You know that a thriving brand starts with a well defined niche. But getting clear on a niche is one of the biggest hurdles that trips up a lot of entrepreneurs early on. What if you could take a universal energy shortcut that helps you laser in on that perfect niche and makes you more magnetic for your ideal customers and followers all at the same time? Let's dive right in. You're listening to the Universe has yous Business. It's the podcast for rising entrepreneurs, coaches, change makers who are here to achieve more while letting the universe do the heavy lifting. I'm your host, Andrew Donovan. I love this conversation because this subject is one that has caused me a lot of grief and given me a lot of pleasure throughout my years as an entrepreneur. So if you've ever heard me talk about niches, you know that niche is really the starting point of the digital marketing. If you are, it's the niche, it's the starting point of business in general. Let's first of all make sure that we're on the same page about what a niche is. What do you consider to be a niche? I would say that a niche is your little sector of the market space. The niche is what allows you to identify your ideal customers in the marketplace and what allows them to identify you as an ideal fit for them. And when those two things are a clear match, well, then you do business together. They whip out their credit card, they want to follow you on your journey, and they want you to take them on that same journey. That's the power of the niche. So when you have a niche well defined, I believe that it allows you to answer three things. And those three things for me are, number one, I can help this specific person. So when I'm clear on my niche, I know a specific kind of person that I'm best equipped to help that my business or brand is designed to assist. So when I say specific person, you know how this conversation goes. If you followed me for any amount of time. So specific doesn't mean women or men. It doesn't mean parents or not parents. It's more specific than that. So. So I help homeschooling parents that specific or I help pet shop owners. Things that the specifics can include attitudes about life. It can include gender, age, income levels, education levels, occupation, aspirations. Okay, so number one, I help this specific person. Number two, achieve solve this specific problem. So there's a main thing that your specific people are looking to solve. What do you think it is? A specific problem is not help them make more money. That's not or get out of debt. That's too broad, it's too general. Or a specific problem isn't something general, like, I help people who aren't very happy in life, alright? It's got to be specific. So I help this specific person solve this specific problem in order to achieve this specific outcome or transformation, which is number three. So the outcome or transformation is the thing that they want the most in regards to whatever your business is about. Okay, so the specific outcome or transformation means that you're taking them from where they are, the problem to, to progress, to new achievement, to improved results. All right? And the outcome of transformation, it can be something that's tangible, like losing 10 pounds. It can be something that is emotional, that is related to the way they perceive their life experience or their job experience or whatever your business is leading them toward in terms of progress and improvement. Okay? So that's what a niche is. And the reason why it matters is because again, like I said, when you've got that niche clarity, they can identify you amidst a sea of voices online. There's so much stuff happening on their news feeds, on all the social platforms that they're looking at. When they Google something and they see all the ads pop up, there's a lot of noise and. And when you've got that niche clarity, you light up and they see that and they quickly recognize, oh, that's the person that I should listen to right now. I should stop scrolling and pay attention to whatever their post says or whatever their ad says. Do you see what I'm saying? So that's why the niche matters. Now. Niche is probably the first stopping point, the first hurdle to that entrepreneurs get stuck on when they start forming a proper business model. When you're an entrepreneur that's just kind of rolling with the punches and you don't really have a strategy, you might get stuck other places first. But if you're building out a proper online business, you know that you first have to have that niche clarity. And when I do group coaching with my marketing machine in a weekend course, which starts with the niche conversation, and any time we're talking about this overall business concept, and I say you need a niche, people want to spend days and days and days working on their niche because, well, first of all, a lot of people want multiple niches. You might, right? There's probably a few niches that you could cater toward, a few kinds of people that you could help. There's probably even multiple outcomes or transformations that you could lead people toward. So people get stuck on choosing a niche Also, sometimes we really want to stand out in our market space, and so we want our niche to be unique. Like, if I were selling something that a lot of people are selling, like digital marketing advice, then I would want to make sure that I have unique identifiers. I don't want to say my niche is I help people. People who want an online business make lots of money online, because that's not specific at all. That just makes me sound like everybody else. And so people get stuck trying to figure out how to make their niche unique to them and stand out from the crowd. And so I've had personal experience with getting stuck in niches for multiple businesses, because, like you, most likely, I want my message to be totally authentic to me. I want it to resonate. I want it to be resonant with the energy of who I am as a person, as a human being. I want it to be clear in vernacular. I'd like to be able to explain it, to articulate it in clear ways so that people easily understand what I'm talking about. I want my niches to set up the rest of my business model. I want my niches to help people raise their hand and say, oh, that's me. I'm your niche. Talk to me, tell me what you've got. Teach me, lead me, guide me. And I want my niche to set up the products that I'm going to sell later on. I want my niche to do all those things. And so let me tell you a story. The first online business that I ever had was selling my original course, Seven Steps to Residual Income. And it was a course that I created for the network marketing company Doterra, an essential oil company. And I had spent several years as a distributor in that company. And I love them so much. And so I thought, I know so much about this business and industry, I should make a course that teaches them how to build their network marketing business really efficiently. And so I used my strategy mind and my activator skills and I made this course and I started selling it, and it took off really fast. And what I didn't realize for a while, though, is that one of the things that kept me from scaling that business is I kept trying to make my course for everybody. I thought, this is such a good strategy that everybody should start out with this. And that was a block for me to be able to scale my business because I'm not the best for everybody. And it took me a little while to figure that out. I'm the best for the people in my niche. Does that make sense to you? Just like you're not the best for everyone. You're not the answer for everybody. That's ridiculous. And sometimes I hear people say, oh, my products are. They really are for everyone. No, they're not. They're for the people that they will serve best. That is not everybody. So I finally reached this point with my seven steps course where I said, okay, I need to hunker down and get clear on the niche conversation. And it took me a little while and I felt really frustrated. And I'm gonna tell you another story that's even more frustrating with an even better outcome. Okay. But eventually with this seven steps course, I realized that what's unique about me is my ability to create step by step strategies from complex concepts and network marketing. As simple as people want to say it is, it is a complex business model. And so my course was not the best fit for everyone. It was for strategic thinkers. It was better for strategic thinking, network marketers. And if you had somebody who was not a strategist who didn't want to be taking brisk, fast paced action, my course is totally not for those people. And some of those people did buy my course. And then those are probably the 1.5% of people who asked for a refund because they got in my course. And they're like, whoa. Energetic mismatch. And the gift that you give the people in your niche, when you have that niche clarity, is that they feel at home with you. And those are the customers that are the most satisfied. That's where you get all the testimonials from super happy people getting results. You love that, right? That's what you want, isn't it? Hey, you guys hopping on the Facebook Live. I'm gonna pause my little podcast recording here. So I'm doing this new thing where we do Facebook lives. I record a video, we're gonna edit this, post it on YouTube and edit the audio and put it into the upcoming Donovan Rising podcast. So that will be really fun. But I'm glad to see you hopping on live. How are you? I missed you. Last week I was in Cabo, Mexico. I meant to do a video and it just. I just didn't make space for it. So. Totally honest there. But where are you joining from? It's beautiful here in Salt Lake City. It's snowing. I'm about to go skiing as soon as we're done with this video. But I want to hear from you, so drop some love in the comments and let's continue on here. Okay, the next story that I wanted to share with you is my big brand pivot. So I was for a few years, a coach for network marketers. And the day came when I just knew inside that it was time for me to do a brand pivot, which meant redefining my niche, because I knew that it had been a great gift to be able to coach thousands and thousands of network marketing entrepreneurs around the world. But what I really was passionate about were the digital marketing skills that I developed that allowed me to grow my first six figure business and then my first seven figure business online. And I wanted to be able to take that and conversation to entrepreneurs who are aspiring to shift to an online model. And that includes a lot of network marketers. Most network marketers want to do things online, but I wanted to be able to bring in other industries and other specializations too. So I set out to pivot my brand from network marketing to digital marketing. And again, I knew that I needed my niche to be very clear. I wanted to be able to say I helped this specific person solve this specific problem. And I wanted the niche to be a reflection of the kind of energy that I wanted to bring to my business with this new brand pivot. And it was a little. It was pretty nerve wracking. I actually had multiple times when I, like, was in tears because it was just important to me to be able to be so clear on this. So, so true story. It took me over a year to figure this out. And what finally led me to clarity was not writing things down, it was not pushing. It was not doing mind exercises to try and make the inspiration come to me. What finally came to me was when I backed off the topic, when I finally said, you know what, I. I don't need the niche. What I actually need is the energy of clarity. And I want you to bear with me here because I'm gonna go a little bit intense with you, a little deep. All right? Do I have your permission to do that? So you want the niche because you want to feel clear, you want to be clear mentally about who your business is meant to serve so that they can identify you, you can identify them. Correct. Well, what's the energy beneath all of that that you're really going for? It's the feeling of clarity. Because when you're clear, other people will be able to see you easily. They'll be able to say, ooh, I like that energy. I like that feeling. So I'm gonna go with that person. And it dawned on me one day that I had been doing all these questionnaires I had been questioning my clients, past clients. I was questioning people that were that matched my dream customer. I ran beta test groups and asked them, what do you think my niche is? And people had lots of different opinions, kind of all around the same topics. Everyone knew that it was about digital marketing, but a lot of conversations were about how I focus so much on Law of attraction and universal principles that are the underlying foundation for everything I do in my digital marketing business. And for so long I was like, okay, this makes no sense. So law of attraction and like conscious creation and the energy and the universal laws, plus online business building and digital marketing and building out sales funnels and building your list and email marketing and all that. How the heck does this fit together? And literally, I was stuck here forever. You might relate to this. You probably have. If you're like most entrepreneurs, you've got multiple good ideas and you're like, how do I make a business out of this? And so I really spun my wheels in the mud. And I had many conversations with my bestie, Jessica Jovanovich, who's an incredible mindset and manifestation coach. And I would get on the phone with her and we'd be just workshopping all the different ideas that I had about my business. But ultimately, what brought the clarity is when I backed off the topic of having to define my niche. And I just said, you know, I'm gonna find the feeling of clarity, and then I think the details will just fill themselves in. So if you're a student in any of my courses right now and you've gotten stuck on the niche conversation, because I gave you a three step framework for defining your niche. The I help this specific person solve this specific problem to achieve this specific outcome or transformation. And back off the framework, okay? Go skiing or go walk on the beach or do anything that allows you to tap into the feeling of clarity. Because when you're tuned into that energy, the details fill themselves in. That's Law of Attraction at its fundament. You find the feeling space of clarity, and then things that also feel clear will come to you. So if you've sent out a summons to the universe saying, I need my niche, I need the clarity about my niche, well, the universe heard you, okay? And the only reason why you're not receiving the answer is because you're stuck in the weeds. You're stuck in the muddle, the detail, trying to sort it all out yourself. Well, I want to give you permission to let the wisdom of the wiser mind of the universe manage those details for you. Would you be okay with that? Does that maybe feel a little bit easier than having to make yourself be the brilliant mind that figures out the niche? And you might be thinking, but hold on. I want to be the person who comes up with my niche. This is my brand and my business. My friend, you are the person. You are the universe. Your mind just gets in the way sometimes. Do you see how that works? So what I do is to tune into a feeling of clarity. A few things. I love to go on walks in nature. I like to get fresh air. I exercise. Maybe I'll take a break from work and go make a green smoothie or a healthy meal. Those things all bring me clarity. I also have a little exercise that I really enjoy doing. And me sharing this exercise with you doesn't mean you have to do it. Okay? I'm just giving you an idea that really works well with me. So, on my tablet, I keep a digital journal, and I write out lists of positive aspects. Sometimes I'll write out paragraphs around a certain topic in order to calibrate to a specific thing. So, literally this morning, I woke up, and I wasn't feeling super motivated, and I knew that I was gonna be doing this episode recording today, and I thought, ooh, I want to be tuned into inspiration. So I whipped out my journal, and I just wrote a few paragraphs about inspiration and what it feels like and where I find inspiration and why I like being inspired. And I've done that with the energy of clarity as well. And all of a sudden, after I spend some time just really percolating, simmering, stewing in that yummy energy of clarity, because I'm writing it down on paper or on a tablet. But the point is, I like to write because I find that the kinesthetic activity really gets me in a rhythm. It really gets my mind spinning quickly in a specific, useful, positive direction. And so after I write for several minutes about the feeling of clarity, all of a sudden I am clearer. And those details that I've been trying to figure out for my business, they just start to fill themselves together, put themselves together, and then I write them down. As soon as the ideas come to me, I always write them down. I learned I've lost too many good ideas in the distant past to not write stuff down now. So I invite you to, number one, commit to having that kind of niche clarity for your business, because it makes all the difference. You want your people online. There's billions of people online. You want the right ones to be able to identify you easily and Quickly. And the niche clarity is what allows you to do that. I've given you the very simple three step framework that I use to establish to define what my niche is, okay? And you can go deeper than those three things. You can get super detailed about your niche. You can identify the common limiting beliefs, you can identify the common solutions that are most likely to solve those limiting beliefs for your niche, okay? But that three step framework is like the basic way to define a niche. And most importantly, I invite you to commit to tuning into the energy, the feeling space of clarity and allowing the wiser mind of the universe to bring to you the those details that you're looking for. And who knows how long it will take. It might take you 15 minutes and all of a sudden you're clear. And it might take you days or even sometimes weeks. But the moment that you say, I don't have it yet, I don't know what my niche is yet, it's not here yet. That's when you're introducing more resistance and holding that inspiration at bay. So stop questioning why it's not here yet, because that's not going to help you. And spend as much time as you're conscious, as much time as you're aware, tuning into that feeling of clarity. It's so refreshing. Is it not so lovely when you've got the little light bulbs going off in your head, when you feel that opening in your heart space because you feel clear when the ideas just start coming one after another after another? Those are the nights when we, as entrepreneurs, we work really late and our friends say, you work super hard, don't you? And we say, I was just in inspiration. I had to keep going with it because it felt so good. That's the space where your niche clarity comes. And one last little tip. Just because you choose a niche doesn't mean you're stuck with it forever. Okay? You can start in one area and you can pivot or you can elaborate, you can expand and you probably will. All right? So once you've got one niche down and you're creating consistent revenue with that niche, you can add on a second niche too. You're not stuck. You just want to start somewhere. And the best place to start is tuning into the energy of clarity. So do me a favor, hit the follow, hit the subscribe button. Share this with entrepreneur friends who need this conversation and thank you for tuning in. I will see you next time. Sam.
