This is a YouTube video titled "The Hidden Nerve Controlling Your Stress, Sleep & Digestion 😳" created on May 1, 2025, featuring a discussion led by Mona Sharma about the vagus nerve, its functions, and its role in mental health, sleep, and digestion.
Let's talk about what the vagus nerve is and its function.
There's a couple of very specific physical connections that the vagus nerve has. The pharyngeal muscles maintain a good strong open patent airway. In order to keep an open patent airway, we need these muscles to stay nice and toned. When we lack that, the tonicity of the pharyngeal muscles decreases and that leads to things like snoring or sleep apnea. Non invasive vagus nerve stimulation has come into play and this is a really interesting, wonderful tool, particularly for people that are suffering from mental health struggles, suffering from difficulty sleeping, suffering from gut dysfunction. Vagus nerve activation is a tool to facilitate a shift from sympathetic fight or flight into a state where we can heal if.
Their bodies are becoming accustomed to living in a sympathetic state outside of sitting to do breath work, which for some people when you're in pain, sitting to breathe and meditate feels impossible. So this is something else to really cultivate.
