It Might Be What You’re Eating 🍽️🧠 | Dr. Uma Naidoo" featuring a conversation between Mona Sharma and Dr. Uma Naidoo discussing the hidden sugars in foods and their impact on health, recorded on October 13, 2025.
When I flip over the package to the important ingredient label side of things. Let's start off with the sugars first. So glucose and fructose and high fructose corn syrup.
So sugar is hidden in most of our foods, even our savory foods like ketchup and pasta sauces and salad dressings. I educate people that 4 grams of sugar is 1 teaspoon because it turns out that our food labels are in grams. But we measure and cook and bake, and recipes in the US Are pounds and ounces, so. So honestly, if you don't understand what the grams mean, it's because you don't practice that way. Such a good point, right?
Yeah.
So 4 grams is 1 teaspoon. So I have them learn that when they're shopping the ultra processed foods. Brown rice syrup is my favorite to quote, because most people think, oh, brown rice must be healthier, but brown rice syrup is just sugar. I think understanding that and no one is saying, don't eat sugar, I don't want to mislead people. Having a fruit, having some berries, sugar in vegetables, whatever it is, it doesn't have to be that you exclude it entirely, just where you obtain it from think that is significant because sugar does drive inflammation, so be careful about where you get it from.
