Dr. Carrie Jones explains how declining estrogen and progesterone during menopause weaken the gut barrier, triggering digestive changes and mood issues. Diversifying your gut microbiome through nourishing foods, not restrictive diets, can help ease anxiety and stabilize mood.
How much does the role of our gut health play during menopause and beyond? For myself it's like just waking up overnight and all of a sudden my digestion is different. For a lot of people I work with like our bowel movements are different, how we digest food is different, our cravings are different.
So estrogen and progesterone both play a role positively, generally positively in your gut health. Unfortunately as our estrogens and progesterone decline our gates become rickety and they start to fall off the hinge.
We can blame our hormones for the anxiety and the depression and the mood swings Obvious. But we also have to recognize that it's the microbes that are calling the shot or lack of. We need to diversify those microbes first. This isn't about going on a hardcore restrictive diet. We just need to heal and nourish the gut microbiome and then of course what happens? Anxiety dissipates just a little bit. The moods aren't going from zero to a hundred.
