Cellular networks need dense infrastructure on towers and buildings for coverage. LoRaWAN uses unlicensed spectrum, so hardware is cheap and there are no per-message fees, making it ideal for long-range, low-bandwidth devices.

If you were to consider it, let's just say because you look at cellular and you look at LoRaWAN, for instance, on there, they can send data similar distances. We tend to take for granted the fact that there's cell towers all around us, right? If you start looking at any water towers near anything, you'll see that there's cellular receivers typically up on those, same with tall buildings. And we just— you forget, you don't understand or know how many of those receivers exist to allow us to communicate with each other. And ultimately with LoRaWAN, it's building that infrastructure. You can build it out yourself, you can use public networks. There's a lot of different ways to go about it with it on. But as far as from a cost perspective, because you're transmitting in the unlicensed band, you can do LoRaWAN really cheaply because you can buy the hardware, right, and deploy it yourself and pay no data transmission costs at all.
