Day 22: Settings and World: Place

Monica Leonelle and a co-host walk through how to build place into your story. They ask: what does your setting look like, how do characters move through it, what's each location's personality, and how do characters feel there. Use what fits your project.
Hey there, Igniter! Monica Leonelle from theworldneedsyourbook.com. Today is day 22 of the challenge, and today we are talking about setting and world building, specifically place.
We're on day 22 of the challenge, settings and world, and specifically we're going to talk about place. So for the next couple days, I think it's days 22, 23, and 24, we'll be doing some settings and world building stuff, um, you know, as far as that goes, not every story needs a ton of world building, and some stories need, you know, crazy amounts of world building. And so we're gonna find a happy medium here because this— these days really aren't going to be relevant to every single novel. So check out the questions. If it doesn't apply to you, then feel free to skip it. It's totally fine. And if you don't feel that you need to do settings or world building, then definitely feel free to go back to other days or just take a break, whatever suits you for this challenge. So, um, basically there are a number of different questions. So one, if your world is set in the modern day, what's that like? If it's a fantasy world, if it's in the past or future, what is it like. Very straightforward. Different sets in your story. This is— I, I've found this very important. So even if you're writing like a romance, it would be helpful to have like a diner or a bakery or just, um, just a place that, uh, you can kind of describe in detail and make, you know, give, give the book and give the setting a little bit of personality. Where are your characters traveling to and how do they get between places? So this is going to be important. Are they taking taxis everywhere? Do they drive? Are there boats? Those, you know, that type of thing that can really create colorfulness in your setting. What's the personality of each place? How do the places contrast each other? How do they compare to each other as well? Uh, and then this is specific to the characters. So how— whatever your settings are, you know, let's say you have a diner. Is that a place that your characters— and you could just do this for your main characters— but is that a place where they feel comfortable? Um, or does their personality, you know, clash against that place? So you can do some, you know, you could have like, um, a dive bar, for example, and you have a woman from New York City with her high heels and her, I don't know, really expensive jacket, who's dressed to the nines walk into a dive bar. Well, that's gonna create a lot of clash and it's gonna be, you know, it's gonna just make the setting a little bit more memorable. So think about those types of things, like where can you put your character that's going to make them uncomfortable? Where can you put them that will make them comfortable? And think through that a bit.
