Why the best financial plans aren't rigid | The Importance of Adaptation

In this episode of the One of a Kind Financial Show Daily, host Mike Milligan and co‑host Gary Nolan celebrate the 50th anniversary of Good Morning America (GMA) and extract five timeless principles from the show’s longevity that they argue apply directly to personal financial planning. They discuss how GMA’s consistency, ability to turn setbacks into strength, focus on purpose over pure numbers, commitment to continual learning and adaptability, and its emphasis on the bigger picture (health, character, legacy) provide a model for building a dynamic, “One of a Kind” financial plan. Throughout the conversation they weave in anecdotes and quotes from GMA personalities (Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, Michael Strahan, Oprah Winfrey, Billy Graham) to illustrate each principle. The episode includes repeated calls to action (phone number 800‑748‑1838, text “ideas” to 600‑700) and a compliance disclaimer outlining Mike Milligan’s fiduciary status, his affiliation with Advisory Alpha LLC, and the separation of investment advice from tax/legal counsel. The closing jingle reinforces the brand message of a personalized, adaptable financial plan.

Welcome to the One of a Kind Financial Show Daily with your host Mike Milligan. It is Monday, November 3rd, and if you're not a morning television person, you may not know this, but this is very culturally relevant because on this date 50 years ago in 1975, Good Morning America aired For the first time. Let's give a, let's give a shout out to Good Morning America, the folks over at ABC Television, uh, for becoming the pioneers in getting up and getting us inspired every day. Recently on the One of a Kind Financial Show, Gary Nolan and I paid tribute to Good Morning America, and also we took some lessons from 50 years of their on-air television and some famous quotes and people. It just showed how a financial plan can emulate the success that Good Morning America has. Enjoy that segment now.
He's Mike Milligan. I'm Gary Nolan. The show is the One of a Kind Financial Show. I want to thank you for joining us. Mike has been doing this for quite a while, 26 years experience. Mike is also fiduciary, very important distinction when you're looking for a financial advisor, and he's helped hundreds of clients achieve their financial retirement goals. Well, get this, it's hard to believe it happened November 3rd, 1975, America woke up to a brand new show, a television show become part of our mornings for the next 50 years. American Morning— Good Morning America hit the airwaves with David Hartman and Nancy DeSalle. Now I remember David Hartman, can't say I remember Nancy, I'm sorry. And for millions of people, it just wasn't news and headlines, it was a connection, comfort, and optimism before the day began. So over 5 decades, GMA has featured everyone from presidents to pop stars, All through the year, keeping it very consistent, a positive presence day after day, year after year. Mike, it's kind of staying power. It just doesn't happen in television or in financial life either. So why do you think Good Morning America struck a chord with so many people for 50 years straight, Mike?
Man, that's a good question, Gary. Uh, you know, Good Morning America found the perfect formula from the start. It wasn't just about giving information. It was about creating relationships and routine. Uh, viewers invited it into their lives. So I mean, think about it, every morning, uh, I mean, I remember it like just as a kid, like I would wake up before I go to school and I have a bowl of Cheerios, or, uh, Honeycombs is what I really like. Honeycombs.
Oh yeah, I remember those.
But I would, I would have that and it would be on the TV in the kitchen there. And, uh, you would, you would see things, you would have honesty and energy and hope and You know, it was also— I can remember watching, uh, um, on September 11th, 2001, being tuned in to Good Morning America as the planes were striking and see that, you know, Good Morning America stayed on for all day. Those anchors stayed on. But, you know, over the years, people like Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos and Michael Strahan made the world feel a little more human. before the chaos of the day began. That's why it stuck. It became a comforting constant in an unprecedented world.
Yeah. And look at the guest list they have— Oprah Winfrey, Billy Graham, late Robin Williams. It's like a who's who of culture and inspiration. So let me ask you this: what made Good Morning America more than just a morning show? What do you think the reason was for that?
I think it's authenticity. They took news and mixed it with heart. When tragedy struck, They didn't hide emotion. When joy showed up, they leaned into it. Remember Robin Roberts' line after her cancer battle? Make your mess your message. That's what she said. And, uh, that spirit of vulnerability and resilience transformed the show into something people could believe in. You know, GMA has always reminded us that life's not just about headlines, it's about humanity. And that's a message that resonates far beyond television.
Beautifully said, Mike. So the last question is, does Morning America's longevity and consistency relate to good financial planning? What do you think?
Well, there's a direct question. Uh, GMA has lasted half a century because it's built on 5 timeless principles, and those principles apply to financial success. So let's walk through them. Uh, the first one is like consistency wins the day. Uh, Michael Strahan once said, you You won't know how good you feel every day until you try. That's amazing. You know, in financial planning, it's not about perfection. It's about consistent effort, small steps over decades. So consistency wins the day. The second one is turn setbacks into strength. Robert Roberts taught us life is not so much what you accomplish as what you overcome. Just like she overcame cancer on live TV, investors need resilience when markets and life throw curveballs at you.
800-748-1838, 800-748-1838, or text the word ideas to 600-700. We talked about consistency wins the day, turn setbacks into strength. What's the third one?
It's to, it's to define success beyond numbers. Uh, when Oprah Winfrey was on the show, she reminded viewers, your real power comes from your presence, not your position. I mean, that's, that's like a true— that's, that's so true, right? True wealth isn't in the account balance, it's in how confidently and peacefully you live. And we, you know, that, that type of like retirement success is something we want like our listeners to feel because I've seen people with $300,000 or $400,000 of investment assets with guaranteed income living their best life, where there's people with, uh, you know, $10 or $20 million that are struggling to go out and live life daily. And so that— so don't define your success by the numbers. Go beyond the numbers to see success. Uh, hey, by the By the way, Gary, have you ever— you know, people, the opposite of success is failure, you know, right?
Of course.
You know what the— do you know what the definition of failure is?
Uh, not being able to succeed or something along those lines, I would say.
That's it. It's 3 words. It's lack of success. There's, there's, there's, there's nothing so— you know, we often talk about success in terms, or in terms of like the failures we've had in our life, but like if you, if you define success by your numbers You know, you're ultimately in the end probably going to be a failure because you didn't have experiences. You're not going to have a true legacy. You're going to have a dollar in the amount, but you're not going to have a true legacy. The 4th thing that like Good Morning America has taught us is to keep learning and be adaptive. Uh, George Clooney once said on GMA, you learn nothing from success, you learn from what goes wrong.
Absolutely.
There's the failure again. The best financial plans aren't rigid. Let me say that part again, folks, and I want you to hear this. The best financial plans aren't rigid. They evolve just like life does. That sounds like the One of a Kind Financial Plan to me, right?
Yeah.
The One of a Kind Financial Plan is dynamic. It is not rigid. It wants you to live a one of a kind life. And then here's my favorite one of like what Good Morning America has taught us, taught us. It's taught us to see the bigger picture. Billy Graham reminded audience decades ago, when wealth is lost, nothing is lost. When health is lost, something is lost. When character is lost, all is lost.
Mike, tell us about the One of a Kind Financial Plan. We have about a minute left.
