Find Your Perfect Mentor: Tips for Networking Success

Find a mentor by joining a community in your field, then ask specifically for what you want to learn. Be concrete: PowerPoint design, content marketing, LinkedIn branding. Check your existing network first for people already doing what you want to do.
If you had to recommend for anyone who is looking to either find a mentor or mentor others, what would you recommend?
I know there's your, your experience is very specific to, or more specific to sales. But speaking broadly, what advice would you have?
I would say find your community. Whatever your community is, whether it's manufacturing or it's sales or it's customer success, whatever your specific branch is. Find a community that speaks to that. And then when you're in the community, I have found that a lot of communities have a mentoring aspect. So you can just put it out there like a chat, a Slack channel, whatever, and be like, hey, I'm interested in finding a mentor on X. And I would be specific, not broad. Like, I just want a mentor because then mentors have no idea what you want and they're not necessarily going to volunteer. But if you say, hey, I specifically want to learn how to do a PowerPoint, Or, hey Carol, I want to learn how to do content marketing. I'm kind of doing this personal branding thing, and I've heard that LinkedIn can really help with kind of like getting legs on how content marketing works. Would you be able to teach me X? And then you have better buy-in because people feel confident that they can deliver what you want versus like a big random, I need a mentor. Okay. So I think that, that will help. But also Look at people in your own current network that either do the job that you want to do, have the skill that you want to learn, or that you naturally gravitate towards.
