Episode 30 : WOW Experience
21 Sept 2018 · 36 min
Mike Stromsoe teaches how to create wow moments that stick with customers and drive referrals. He walks through specific tactics: handwritten notes with the date and weather, surprise gifts like roses in mugs, framed magazine covers, birthday calls, and persona-driven branding like an insurance agent's white coat. The core idea is emotional bank deposits that cost little but feel personal.

Anything worth doing is worth doing with a wow. Wow meaning without words. Enjoy.
Right now we want to talk about delivering wow experiences. Have I told you yet this morning that I'm grateful for you? Good. Not you, her.
I am grateful for you.
Let's talk about wow experiences. I want. Do me a favor. Close your eyes.
Lean your head back a little if you want. Or you can just sit there.
Think about the last time that you were swept off your feet. Think about the last time that somebody or some experience that you had took your breath away.
Think about the last time that you had that little tingling in the back of your head. You know what moment I'm talking about.
Think about.
Why it's important to give those things to other people. Don't open your eyes.
Those are the wow experiences. Those are the wow experiences that contribute emotionally to other people. Okay? So we're going to try to give you some ideas how you can do that, because it's that impact. It's that wow experience. It's that time that you leave people without words.
That can make all the difference and it doesn't take too many of them. So everything that you're doing in your people, in your processes, in your promotion, okay? Hire excellent people, create world class processes and systems and then promote the heck out of it. Okay? And everything that you're doing to promote it, you want to create that wow. You Want to create that viral effect where everybody's gonna want to look at it, okay? It's gonna stop them from what they're doing. It's like a really good headline. That good headline that will stop you in your tracks. You've got to look at it more, okay? So wow is page 221. Without words.
Without word. But to wow people, you must differentiate yourself, okay? Which means you must do something unconventional or innovative or, in the words of the back of our new shirts, non conforming.
Don't conform. Be different. Do what everybody else is not willing to do. There's a sign back there, that black one by the water table on this side, it says, if you're willing to do what other people aren't willing to do, you will get things that other people can't have. Don't conform.
You got to do it, okay? Do something unconventional. I ran into Roger this morning. We were getting ready this morning, and padre goes, nice shoes. Thank you, Daniel. By the way, recommendation of Mr. Daniel Goff.
And he said, you know, I ran into some people at an event who were unconventional like that. Got it. Okay. Whatever it might be, whatever suits your personality. You know, I do this. I love my country. I love freedom. I love the fact that I can get up in the morning and I have absolutely no limits. I can believe whatever I want to believe. I can pretty much do whatever I want to do as long as I follow the law.
What a great place to be. There's a lot of people in this world that do not have that.
So use it.
Use it and don't conform. Anyway, he went on to tell me, he said, you know, it's funny to me when I see that kind of thing. It seems to be the thing that people just look at that, look at that, look at that. They don't look at anything else. Why? Because it's different.
Because some people are willing to do things that other people aren't. Like that hat from our friends at i80 over there, okay? They've got this thing going on in their branding process, and it's completely different than anybody else. They're not conforming, but they're what happens when you don't conform. You win. You stand out.
You're the one that. You're the, you know, white, white, white, bright pink one. White, white, white. Okay? You're the one that everybody's recognizing. You know, case in point, I have this Persona that I've created through our marketing programs called the insurance stock. It was born in 2009. I was sitting in A seat, just like all of you are learning to become more. And I went outside in the hall, and they had a vendor out there like Balance staff. I didn't know them. This was a long time ago. He was taking photos. He said, hey, three photos for $99, I gave you a photo in a money jacket. I can take a photo of you in a doctor's coat. I can take a photo of you in a straight jacket. You know, don't be imprisoned by your current business situation or whatever your messaging want to be, right? So I said, oh, I'll take them. So I got three photos, and I got home, and I said, sure. In stock.
So I created prescription pads. I bought a white coat, about three sets of scrubs. AW's family member is a nurse. I got a real stethoscope, and on I wrapped my car, and on and on and on. Started messaging it through our newsletters and everything else. And it never stops. I was at a business meeting locally, and I go out to business meetings in the white coat with a stethoscope, with prescription pads in my pocket. Prescription pad messaging is. We provide protection for insurance coverage, illnesses and insurance rate pain. Okay? So that's our messaging. And was going to the restroom at that business meeting. And right there in the lobby, the president of the local paradise, or, excuse me, Paradise Chevrolet, the local Chevrolet dealership. Very influential guy. Back to the law of the harvest, right? And he's been around forever. Gives to the community at the 80% level. Very generous organization. Very generous man. I ran into him, and his name's Terry. I said, terry, how you doing, man? He was good. How are you? We kind of recognize each other. And he said, well, let me back up for just a second. In our community as well, they finally built a hospital, a very modern hospital right there in the community about a year ago. And he goes, how you doing, man? I said, I'm good. How are you? He goes, hey, are you over at the new hospital?
Right? Well, I'm not a doctor at the hospital. I'm the insurance document. But he didn't think about that. So I've completely separated myself from everybody else in my industry. Got it. You must do something that's above and beyond what everybody's expecting. You get to blow them away. You have to blow their mind. How can you do that? Be thinking about that in every action that you take from an outreach standpoint, out think and out. Anticipate everybody in every way, every single day. Be proactive, not reactive. That's a core expectation in our Office that we are always reactive. Excuse me, Never reactive, but always preactive. Always preactive and never reactive. And whatever you do, you must have an emotional impact on the recipient. It must be emotionally impacting to their heart and everything else going on around them. Okay, so promotions on the wow side. What's needed? On time with value. Take a walk on the wow side.
Ask them. Think about that in your mind as it might translate to them what's needed, how can you give to them, be on time and most importantly, create some kind of value for them. You know, at a minimum, people simply just want to be recognized. If you'll just recognize them, somehow, some way.
It will be remembered. It doesn't have to be huge monetary gifts. Just a word of gratitude sometimes is all that it's needed.
One customer well taken care of could be more valuable than $10,000 worth of advertising. Give your clients, your prospects and your communities more than they expect. Don't just do the same old, same old because that's what everybody else is doing. You guys are already in the top 3% by being here. Let's get every one of you up to the top 1% every day, in every way.
Somebody gave me a compliment this morning on our team.
Grateful for them. You know what I respond to that person? It's the hiring system.
It's evaluating who they are. Okay, so if you want your teammates or if you are a teammate, if you want the rest of the people on your team to create this kind of experience, well, first of all, we got to do it for them, right? We have to encourage them to give more than they expect. But it's about getting the right people on the bus. Got it. Ok, good. AAA wow gifts. These are just some ideas. I mean, we've done a lot more than these things. I just wanted to plant some seeds, hopefully get the juices flowing for you to think outside the box a little bit. You can do a coffee mug with goodies. In the past, we've for like loan officer offices and that kind of stuff. We've actually gone as far as to take roses and have it delivered. Like if we got a referral from a loan officer that was a female, you know, we put a couple roses in a coffee cup and sent it over as a gift of gratitude. What do you think happened in the office at that point? Everybody else in the office runs over after the person that delivered it left and said, who's that from? Right. But we've created that situation and they say, oh, it's from my agent over at Tromsville Insurance. They always thank me with something cool. Got it. Good. Magazine cover, picture framed. I don't know if we still have one over there, but we have taken pictures of people and we've created a magazine cover and it's got their picture. They're profiled just like that on the Yeheman. Okay.
Anyway. And we profile them on a magazine cover and we put it in a picture frame and we deliver it to them. Did that for a chiropractor. And it was sitting in her office one day when I arrived at her office and she said. I said, how's that working out for you? She goes, everybody comments on it. I said, wow, that's cool. I said, what else do they say? They want to know where the full magazine is. All right. But there wasn't. But we profiled her and we thanked her and it was chiropractic. Today.
I don't know if any of you calendar mailers.
And if you do, is it surrounding your brand or who you are? I know that back in couple of years ago, we stopped doing that. We stopped. We have these custom calendar mailers that we send out. We have messaging inside encouraging people to set goals to, you know, help their neighbors and all this kind of stuff. And we didn't do it one year. And what do you think happened? All these people started calling the office. They're going, where's our calendars? We depend on these things.
Funny, you know, it's like a Facebook post. You don't think that everybody's reading it. They're looking at it. They really are. They just didn't comment on it. They don't have time. Whatever, whatever, whatever. But they see it. It's that same kind of messaging. Okay, so we do tote bags. We've got our blue tote bags. My mom taught me to never show up empty handed. So Supergirl and our other teammates make sure that we always have a lineup with things in it so that when we arrive that we have something to give them. Our latest hot swag is our technology kit. We got it from UPP member Mick Cottam. Thank you, Mick. Hey, those things, man, those are a huge hit. So they're 15 bucks. It opens up. It's got the iPhone and the Droid connections, and it's for the wall for the car. And it's got a portable power pack in the whole nine yards. Absolutely incredible. And we get tons of feedback. Just something of value. Provide the value. Inspirational motivational books, anything of value. My mom did teach me to never show up empty handed. So just bring something of value, look at them, and give with the right position of your heart. Okay, here's some ideas for promotional gifts. We've got custom coffee mugs, million dollar bills, notepads, pension. Those are just core things that we put in the bag. I look at the fact of who I'm going to meet. I always try to out think and out anticipate who I might run into. So I always show up with something. Why? Because nobody else does. Okay, these are little koozies that we created. These are actually older. We've recreated everything with our current branding that we've completely redone. But that's just some ideas for you. There's the real estate magazine. So to position this for just a second.
I was actually at an event with this gal, Susan, and we got to know each other pretty well. We kind of connected, you know what I'm talking about? We had the same kind of personality. And after the event was over, I said, hey, I've got something very cool that I'm working on, but I don't want to tell you what it is. Would you mind if I took your photograph? She goes, okay, that's fine. I said, she goes, what are you going to do with it? I said, let me create it and I'll bring it by your office if that's okay with you. Because ultimately, at the end of the day, this is going to help you a lot. You see how I converted that, the messaging? She goes, fantastic. Okay, so came back with a photo. Aw. Took this. And I don't know how she does it. Photoshop and all that kind of stuff. Real Estate Today was the front page of the magazine. Okay. Featuring Susan McCray. And then conveniently at the bottom, you know, insurance protection provided by Mike Stromsto. The photo is right there in the bottom. Right. Just out of the way. Okay. So we wrapped it up with a red bow on it, took it over your office and said, since you're one of the top real estate people in our area, I wanted to give you this gift because you should be featured on this magazine very soon. So prior to proudly display this in your office, same thing for the chiropractor, everybody that I continue to run into that I want to, you know, give them this kind of wow gift. That's how I position the whole thing. I mean, think outside the box here, how you can impact people. Okay. There are so many ways. Okay, there's the chiropractor's one in her office that I was telling you about a minute ago. Have a Surprise drawing spontaneously. This is one of our extremely high AAA clients. So we just surprised her because we were listening to what something she said on a phone call. One of my teammates came in and said if we did this, it'll blow her away. What has it resulted in? They own a lot of commercial property. The referrals, the referrals of all the tenants. The rent rolls are at our fingertips all of the time. Got it. Okay. Personal call, do it at the end of the day, do it on their anniversary, do it on their birthday. Who benefits from those phone calls? Both the caller and the receiver. So if your people really hopefully they don't. But if they need something to do or you want to set a day when you're just going to make these call to your AAA clients, that's the best place to start. Okay. Say from 4:30 to 5, I want you to call everybody that's got a birthday today or this week. Okay. And just wish them happy birthday. That's all you have to do. When they leave at 5 o', clock, what kind of mindset they're going to be in?
A great mindset. Not only because they gave the law of the harvest, but because the other people received it. And if they picked up the phone and said, wow, you made my day. If they keep hearing that message, how does that work out? Right. How does that translate to the rest of your business? Okay. We send out a lot of handwritten letters. So this is a sample of a handwritten letter. I use this, I've used this for years. Date, location, exact time and it's always an odd time. And I even put the weather on there. Why?
Because everybody's got the weather on their mind and it's different and it stands out, it's memorable and you don't have to use that exact thing. But.
How can you separate yourself based on your personality and who you are? Okay, alright. So we put gratefully down there at the bottom. I normally end everything that I write with that word.
Because that's the messaging that hopefully is coming from me at all times. It's a subtle reminder for myself every time I write it. Okay, we put things in there and those are the kinds of mailers that we use right here. There's lots of samples back there. You can touch them, you can feel them, you can see them, you can look at the additional labels that we put on there and everything else. If you receive something like that at your house, would you open it? Absolutely. The first goal of anything, whether it be digital or offline, is to get it opened to get it opened. All right? Then the message inside better be good enough to cause them to act. Okay? So it's got to get it open, better be good enough to get them to act. And most importantly, you've got to have a cta, a call to action. If you don't have a good call to action, giving them all the actions, by the way, in the call to action, phone, email, website, social media addresses, if appropriate, give them all of them. You never know where they're going to be at any certain time, so give them all of the options. Okay, this is a sample of our newsletter. There's our client of the month at the bottom of the newsletter, and that's what it looks like. There's our emergency contact program inside. But what we do for the client of the month is we send them. Currently, we send them a Harry and David gift. Okay, so it's about 40 bucks. It's very convenient. We go online, we send it out to them, and arrive spontaneously. In addition to that, we send them an actual copy of the newsletter in one of those blue envelopes with the thank you note, post it note handwritten right there. It's kind of open. So when they open it at their house, it says thank you, and then the gift arrives about the same time. Does that create that? Wow, Pop. One of our clients said, mike, we received your newsletter with our names and recognition along with the Harry and David gift box last night. You continue to amaze me with your creative marketing skills and appreciate what you do. Pat and I were honored that you would recognize us in this way. Thank you so much.
I mean, and I got an email right before I left. Same thing. I was talking about that the other day. The influential Rotary guy in our local market. Same thing. People love to be recognized. So stop them in their tracks, wow them emotionally, and it will make an impact. We listen for opportunities to wow people with new baby gifts, getting married.
Thank you for your service. The attitude of gratitude will always win and it never wears out. Okay, so if you're listening for an opportunity, we have somebody on the phone and there was a great conversation where you can emotionally impact them. Thank them. Oops.
Just close the large account back to the edible Arrangements. You can say thank you with an edible Arrangement.
This is a situation that's one of our teammates, that's our commercial lines department leader, actually. And she identified the fact that.
These people need to be recognized for a very large referral they gave us. So she stopped what she was doing. She drove over to Edible Arrangements. In our local market, got one and took it there and personally delivered it. So that's the people that she delivered it to. A gift of gratitude. I mean, look at the lady. She's got her arm on her arm. What kind of a relationship do you think they have did that support and deepen the relationship by doing something like that? Absolutely. This huge referral they gave us worked out phenomenally. Little side note. Think about this with me for a minute. How much is a good, good team member or employee worth? A lot.
Especially if it's long term. This other gal right here, the one that's smiling with kind of red hair in the turquoise.
She referred us. She was the core referrer of our current director of welcome who just got her license. Got it. Always be asking, always be looking. Most importantly, always be recruiting. Please.
It's so important. Okay, so because we're always talking to people like this, hey, what's going on in your business? What more can we do for you? And a lot of times they say, we're good. You're doing it. Thank you so much. What can we do for you?
The law of reciprocity is always in effect. And I'm sure that conversation happened, and Crystal said, hey, we're looking for great team members. If you know anybody, let us know. And she took action on that statement.
This is a wow situation. Let me get back in just a minute. We. In our lobby, we have a. Well, back in the old days, I had two rolls of red carpets. The actual red carpets, they're about this tall. They were kind of heavy. But every time I identified that somebody important was coming in the office, I would roll out the red carpet. But the thing with that, it got to be a paint pita. You know what a pita is, right? And so I said, when we redid some things in our office, we put up a digital. We put up a tv, and then we created a digital red carpet. It's just simply a PowerPoint. That's all it is. Okay, so we had this guy come in the office, A very influential dude. The guy who. Stay with me on this. Remember I talked about Cameron Harold, the book Double Double, which went to the 10x the Madrid trip. I told you about that. Okay.
This is the guy who introduced me to Cameron Harrell.
This is how I got to know the guy. He came into our office. He wanted to talk to me about some business things. I said, sure, come on in. This is what happened. Hey, I just met a new friend of mine, J. Levin. And when he walked into his office, he said something to me that I've never heard before. And I'm going to let you him tell you exactly what that is.
Okay. So I'm Jay, and I walk into a lot of offices. Big offices, small offices, simple offices, fancy offices, poor offices, rich offices, important offices, and not so important offices. But this.
Freaking blew my mind. And it blew my mind so much because no one in any office for over 40 years in any one of the 10 to 12 countries that I have been in, has ever put me on the red carpet. And as far as I'm concerned.
My name could have been misspelled, and it could have been upside down. I wouldn't have cared less. You know, you meet people that you just know care about you.
I know Mike cares about me. Thank you. That was a rush.
Welcome.
Please. Thank you so much. Thank you. Please do not lose sight of this, though. And I believe this is the key component to that interaction.
If you want to have more, you have to become more. Okay? It's how you interact with people. It's how you look them in the eye. It's how you shake their hand with that attitude of gratitude. And they should be able to feel that condition coming from you. It takes daily habit and. Sorry. Work every day. Got to keep working on it. Okay? So find that way to continue to work on yourself. Because when he walked in, what I normally do when we have this situation, if it's me who's interacting with the person, I will shake their hand. I will look them in the eye. I will ask them if they'd like water, coffee. You need to use the restroom. I'm not afraid to say that. Why? Because sometimes I walk into a place, I've been in the car for a long time, and it's in the morning. I had coffee. I'd like to use the restroom. Treat them like family.
Do unto others. Make them feel like they just walked into their family's home. So I make people feel like that. And then I say, jay. I turn him around so he's looking at. I say, jay, we're so grateful you're here.
And that's what he saw. So get really good at delivering the message in a way that will wow them and touch them emotionally. Got it. Okay. Emotional bank deposits.
These are all emotional bank deposits. If you translate it. Got it. Okay. I send people books. I got the opportunity to connect with Mr. Michael Gerber, the author of the E Myth, again recently. A couple. A year ago, maybe a year and a half ago. He only lives 30 minutes from my house. That Was cool to find out. Okay. Jumped into a program, learned a whole bunch from him, got him to sign a bunch of books for our clients. Personally signed Russ, you know, to Russ, et cetera, et cetera. That was awesome. So I started sending out to people and I got copies of posts back.
And also think about this with me for a minute. I actually got this idea from our IT vendor, Mythos Technology, who sponsored the blue bags that you have all your stuff in. So if you have any questions about them, they couldn't be here. They're at their own mastermind becoming more. Okay. She taught me if you see a post anywhere in social media, and Supergirl's actually in charge of this, she does a great job with it. Every time somebody likes me on LinkedIn, I see a Facebook post that's, you know, influential or somebody's recognizing something. We do our best to print these out. And here's a message that I said. I said, hey, Grattan. Integrity, you rock. Hope all is well. Mike. I write those words because that's how I communicate a lot of times, right? And I send it to them in an envelope, of course. The right kind of envelope, not a normal envelope. Okay. So it gets opened. Here's a note that I read him. Hey, Grattan was recently hanging out with Michael Gerber of the E. Myth. Has books signed for you. I sent it to him. Please always add a P.S. whenever you can because the human mind is focused on the ps. Okay.
Hope the biz is well. Okay. Oh, hope the fam. Excuse me, what's more important, fam or biz? Fam. Okay. Hope the fam is well. Okay. Send a testimonial to one of your clients or prospects without being asked. What's the best way to get testimonials to give them first? The law of the harvest. We're going to talk more about that a little bit. Video testimonial, Written testimonial. Write a review on Google for them or Yelp. Recommend them on LinkedIn. LinkedIn and Facebook carry relationships. What's your company reps birthday? Do you know? Does he or she have a favorite sports team? Do they have a favorite vacation spot? Okay. Treat them and go to lunch. Okay. This is one of the all time favorites for me. Okay, so remember McKenna, Elijah's sister in the Hola video? Okay, that's McKenna a couple of years ago. She's a girl scout and she always comes to the house at that time of year. Grandpa, how many girl scout cookies would you like to buy?
She's got the messaging down, by the way. I like that. I don't know where she picked that up. But anyway, so my wife said, we need to buy a bunch. So I ended up buying a bunch. I don't, I don't know, 150 boxes or something like that. It was more of a story than that. So they're sitting in the kitchen for a while and I'm thinking, oh man, what are we gonna do with these? So I had an opportunity to go over to our largest client, which is in Las Vegas. And every time I go over there, there's 90 employees just in the corporate office. Okay? So I always buy lunch, I do a big spread and all that kind of stuff. And I said, aha, I'm gonna take all these cookies over to the corporate office. I'll give them to all the people that work there and I'll try to tell the story. So I said to McKenna, I said, McKenna, let me take a picture of you, okay? And I put it on this note, okay? I created a buck slip and it says, thank you for allowing us to protect and serve you to all the employees of the team. And I had a rubber band around it. So I had a copy of the picture, the buck slip, and I rubber banded it around all the boxes and I had them stacked. When we buy lunch, it's in this big area. We put out these tables. We either buy their favorite restaurants. I got a gal inside who I said, where does everybody like to eat? So we get their favorite food and I put it on all the tables, okay? And at the end was the Girl Scout cookies. And all of a sudden people start coming up and said, what's with the cookies? Are they for sale? I said, no, it's our gift of gratitude. So I go back and do this the next time that I go over there months later, and I started getting comments. Do you have cookies? Again.
Think about that. It's the personalization of the message and how it's delivered in creating that wow experience. Heidi Hagan, the director of welcome at this client, says, mike, thanks again for feeding us. Including my son. There was a lot of extra. So I said to her, because I knew she had kids and I know for family situation by conversing with her. Okay.
And learning more about her and caring about her. Can't wait to try the avocados later. Oh, by the way, that's what I bring sometimes in these situations. Why? Because I have a personal story behind it. 1950s, planted by hand. My dad and grandpa. Grandpa. I used to pick him When I needed money, I rang Grove Cruise. Fallbrook was the avocado capital of the world and still is in the minds of some. That's where I live. I have a personal message and I share the story. So what is your story? What can you share to impact people? Where have you been? What do you do and how can you personalize it like nobody else.
Help anybody in your community in any way? I see it. Networking. This is a quasi definition of networking. Relationship, connections, success, communities, common interest, meet and greet colleagues, business cards. Even through the Internet. Contacts, opportunities, career. Always got to be networking in some way. Okay. Keeping kids first at Christmas. We're big on that. Community shred events, opportunities. Share with local businesses. Giving back. I do a lot of this, you know, like what I'm standing here doing today. I will go out and do four hour sessions all day long. I love, love, love to do it. Does it come across like that? Yeah. You're touching people and impacting people emotionally like nobody else can. You can do it. You can do it. Now lunch and learns. I go out and do lunch and learns for people in real estate offices and lots of other things. Ask tactical questions and listen for the opportunity. Remember, every good conversation starts with your two ears and your one mouth closed, okay? They will tell you everything you want to know and everything you don't want to know. Engage with clients and prospects. Take a mental note. Pictures hanging in their office. Make a note of their personal interest, their spouse, their kids. Back to the Harvey McKay 66. I told you about that the other day, right? Google Harvey McKay, 66. Harvey McKay, author of Swinging with the Sharks from Minnesota said if you have these 66 pieces of information about anybody, you will have the deepest personal relationship with that person that you ever could.
Don't forget the easiest, least expensive way gift that will create a wow, handwritten thank you notes. We talked a little bit about that. That's our handwritten thank you notes. That's the envelope that we use most of the time. Okay. To send handwritten thank you notes, personal and confidential, written in red John Doe only. It's always got something inside.
This is what comes back. Now that was good. Sorry we didn't meet. This is a high end real estate executive, okay. Who I was standing with in a conversation. I was introduced and something happened. Got busy, but I grabbed the business card anyway. We shook hands and that was kind of it and everything moved on. But I grabbed his card anyway and sent him a note and I sent the million dollar bills. He says thanks for the 2 million I'm out of here. Very nice approach. I'm sure I will see you sooner than later.
