Welcome to episode 45 of the Unstoppable Profit Podcast. This is Mike Stromsoe coming to you live from the Living Agency Laboratory. And today we are joined by a very, very special guest, the unstoppable, the one and only Mr. Joe Theisman. Joe, how are you today, sir?
I'm great Mike, thanks for having me.
Oh, thank you for being here. And we are uber pumped and excited that Joe is going to be at our upcoming Be Unstoppable boot camp. And today we just wanted to find out the latest on what's going on with Joe Theisman. Before we go there, let me just remind you of the amazing accomplishments that Mr. Joe Theisman so far has accomplished in his lifetime. Helping other people, being a leader and a team member of many, many others. So Joe Theisman is an entrepreneur and a former star quarterback for the Washington Redskins. He's spent more than two decades working for ESPN and on the NFL broadcast and on the NFL. He's a 1971 graduate of the University of Notre Dame. Mr. Theisman received all America honors and led the Fighting Irish two consecutive Cotton Bowls. And he was also inducted into the College Football hall of Fame. He's also a 12 year NFL veteran. He played in 163 consecutive games. So he's got gumption, he's got grit. He's got what it takes. And that's one of the many, many things that I love about Joe. And he holds the Redskins record actually for passing yards, completions and attempts. He was a two time Pro bowl selection. He led the redskins to a 2717 victory over the Dolphins in Super Bowl 17 in 1982. And this is another thing that I absolutely love and admire about Joe. In 1982, he was elected as the NFL's man of the Year for his dedication and service to others. In 1983, he won the league's MVP. Joe, amazing. And I know that you've done so much more. That's just a short snippet of the bio. Thank you for being who you are and what you've done for other people. So do you want to add anything on as far as the latest of what's going on with you?
Yeah, Mike, oddly enough, I was a Walter Camp Distinguished American Award winner a few years back. But also I have a book coming out in the spring of 2020 called how to Be a Champion. Every Day it's a project. Wow. Even since you. Even since you and I spend time together, it's been a project and a passion for mine. And from our good friend James Malincheck, who continued to push me and push me and push me, I'm finally going to bring it out in the spring of 2020.
He has that way about him, doesn't he?
Yes, he's a nudge. He's a wonderful nudge.
So let me just repeat that. Joe, give me the name of the book again.
How to Be a Champion Every Day.
Fantastic. And you want to give us a 30 to 60 second insight to what the book's going to be about. Can you do that yet?
Yeah. It basically talks about really overcoming challenges in our lives, being able to look for the best in people, focusing on projects. You know, I think everybody out there will admit that we go through procrastination in our lives. And quite often, for example, you start a project and then you table it because something else came up and then something else comes up while you started that other project. And before the day is over, you've started three projects and you've completed nothing. I think that's one of the things that I try and fight is trying to start too many things, trying to get involved in so many things that you just can't finish projects. And it's interesting. If you take a project from start to finish, it's amazing how much time you have to be able to do those other things instead of just starting and stopping with them. It really is a question of focus. So many of us, I think, tend to do, like I said, what I did. And the book, for me, it's really a reinforcement of things, I believe. I talk about goals in it. I talk about attitudes. Colin Powell has written some segments for me and different people have contributed to the book as well. For Me, people I admire and respect tremendously. And I always enjoy learning. This is one of the things that when I'm with you, listening to you speak.
With James, I learn. I think every day you have to have this quest for knowledge. And I tell people all the time, you need to know more today than you knew yesterday, and you need to know more tomorrow than you knew today. And that way, it just keeps. It keeps you moving forward in your life.
Wow. Amazing. We need to know more tomorrow than we did today. We need to know more tomorrow than we did. I didn't get that right.
We need to know more.
Go ahead.
We need to know more today than we knew yesterday, and we need to know more tomorrow than we knew today. Fantastic.
Wonderful. Thank you. Could not agree more. The day we stop learning is the day we stop growing. And that's one of the many, many reasons, Joe, why I know that you make such an impact for people and their lives. I can't wait, and I can't wait to read it. I can't wait to be part of it. Meaning that helping other people learn what's inside of it as well, to support you. So thank you.
Fantastic.
Yeah. But let's talk about another subject.
Yeah. Yeah. I've done a couple. I've done a couple of Hallmark movies, and I have another one coming up here, I think, in late fall. So I dabble a little bit in the. In the Hallmark area. You know, it's everything. Everything is so negative today in the world. It seems like every time we pick up a newspaper or turn on a TV or hear a headline, everything is negative. That's one thing that I love about doing Hallmark movies is they're all basically the same. We know pretty much how they're going to end, but you don't quite know the content. But there always is a good feeling about being a part of them. That's what I'm really into in my life is good feelings. I think everybody should be entitled to feel good about where they are. We all go through struggles. We all go through trials and tribulations. People say to me all the time, geez, Joe, you're always this up guy. You're always up, up. Do you ever have a down day? Absolutely. I just choose not to stay in the valley very long, Mike. I mean, we. Life is a choice. You can choose to wallow wherever you want to wallow. You can choose to press forward and fight on. And that's sort of what I've done all my life.
I'm writing that one down. I choose not to stay in the valley too long.
That's fantastic. And we're the result of the five people we hang around with the most. It's been said. Correct, Joe?
Correct. Yeah. I mean, you know, and that's one of the things that I encourage parents is, you know, moving on to elements of life. And parenting is one. There's no book, everybody's written books on parenting, but nobody knows. I mean, it's, you know, we've all raised kids to a point where every day is an adventure. I think one of the most important things that I try and share with parents is young parents in particular, is be very conscious of the people that are around your children. And it goes right to what you said, Mike. You know, the five most influential people who. How are they going to influence your life? How are they going to influence your mind? How are they going to influence your thoughts, influence your habits?
I've always said. And another thing, you know, in conversation with people, I said, look, if you want to, you want to learn how to be successful, study successful people. There's a. There are common traits in successful individuals. Whether they're in the world of business, art, music, theater, sports, it doesn't matter. There are common traits that exist in all of them. If you want to figure out how to get a basis and a start for yourself, study them. What do they do? You don't have to do it their way. See, that's the thing. You have to take ownership of your life and you have to do it your way. That, to me, is one of the great things about leadership, is recognizing individuals and their individuality and moving them towards the commonality of a goal. So I respect you. I like your ideas. I think they're good. Maybe we'll use them, maybe we won't. But don't stop thinking. But we're all right direction in the same direction.
That's right. The idea of funnel and just see where it develops. And we have to do it with what we say in the unstoppable circles. BF belief and faith. We have to believe that we can do it, and we just have to believe in the process and just know that, hey, there's going to be wins and there's going to be lessons. Right, Joe?
Absolutely. You know, and it's. Yeah, to me, there's no such thing. There's no such thing as a failure. It's only an educational experience that didn't go your way.
That's why we call it a lesson. But, you know, you said something a couple of minutes ago that I Want to jump back to real quick. You mentioned setbacks and struggles and something of that particular realm. So I know that your NFL career was cut short abruptly. And for the people listening to this, Joe, can you just share a little bit about. If you can think. Well, obviously it's very vivid still, but think back to that moment. And then obviously there were struggles after that. You had to come to the realization that things were going to have to be different. Back to the challenge of change, if you will, which I know you're going to be talking about at the Be Unstoppable boot camp. I can't wait to take notes on that. But.
How did you overcome the struggles? I mean, what did it take? Just give some gold nuggets on that. And what was the turning point for you?
Well, I think the turning point. The turning point was the night that I got hurt. The Turning Point was 34 years ago when my leg was broken. I had achieved so much success in the world of professional football. I'd reached a point where I really didn't feel like I needed anybody. I was an island unto myself. Turn on TVs, turn on radios, pick up newspapers, the headlines just said Theismans this and Theismans that. And if you didn't believe that, just ask me. I told you that's where I was in my life. I had become very self centered and I thought that the Redskins couldn't be successful without me. And then on November 18, 1985, the night my leg was broken, I guess you could say everything that I thought was important in life changed. That was, that was like, you know, was a line of demarcation for me. It was, it was who I was before. And I never want to give up that desire to be the best. You never want to give up to try and be the best. Because if you don't believe in yourself, who's going to believe in you? But I also felt like. I felt like, you know, the team couldn't go forward without me and come find out they won two more world championships after I left. But I struggled after my injury dealing with who I was and what I had become as a person. I wasn't proud of it. And that time gave me an opportunity to reflect back on the type of an individual that I had become. Not a bad person per se, but someone that didn't really appreciate and understand the blessings that life gives us and that's relationships and that's opportunities. All words that I think are very important and integral into the growth of our life through our life. And then I had the chance to be able to build on it. And I was a football player. I was Joe Theisman football player. Now I had to seek another aspect of life. And that's really where I came up with the foundation of what I'll talk at the boot camp about these different principles that I try and apply to my life today and every day and try and carry those principles forward and share them with people. And, you know, you do the same thing I do, Mike. What we do is basically we're, we're seed planners. I call myself Joey Appleseed, just like you be Mike Appleseed. Joey Appleseed is we go out. We go out and we share experiences with people. We say, look, this may not be the only way for you to look at life, but at least take a chance to look at it. Have you written down your goals? Do you know what you want? Why do you want to get up every morning and go, I don't know. I mean, to me that's not a life. It's a state of confusion.
You stop and you think, what can you do to lay out for people to say, here's a myriad of things to look at. I want you to think about these, think about some, see how they work for you. Tweak them, modify them. Maybe that one doesn't fit, maybe this one does. But take ownership of whatever you're doing.
Hope is not a strategy, by the way.
Absolutely not. That's one of my very favorites. And Joe, everybody that will be at the boot camp, everybody that is listening to this, I will guarantee. And if they don't admit this, they're lying. We all have challenges. One of the things that we talk about a lot in our coaching programs and so forth and so on, is follow one course until success every single day. But the other great thing about learning, Jo, and this just happened this morning. I was on a one to one call with one of our platinum coaching members and she said after, you know, she had a subject she wanted to talk about, I said, you know, have you ever thought about it like this, to do this and make this the action plan and then follow up with this? She goes, I never thought about it like that. Isn't that the wonderful thing about learning, Joe, is when, you know, people who are not in the middle of it, maybe on the outside can see things that we can't see because we're too close to it?
Right, right. And conversely, I'm sure there are things in conversations that you've had with, with the people you coach where they've said something to you, and you go, you know what? That's a very interesting perspective. I haven't thought about that either. See, people look at, you know, us that sort of talk and do what you do and what I do, and we don't have all the answers, but if we can. If we can have a conversation, we can see what fits both of us and move forward from there. And I think that's what's exciting about having a chance to be able to speak at the boot camps, to be able to share stories and share experiences. I'm no different than anybody else, just like you are. We've just experienced different things. I've been on this earth a little bit longer than you have, so I've experienced a few other things.
What you want to do is. You want. You want to share those things. And what I try to do is. It's almost like, listen, give me a chance to help you avoid some of the. The dead ends that you're going to run into, because you will run into dead ends. But if you. And I'm only here to help. I'm not here to criticize. I'm not here to judge. I'm not here to do anything except help you be the best person you can be. And this is what I tell people all the time. The one thing I really try and share with people is don't let anybody ever tell you you can or cannot do something. I was 152lbs when I graduated from high school. I went to the University of Notre Dame, one of 13 quarterbacks. And I wrote down on a piece of paper right after the first practice, I will be the greatest quarterback ever to play at Notre Dame. Now, what right did I have being a skinny, scrawny little kid who, when I walked off the plane in South Bend, Indiana, one of the coaches turned to the others and said, he's not big enough to carry a water bucket. What makes you think he can play quarterback? But it doesn't matter what other people think, Mike. It only matters what we believe and we think. And that's the thing I want all the people at the boot camp to understand. This is about you. This is about you shaping your life. This is about you getting better. And I applaud those that will be there, and I applaud those that are listening to us today. You're taking steps to do something to affect your life in a positive way, and congratulations for that.
Yeah, absolutely. I commend every single one of them. I know way back when, when I started on my Adventure in becoming more, if you will. More than 20 years ago, it was that that was my turning point. The minute I decided to start investing in myself to be able to learn more. The quest for knowledge, the quest for greater. Then I looked outside of the industry and then ultimately the day came that I was led to meet you for the first time because I was on a quest to find that new knowledge, to find, you know, a better way of looking at things. So what a blessing it was that day that I got to meet you. And, you know, I just wrote something down, Joe, about you. And I want to say this publicly because I believe it with all of mine, that one of the greatest things about you, you have such a giving heart. And every time that I've gotten an opportunity to spend with you, that's what you want to do. You just want to give and you want to share and you want to help. And I mean, kudos to you, Mr. Theisman.
I appreciate that, Mike. You know, I believe we're, we're given the grace of God has given us an opportunity to be on this earth not to take. And I was a taker. I was a taker to the own degree. And I discovered this. It goes back to the night of my injury when, you know, I did all this taking and then all of a sudden we're not here. We're here to serve. And we can, and we can serve in so many different ways. You know, I think both you and I and those people that share, we try and serve to allow people to look at their lives, to be able to do something. I mean, I tell people all the time, what have you done today to put one smile on one person's face? What have you done today? Have you helped somebody across the street? Have you helped somebody into a car? Have you helped somebody with groceries? Have you let somebody in in this crazy fast paced driving whirlwind? Have you slowed down so that someone can get in ahead of you when there's a line of traffic? Or are you one of those people like I was? I'm not letting you in. You can't. You're not going to take my spot. I mean, I think it's a whole lot easier to be nice than it is to be nasty.
Absolutely agree. Absolutely agree. Well, Joe, it's been an absolute treat to talk with you again and we are uber pumped and excited.
