Furnace blower removal

How to remove and clean a furnace blower. Remove two front screws, pull out the motor carefully, brush the dusty fins while vacuuming, then inspect the heat exchanger for rust before reassembling.

Okay guys, so there's your squirrel cage disconnected from the housing. You see I undid the screws that hold it to the top. It's just 2 screws at the front. I made sure that because the filter's new, I just wrote today's date on the filter. Now I'm going to go ahead and make sure that I have everything ready to go. One thing I have is space to work, which by the way, found this kneeling pad at United Supply, um, or United Refrigeration Supply. It's a game changer. Uh, I know when we're younger sometimes we don't think about things like our knees, but man, you only get one set, so protect them. But, um, yeah, this— the motor just pulls right out and we can hang our control board and everything off to the side carefully. Uh, you do— again, I want to stress carefully. We don't want to break any wires. We've got the actual Uh, wires from the fan motor off to the side here. So we're gonna make sure that we don't pinch anything. We're just gonna simply pull the motor out. Um, and if you look at those fins, yeah, they're pretty good and dusty. So I'd venture to guess that this motor hasn't been cooled for quite a while. So what I like to do, um, provided it's not so bad that it needs to be taken out and hosed off, which that is an option. But again, I want to have as few steps as possible. But what I like to do is simply take my brush like this and run it through the coil— the, excuse me, the fins. But if you see, there's a lot of dust being picked up. So what I'll do is while I'm brushing— I won't be able to do it because I only have 2 hands, uh, but I'll demonstrate. Is I'll hold my vacuum cleaner here in the fan shroud right by my brush. So as I'm brushing, that dust gets sucked right into the vacuum cleaner and I'm not breathing it in. The other thing is, you know, while you got everything out, make sure you vacuum out the inside of the furnace. And then you can take a quick look up. Got a clamshell style heat exchanger. What Which, you know, older furnace, hardly any rust there. A few speckles, not too bad. Um, I'm gonna actually stick my head in here and, and look a little more intently after I make this video, but I just wanted to show you guys. It's real quick, it only takes 2 seconds. And then there's the tracks that the fan shroud or squirrel cage slides into. So that's all you gotta do when you're done is just slide it right back in place in reverse order. So yeah, so I'm gonna go ahead and get this done. Thank you guys for watching, and as always, if you have suggestions for other topics, uh, for new techs and aspiring techs, feel free to let me know in the messages and give me a like on the video. Very much appreciated. Thanks, have a good day out there, guys.
