded the Washington Monument. So this final story reflects Hamilton's legacy and how he's remembered, emphasizing the importance of intentional legacy planning. and having somebody to tell your story. Gary, I tell people all the time that your legacy or your death on this earth, I don't want to talk spiritual on this one. I just want to talk facts. Your death on this earth is the day you die and the name, and the last time your name is spoken on this earth. That gap, date of death to date of last spoken, that is your real legacy. And you need people to tell your story. Well, how do you get people to tell your story? Well, you write them down, right? And then you have your family live those stories out, right? You make sure that your loved ones know your story. They know what your history is. I have a client, Nate, who back in 1994, he went to Italy and took a train trip and he made 4 stops. He told his family about that because we built a legacy piece into him. His family went this summer, without telling him to Italy. He just said, we're going over there. They did the same thing, right? They went to the same stops, they took pictures, and he said, he told me in an emotional response to me, it felt like I was there again.
Wow.
Right? They're building a legacy. And so here's the thing, Alexander Hamilton, the show, right, has a lot to do with financial planning. There's a lot of lessons to teach there. And so legacy being one, proper financial planning, tax planning, and retirement income. are major components of it.
Well, Mike, you know, history is a guide for even today. So tell people how exploring history fits into the One of a Kind Financial Plan.
So we all, we all come to a point where we know we need somebody by our side. Our assets may have grown larger than what we can manage ourselves, and we don't know how to turn an asset into income. We're fearful about what the future holds, right? And we need somebody beside our side. So first of all, we need to create a vision for retirement. And part of that vision comes from your history and telling your story to us. When you tell your story to us, we're going to craft that into a written vision for what retirement looks like. Then we're going to build the one-of-a-kind financial plan around taxes, retirement, investment, long-term care, and legacy. See, we do that just like Alexander Hamilton lived a one-of-a-kind life. You do too. And when you have a written vision and a written plan, you can live a one-of-a-kind life.
Better handle on your financial situation. Here's that phone number, 800-748-1838. 800-748-1838 or text ideas to 600-700. You deserve a more confident plan to retire. Want to be stress-free, peace of mind. That's it for today. I'd like to thank everyone for listening. Hope you found the information we presented. We'll have new topics and new questions right here on the One of a Kind Financial Show with Mike Milligan. Mike, a pleasure as always, my friend. Take care.
