Results of AI and Adults with Disabilities at Work: Warehouse Example

In this presentation, the speaker describes a project aimed at creating independent, meaningful employment for adults with disabilities, moving beyond token roles at checkout lines. Partnering with Microsoft, the team adapted AI and machine learning technologies used in their warehouses to develop a wearable‑based coaching system. They collected live data on each worker’s speech patterns, communication style, thought processes, math proficiency, walking speed, and the amount of directional guidance required. This data was used to train and continuously retrain models that could provide real‑time, personalized assistance, enabling individuals with autism and Down syndrome to perform manufacturing, packaging, and warehouse tasks autonomously. The initiative proved successful, and the solution was released freely for any organization wishing to improve hiring and inclusion of adults with disabilities.
